250 is not a methuselah; it's about average for that size.
It makes me reconsider: maybe some of the objects (e.g. Herschel, Century, etc.) are better labeled as "active regions", rather than "methuselahs".

The post I was referring to had 29 cells in its initial state and a minimum of 25 in generation 1. The minimal predecessors of herschel and century have 6 cells.

Simpler LWSS releasing methuselah

Code: Select all

rle
This has fewer cells.

Code: Select all

rle
Edit: This post has two examples of eleven-cell LWSS-releasing methuselahs.
[...]
If you want an even smaller example, there's a well-known nonomino with an 8-cell parent:

Code: Select all

x = 5, y = 4, rule = B3/S23
bo$3o$o2b2o$2bo!
I don't know of any 7-cell ones but I also don't know of any claims that none exist...

Another result from running dr on a Herschel:

Code: Select all

x = 16, y = 12, rule = B3/S23
14b2o$11b2o2bo$10bo2b2o$10b2obo$b2o8bobo$bobo5bo2bo$3bo5b3o$ob2o$2o9b

The Herschel can't peek too far to the right because then dr thinks the perturbation is too large and backtracks, so I have to run multiple searches :(
EDIT: You seriously have to try this!

Code: Select all

x = 18, y = 46, rule = B3/S23

The second catalyst is already known (but your version has a larger stator). The catalysis that it performs is equivalent to a standard block catalysis, so that fact is typically useless (although it's used in RF28Bi where a block would work initially but then get hit by a spark a few generations later), but it can perform other catalyses. (The examples are modified versions of the relevant examples from Entity Valkyrie's fishhook replacement guide.)

Correct. It recovers a bit differently. Still, I think that more people should run dr on Herschels and other active regions.

The first one seems familiar for some reason. The second one is an unusual ship+eater variant.
