The Game of Life movie, in the works...

Post by Hierophant » March 31st, 2012, 11:43 pm

Movie ideas have been getting more and more ridiculous lately, even going so far as board games. Recently I received a leak from a script Paramount is working on for Conway's Game of Life. Of course, they fugged up the technical aspects, and the fans are gonna be mad, but isn't that always how it goes?

***

EXT SPACE - HS FLAMMENKAMP

We pan as the HS (Heavyweight Spaceship) Flammenkamp glides along in empty space at a leisurely c/12.

INT FLAMMENKAMP BRIDGE

Only Captain John Conway, Dean Hickerson (navigator) and Bill Gosper (sensors) are on the Bridge, in a general state of boredom. Hickerson SIGHS.

HICKERSON
This area of space is totally empty. I'm not even detecting any still lives anywhere within a radius of 500 cells. Unbelievable!

CONWAY
Doesn't that strike you as slightly suspicious?

HICKERSON
I don't see why. This area has always been uninhabited. Of course there's always been reports of various short-period oscillators, but maybe there's been a recent edge-repair sweep by our fleet, or another fleet, that we were not adv...

GOSPER
GAH!

CONWAY
Bill?

GOSPER
Something's coming up on sensors! It's coming towards us at half c! It's enormous!

HICKERSON
Holy shit, I see it too!

CONWAY
Well, what is it?

GOSPER
It's... it's a grayship! A halfmax! All life in this sector is in danger!

CONWAY
We're in danger, first. Time to collision?

GOSPER
The agar will hit us in less than two hundred gens!

CONWAY
Line up with the grayship closest to us.
(walks to his command chair and turns on his communications console)
Attention all hands. We are under attack. All hands to battle stations. We are under attack. All hands to battle stations. Guy, I need the glider cannons operational now.

GUY'S VOICE
Aye aye sir! We're ready to shoot over here, whenever you're ready!

HICKERSON
We are in position.

GOSPER
Grayship is only a hundred gens ahead of us!

CONWAY
Fire! Fire! Fire!

EXT SPACE - HS FLAMMENKAMP - GRAYSHIP

The two cannons of the Flammenkamp shoot five gliders each in rapid succession. They hit the center of the grayship, which is perturbed for a few generations, but then continues more or less intact.

INT FLAMMENKAMP BRIDGE

GOSPER
It seems to be impervious to gliders!

CONWAY
Full reverse, half c. Prepare to deploy barriers.

EXT SPACE - HS FLAMMENKAMP - GRAYSHIP

The Flammenkamp reverses course and accelerates to c/2. Successive wide layers of beehives and honeycombs are deployed and remain behind as the Flammenkamp continues its escape. The greyship hits each layer and is progressively more perturbed, until it is completely decomposed into still lives. The agar trailing behind the greyship begins to consume itself.

INT FLAMMENKAMP BRIDGE

GOSPER
Complete success! The agar is disintegrating!

HICKERSON
Resume course, Captain?

CONWAY
Resume course at maximum speed.

GOSPER
Captain?

CONWAY
We have won this battle, and others will take care of the remaining, now powerless grayships, but... we must investigate the source.

HICKERSON
(turns around to look at Conway)
Could be dangerous. Shouldn't we try to get reinforcements first? There are two weekenders from our fleet at Station 26...

CONWAY
Weekenders can only go up to two-sevenths of c. Too slow. We need to act swiftly. What just happened was a close call. Next time we might not be this lucky. Lives depend on it... full speed!
(sits down, pondering)
But how did it not show up on sensors until we were almost on top of it... ?

EXT SPACE

CONWAY (voice over)
Little did we know that exploring this bizarrely empty, unknown region of space would expose us to incredible danger. But I surmised that its source would surprise us even more. I just hoped I was wrong...

We cut to the Flammenkamp coming to a stop in front of a large, chaotic expanse of space. Still lives and oscillators wink in and out of existence, as if they were generated randomly.

INT FLAMMENKAMP BRIDGE

In the meantime, engineer Paul Schick has arrived on the Bridge to assess the situation for himself. In the middle of a conversation with Conway, the chaotic expanse comes on screen.

CONWAY
What in the name of B12345678 is this?

Gosper and Hickerson are too awed by this bizarre sight to complain about their Captain's swearing.

SCHICK
I kinnae believe it...

CONWAY
What...?

SCHICK
(approaching the screen)
I thought it would never be deescovered.

CONWAY
What is it? What is this madness?

SCHICK
(in awed, hushed tones)
It's a Golly Soup! But it only exists in legends. Aye, 'tis said that there used to be areas of space that were not... quite stabilized. That there reigned chaos, that they could generate... anything. In pure defiance of the cellular laws as we know them! Indeed, 'tis said that we all come from a primordial soup which once covered the entire universe... and that Golly Soups are the remnants of this original state.

CONWAY
That's too incredible to believe! A place where the cellular laws do not apply? That's religious nonsense!

SCHICK
And yet here it lies before thine very eyes...

All are transfixed by this apparition.

CONWAY
Our universe is unraveling!

GOSPER
Could... could the grayships have been made here? From this... chaos? But how can anything be created from pure chaos?

CONWAY
We are not equipped to deal with this. Set a course for Station 26, full speed! I have a feeling there's something happening here that will require our best scientific minds to comprehend.

SCHICK
Professor Corderman...

CONWAY
(after some thinking)
You mean Charles Corderman, the inventor of the corderships? What does he have to do with it?

SCHICK
Last time I talked to him, my good friend Corderman, he was working on something... of interest. Perhaps we will require his assistance before this is through...

EXT SPACE - GOLLY SOUP

The patterns keep shifting endlessly, generation after generation. Objects blink in and out of existence. Suddenly, for a single generation, something that looks like a menacing face forms, then dissipates. More and more complex objects form, contributing to the air of menace...

***

Yea, what a real crock of shit, huh? How could a heavyweight spaceship travel at any other speed but c/2? Hard to believe they'd mess with GoL this bad... but then again they will make up any shit for a good story. That's Hollywood for you...

ROFL! This is awesome. Greg Egan eat your heart out.

(Maybe the crew of the Flammenkamp are exploring nearby rule spaces, where ships can move at different speeds?)

Where have you found this script?
First question ever. Often referred to as The Question. When this question is asked in right place in right time, no one can lie. No one can abstain. But when The Question is asked, silence will fall. Silence must fall. The Question is: Doctor Who?

I got it by email. From an inside source I can't reveal.

It's totally real, though.

Just kidding, I made it up. You knew that, right?

Seems legit.

I can't believe I didn't see this until today. This is definitely the most entertaining thing I've seen in a while!

Much better than 2001. That ship in 2001 was going at what, c/120? Pathetic. The Flammenkamp would just shoot gliders at it until it exploded. HAL won't be so clever when he's exploded in a bunch of cells!

A trailer has been released! It seems to have changed hands from Paramount to Sony. Unfortunately, they changed it so much that it's barely recognizable now.

LIFE 11: The Partial Empire

//Just came back to make an outline
With the help of a series of search programmes including knightt, gfind, wls and zfind, life enthusiasts gradually realised that a empire on the plain of life was getting stronger and stronger. The empire was full of spaceship partials as well as several other types of uncompleted patterns. When one of them was finished,it would move out the empire.
Now there is a serious situation. Many partials are invading. They conquer our search programmes and take up the most of our RAM.They are hypnotizing us so that we have to complete them. What can we do to this?Increasing width ?
