this should be in the Life/Miscellaneous folder:

Code: Select all

#N cordercolumn-extender.rle
...
It is my opinion that this should be called "conga-line.rle".

#N Conga Line
#O Luka Okanishi, 26 September 2020

#C In September 2020, Ian07 found that a single switch engine
#C could be stabilized by another switch engine following closely
#C behind it. Soon after, wwei23 used this reaction to construct a
#C factory that produces an extending "conga line" of switch engines.
#C The pattern shown here, constructed by Luka Okanishi, is a more
#C compact form of the factory.
#C Compare with Signal-Circuitry/traffic-lights-extruder.rle.

#C A sawtooth is a pattern with population that reaches new heights
#C infinitely often, but also infinitely often drops to some fixed
#C value. This sawtooth has the lowest known minimum repeating
#C population, 177, which occurs at generations 48 * (121^n - 1).
#C It is a slight refinement of a population-181 sawtooth constructed

sierpinski-like-2 is actually log_5(13).

I like most of this new batch just fine, but this "Margolus media" one I really want to put a big TEMPORARY NO stamp on. It needs more comments! "Margolus rule" and "Margolus media" need definitions at a minimum, or links to LifeWiki articles.

And then those sample oscillators are so small that they miss a huge opportunity to show how strange and wonderful they are.

I can even make the RLE shorter (not counting the comments) and end up with a pattern that seems significantly more interesting -- or at least, it's more obvious that something interesting is going on besides the bare fact of Margolus-rule emulation.

#C that allow all of the methods simultaneously are much rarer.

This is as far as I've gotten so far. It still needs some definitions or pointers about "Margolus rule" or "Margolus media", but now I really need to get back to checking in all of the others.

EDIT: Added a LifeWiki link to the comments (see above) and checked the five-margolus-media pattern in. If you have corrections to any of this, make them quick!

I also think that Non-Totalistic is getting big enough that some kind of re-organization might be a good idea, but we're also very much getting down to the wire for the release of Golly 4.1.
This last batch of contributions from GUYTU6J really pushed the population of the Non-Totalistic folder up to an unreasonable size, so I went ahead and made three subfolders: Guns, Replicators, and Spaceships. Rather than create an "Other" or "Miscellaneous" folder, I just left patterns that didn't belong in one of those three categories where they were, in the main Non-Totalistic folder. As more patterns get added in the future, maybe a few more subfolders will be spun off, say "RROs", "Puffers", "Signal-Circuitry", or whatever.

I also got rid of the old 2004-era "Just Friends" subfolder, removed one of the patterns, and renamed and distributed the others as appropriate -- the filenames now have the prefix "justfriends-". I left most of them in place, mostly for historical reasons: Just Friends was one of the very early isotropic non-totalistic rules that saw any significant amount of investigation. Before 2000, most Life simulation software supported Life-like outer totalistic rules, but not INT rules so much. The syntax for specifying INT rules wasn't even standardized until the current millennium.

I think pretty much everything mentioned above this point is checked in now. If someone wants to review the diff, here it is.

Surely the pattern collection looks better!

Regarding the Just Friends, there is a completion to the removed p8256c4dirtyrake.rle that may be included if space permits:

#C FWKnightship completed its cleanup system, giving a clean rake.

Meanwhile, the oscillator collection and spaceship collection have both been outdated. I'm not going to update them, and if nobody else does the job, we could point to the forum thread https://www.conwaylife.com/forums/viewt ... =11&t=2442 in the comments for newer patterns. In particular, Jeremy Tan's Skopje project for smallest oscillators worth mentioning.

On the other hand, spaghetti2-spaceship-collection.rle should have the following acknowledgement:

Code: Select all

#C The dynamics of Spaghetti2, most notably due to the lack of B3i,
#C allows for easy construction of greyships. Below the main list is
#C a series of these found by Goldtiger997, covering all the "perfect"
#C orthogonal speeds between c/2 and c/11. (#p60275)
I have no further suggestions here for OCA patterns, and for CGoL, I will wait for googleplex's knightwise technology collection and hotdogPi's oscillator collection (preferably with a date in the filename like the h-to-h-collection). ...
...Hang on, is it a good idea to add the long list of partial oscillators?

