However, as far as I know, switch engines are pretty uncommon.
I apparently underestimated the likelihood of one showing up.
Code: Select all
x = 27, y = 31, rule = B3/S23

However, I don't think that the glider can be replaced by a stable catalyst (although I could be wrong), so the most likely solution is finding a dirty century-making conduit whose junk annihilates the region behind the switch engine.

Switch engines are fairly common, as any Catagolue census can tell you. But it's annoyingly rare for a really edgy one to show up, that can sneak into a swimmer lane without damaging anything. Both of the eater catalysts in your century-to-switch-engine conversion get in the way of swimmer-lane catalysts:
Code: Select all
x = 42, y = 53, rule = LifeHistory

Still, any result like this seems like good progress -- it's nice to know that simple conversions are out there, even if they currently need some sacrificial junk to work properly:

According to
this post, switch engines are about 0.13% as common as R-sequences. Are there other known dirty conduits that make them?

Heh, I didn't say they were
really common, just
fairly common... I don't remember seeing any elementary conduits that produce any kind of a switch engine, let alone a clean one. This conduit of yours is breaking new ground, or it would be if it didn't need that extra glider support.

It's possible that one of the catalysts could be changed in a manner that makes the glider unnecessary, but that seems unlikely.

Original partial by MathAndCode, almost completed by me. Can that glider be used to delete the beehive? And yes, there's a transparent block.

Reflecting it with a boojum or rectifier would turn the beehive into a honey farm. There might be some more complicated mechanism, but it would likely add a lot to the repeat time, so unless someone finds a new 180° reflector, our best chance is finding a different mechanism.
I am tentatively considering myself back.

Try poking it with a messy B or H-creating conduit? A pair of Snarks?

While trying to find a completion, I found this:
Code: Select all
x = 39, y = 28, rule = LifeHistory

It seems familiar for some reason, but I'm sure that I'm mistaken because I definitely haven't seen that transparent block reaction before today.
Edit: I'm pretty sure that I've seen that two-glider collision in a conduit partial like that before.
Code: Select all

Ah, yes. Thank you for reminding me. The R49 catalyst also does the same thing as the transparent block reaction in wwei23's partial, with the same leftover beehive.

I think that this W->G is new. The glider may look like the default glider output, but it's two lanes off.
Code: Select all
x = 13, y = 19, rule = LifeHistory
A$3A$3.A$2.2A11$11.A$10.A.A$.2C8.2A$.C.C$3.2C!
Edit: The lane of the only other W->G in the Elementary Conduits Collection doesn't match, so this must be new.
I am tentatively considering myself back.

Sure seems to be new. Might be hard to attach anything to it, though. (?) The QF*138W works fine, but then the usual thing is to start with a pi to get a Q, and those catalysts get in the way of the glider output.
I guess at least there's a new G1 output based on HF135Q. That's getting to be mighty slow to recover and not-small, though:

The QF*138W works fine.
I just realized that the final stage of that conduit is a climber-like mechanism.
Code: Select all
x = 8, y = 5, rule = B3/S23
2bo$b3o$o2bo$obo3b2o$bo4b2o!
[[ STOP 14 ]]
However, the block can't be inserted directly, and it doesn't output anything anyway, so it wouldn't be useful in a self-constructing spaceship. It's at least theoretically possible that the block could be replaced with some junk so that the sparks left behind settled into the same junk instead of dying, but technology isn't powerful enough yet for searching for asymmetric period-fourteen spaceships (or at least beyond an impractically narrow width). Of course, it might be possible to modify the conduit to suppress the block, which would result in a QF*124W conduit, but that would make the output clearance even worse.
I am tentatively considering myself back.

I have attached the latest version of my draft of the Elementary Conduits Collection. When are we going to get around to formally updating it?

Whenever someone feels motivated to update it, which is to say, never (until further notice).
TBH I'd see the point in having two copies of the ECC, the original and a more fully-developed version containing less fully-developed conduits (that phrase lol), because it's helpful to have a collection of conduits that are reasonably useful in circuitry separate from the rest.
Each day is a hidden opportunity, a frozen waterfall that's waiting to be realised, and one that I'll probably be ignoring
