The original synthesis was the 8-glider one devised by David Buckingham (who did most of the work on synthesizing small objects). I think most of the small object syntheses on this wiki came from my web site (currently down), which in turn came from his synthesis library. The last time I updated that was in 1998, and there have been many small improvements since that time. Dean Hickerson found a 5-glider synthesis, and more recently. B. Shemyakin found the 4-glider one.

That is totally new. Your "sneaking suspicion" may derive from the fact that the hook-with-tail/snake stabilisation is a rock, just like this well-known hat cap:

Is this methuselah known? I found it in a 10-cell form, but the following generation is only 9 cells, and it's hard to believe anything with a single-digit number of cells isn't known by now. It's definitely not an acorn derivative (found a couple of those earlier) and its lifespan isn't in the "longest-lived methuselahs" section of the wiki.

All still-lifes up to 24 bits have been counted, but there has not, as yet, been any attempt to systematically list or count larger ones. Still, since there are over 4 million 24-bit ones, and each bit added increases the number by approximately 2.45, there should be around 6 trillion 40-bit ones and 11 quintillion 56-bit ones, so you can understand why nobofy takes great note of them unless they have some particularly notable features (such as occurring spontaneously from soups, or being useful as eaters, etc.). The 40-bit one with the four large loaves looks like it should be fairly easy to synthesize (there are a few other large ones with similar structures). I'm not sure abot the 56-bit one with the 8 bookends - I'll have to look into it when I have some time.

Back in the '80s (I think), Thompson ran all objects up to 10 bits, so he must have come across this at some point. Still, I don't recall ever seeing it, so it should probably get added to the wiki. I'll add it to my own lists once I figure out how to synthesize it from gliders (which looks like it shouldn't be too difficult).
