This methuselah has a MWSS in its final census.

If there's a convenient way of putting the R-pentomino there with other technology, this might be something. As it stands, it's a curiosity.

The original source is hard to track down, but this was investigated over a decade ago. Here's a gun by David Eppstein from 2003, using a previously-known p5 Herschel splitter:

When Bellman came out, I looked at this again to see if it might be possible to invent a custom still life to take the place of the spark. It seems vaguely theoretically possible, but it would have to take a very long time to recover completely, since it has to interact again around T=60 to suppress an R-pentomino -- I didn't see how to run any kind of reasonable search. Was I maybe being too pessimistic?

While messing around with my R + Pond -> MWSS + Loaf + HF reaction, I found a way to whack a developing honey farm so that a pentadecathlon forms. Here it is in glider synthesis form.

If you alter the casing slightly so there are two inducting Es/bi-tables (giving this fourfold symmetry), this looks like it could even be fairly easily glider-constructible.

So I was messing about with smoke recently when I found this reaction, which when supplied with the sparks shown will reappear after 11 generations flipped over. Anyone know of a p11/p22 diagonal sparker?

The pattern:
x = 11, y = 9, rule = B3/S23

A reaction between a loaf and a TL may lead to a p20 oscillator:

Code: Select all

x = 27, y = 14, rule = LifeHistory
9.D15.A$8.3D13.3A$9.D15.A$.D$3D3.C15.A$.D3.CDCD12.A.A$5.C2DCD11.A2.A$
4.2D2CD13.2A$5.4D3.D$7.D3.3D$12.D$4.D$3.3D$4.D!
To spin the loaf, place the cross it faces.
However, there's a drawback which will be likely to clot the oscillator period.
I name: the remaining blinkers.
I found no 1-glider reaction giving enough blunt to destroy everything. And no 1-WSS neither.

Therefore, we'll need a lot of generations to reboot a quarter: At least 20 to destroy the blinks, and 20 others to trigger the light.
All that, hoping that the restarters don't interact.
This is game of life, this is game of life!

I couldn't get it to work at period 20, but it does work at period 24:

There is still a possibility that it works at period 20 based on this reaction, but someone would need to find a less obtrusive p5 volcano:

Hmm... sure, I hadn't seen the problem this way, yet to tell the truth I wasn't even aware of the existence of such a pattern...

But I noticed a few things.
1. As the loaf is symmetrical, it can spin in both way, creating a... uh... loafhalflipflop?
2. furthermore, a combination between guns and volcanoes, as you call them, may lead to a pattern where the loaf goes to 180° or 270°, and then goes back to start without doing a full turn. However, this would be challenging, as we would need cornershooters and possibly need to sacrifice a volcano

2.5 EDIT: Hey no! Such a reaction actually pulls the loaf. :cry: However, it means that it could be used as the back of a 2c/x spaceship, working in a way not unlike the weekender, but backward.
... And the back of a spacship is always a challenge, right?
3. Hey, a new (?) rotor needs a new name. What about lightspin/lightflip/trafflip/loafspin?