EDIT: And how about appending 52513M in the Methuselahs folder and replacing die658.rle in the Miscellaneous with either of the newer die hards?

I took care of the last two items, along with the suggested Just Friends comments updates. Time has now definitely run out for pattern-collection improvements for Golly 4.1, unless googleplex's (2,1)c/6 collection shows up -- the deadline is tomorrow. There's nothing wrong with starting on collecting for Golly 4.2, though!

-- All this cleanup and checkin work has meant that I've been successfully avoiding the fiddly annoying problem of patching up the LifeViewer labels on hotdogPi's collection. Will be trying to find some time for that today or tomorrow.

This might just be a reminder to myself, but does anyone have a good single-pattern stamp collection of Sir-Sprayer-based oblique puffer and rake technology -- the different known periods, reflection reactions, and so forth? And maybe something showing new connections between Sir Sprayer and Sir Robin and (2,1)c/6 waves (weren't there some of those?), and possibly an unlimited-novelty(?) pattern based on colliding oblique rakes?
Here's a start. Ideally we'll pair this with the cleanup mechanism you built:

Code: Select all

# A: Sir Robin (Adam P. Goucher, Tom Rokicki)
# B: Lightweight minstrel
# C: Errant minstrel
# D: Featherweight minstrel
# E: Knightwave (Josh Ball) supported at both ends (Matthias Merzenich)
# F: Wandering minstrel
# G: Connecting minstrel
# H: Fountain minstrel
# I: Sir Sprayer (Adam P. Goucher, Dylan Chen)
# J: Pi minstrel supported by the Sprayer's spark (iNoMed)
# K: Period-12 block-puffing Sprayer tagalong (Adam P. Goucher)
# L: Dirty reflection of a period-12 glider stream (AForAmpere)
# M: Heavyweight minstrel catalysing a period-12 glider rake (Adam P. Goucher)
# N: Sprayer supporting the left-hand-side of a knightwave (MathAndCode)
# O: Small object allowing another knightwave connection (May13)

Here's a start...
Looks good so far! We have a little time to work on this now, since it won't go in Golly's pre-packaged pattern collection, but it could easily be added to the Online Archives.

Speaking of which... a serious overhaul of the Online Archives is certainly a theoretical possibility, I'm just not likely to do all the work on my own any time soon.

There could be a much wider range of categories, such that it could be possible to find the latest Elementary Conduits Collection there, for example -- and various toolkits, search results, spaceship collections, and so forth and so on. Some links could just go directly to a conwaylife.com forum thread (or wherever) instead of being a Golly get: link.

I just haven't come up with a design for the Very Large Patterns landing page yet, that makes a more ambitious set of links work really well.

On the topic of patterns bundled with Golly: would it be possible to remove the bounded grids from the Generations and Larger than Life patterns since the algorithms have evolved to the point where they're no longer neccessary (and their presence ends up being disruptive)?

Sure! A collection of corrected patterns, posted here as a ZIP file, would probably get checked in relatively quickly (assuming no one else came up with any objections).

Well if I'm to do the fixing myself, then I'd have to make the most of said submission by also including new patterns of interest to add to the collection. Merely fixing existing patterns feels mundane to me.

So does anyone have any suggestions on that front? I certainly can't think of many on the Generations side of things - most of what I'd be able to contribute would already be covered in some way by existing patterns. The rulespace does have, for example, adjustable-speed spaceships whose speed can be modified by changing the amount of decay states in the rule, but I'm not sure if that would be interesting enough.

On the combined topic of adjustable-speed spaceships, Generations and Larger than Life, though, there's the following 498c spaceship:

EDIT 3, 498c, using the one under a prime method, luckily, 499 is prime:

Given that this is, as far as I'm aware, the fastest-known spaceship in any rule so far, not including this definitely seems like a lost opportunity. I'd definitely like a writeup on how it works, though, that can be handled in the pattern comments, for example why it only works with primes:

I found a 46C spaceship, but it can't be made into a a 50C spaceship because this design only works for speeds that are one less than primes.

