You use 16 gliders to convert a carrier into a teardrop in 5 steps. This can be done with 4 gliders in 1 step, saving 12 gliders:

The above optimization should reduce this to 183. However, by my count, it's 184. Either one of us miscounted by one, or my instantiations of one of the missing steps is slightly sub-optimal. Here is my fully-instantiated synthesis:

There is one other one also costing 195, and this one is no longer that expensive. Here are the still-lifes in my lists costing more than 100 gliders (195, 187, 184, 160, 110, 108, 105, 102):

There are also a few non-still-lifes: Hustler II (155), Nicolay Beluchenko's 204-bit P47 hassler (146), 44-bit P12 #1 (whose stator resembles an encapsulated box) (142), Pressure Cooker (120), 65-bit P13 w/two true Eater-2s (113), LW Emulator (111), 16-bit dual griddle w/two tubs with griddles facing in opposite directions (103).
dvgrn wrote:What, no room left in the thread for congratulations? I'm going to put some in anyway.
I'll definitely second that. I've contributed a bit to this, but some of Martin's syntheses have been no less than amazing (most recently, #297 that spontaneously pops out of primordial chaos, like Venus on the half-shell)
dvgrn wrote:Congratulations to all involved! This thread has been a wonderful education in glider-construction techniques -- and I should have studied harder, obviously, since I didn't do very well in the finals.
The fact that your main expertise obviously lies elsewhere (e.g. self-moving spaceships whose timings are so complex that even attempting to think about them makes my brain melt), yet you were still able to make some significant contributions mean that you did quite well indeed!
dvgrn wrote:Now, please try not to ask Mark about unsolved 18-bit still lifes, at least until he has time to get his latest-and-greatest Web pages all sorted out and online again. I got a sneak preview several months ago, and it looks like it will be a wonderful resource for obsessive high-energy glider physicists
As I had mentioned in a recent point, the very thought of attempting the 18-bit still-lifes fills me with dread. I'm sure the talent pool we have here would be quite equal to the task. Unfortunately, there are more than twice as many objects to do as with the 17s, and given how long those took (around 5 months), I can't imagine anyone would want to spend a year of their life on this task anytime soon. I know I don't! As it is now, with all the discoveries in this thread alone that have been coming up, and with me working a full-time job, merely collecting, converting, and cataloguing it all takes about half my free time!
I did post a very small subset of 11 18-bit still-lifes that it would be nice to find syntheses for (and this is not a high priority thing) - primarly to finish off the list of 23-bit jams - but those are there for a purpose, rather than just the Pokemon Imperative - "gotta synthesize them all".
The main thing I still need to do for my web pages is to un-break the search page. It used to work fine, but then I made several changes, and now some of the key functions no longer work (javascript errors, incorrect behavior for some things, incorrect results for others, etc.) - definitely not acceptable. I really want it to be in a state when I can publish it and get it out of my hair (and, also very importantly, to be able to use it as a functional tool for my own use!)