HROT replicators (analogous to B1357/S1357 and co.) may also be interesting if we can get a few examples in there, since as far as I know Golly and LifeViewer were the first to actually allow most of these to be seen.

Side note that I had to retype because my supposedly recently fixed internet decided it would be hilarious to crash on me and delete my previously typed version of it from existence - would it be a wise idea to create a dedicated "Golly pattern suggestion" thread, and move all relevant posts to there, such that this thread only includes suggestions related to the functionality of the program itself?

EDIT2: Almost forgot about this LTL gem - to my knowledge I also currently hold the record for the slowest known spaceship, as far as cases in which the rule or pattern isn't explicitly constructed for it go:

Sure -- since you've already followed your own suggestion, let's give that a try.

Same policy applies on that thread on this one in the past:

postings will probably be cheerfully ignored if they vaguely suggest that some vaguely described version of some pattern ought to be added to Golly's collection,

but

specific posted patterns in the thread with comments that more or less match Golly's pattern collection standards will probably be quickly checked in to Golly's repository.

Feature request:
1)An option to pop out a random hint/tips/did-you-know window upon launching Golly. Default is on, but it can be closed in Preferences dialog. I have seen some other programs that do this, which facilitates the user to get familiar with the possible operations.
2)An option to open the Pattern comment automatically upon loading any pattern. Also, default is on but it can be closed in Preferences dialog.
— Or alternatively, a keyword that can be added to a pattern comment to enable the specific one to be shown automatically. This can be useful if the pattern itself does not look very clear about what to do.

This might be an interesting idea. It's certainly true that a lot of Golly's standard functionality is unknown to most users, especially keyboard shortcuts. Shift+S to move a selection, Shift+M to change paste mode, Shift+L to change paste location, Ctrl+Shift+O to load a rule or open a pattern in a new universe directly from the clipboard -- all of those have at some point been a surprise discovery for some Golly user with years of experience.

If I had to guess, I'd say that this is probably in the category of feature that would be accepted if someone wanted to do the coding to add it, but it's not a super high priority. At least, I personally have somewhat mixed feelings about on-by-default features that produce annoying popups that I have to turn off. Golly is in some ways more of a "developer tool" than the most user-friendly possible design; it has a lot of power and flexibility while keeping the code relatively simple, but somewhat at the cost of a steeper learning curve.

A good starting point would be to make a list of the "tips and tricks" that would be served up by such a system. At the very least, that could be added to Golly documentation in some prominent location, even if the opt-out feature never materialized.

There's an existing way to set that kind of thing up for specific patterns, currently in use only for Signal-Circuitry/h-to-h-collection-26Aug2017.zip. It uses a Lua script (in a ZIP file along with the RLE) to generate and open a simple HTML file with links -- which is a step or two up from the old standard text-only comments system, anyway!

The only downside is that this trick doesn't work on mobile Golly. Not sure how big of an issue that is... Popping out comments automatically might be extra important, say, because the pattern doesn't make sense unless you run the showinviewer script to activate LifeViewer commands. But on mobile Golly you can't run scripts anyway.

So it might make sense to be able to flag a subset of patterns as appropriate/not appropriate for inclusion with the mobile version -- I don't remember offhand to what extent that's done already -- or to maintain different versions of those patterns for mobile and desktop. That's a separate issue, though. I kind of suspect that unless someone does all the coding work and contributes it, it's likely to be preferable to avoid adding any new complexity to the comments-processing system, and just use the functionality that's there already.

1) A command to complete the following idea:
GUYTU6J wrote:

How do I run pattern one step back/reverse a pattern to previous step with a script, provided it exists and without restarting from generation 0? In other words, how to complete the following model python script?

Code: Select all

# Easy pattern forwarding and backwarding
import golly as g

g.autoupdate(True)

def control():
    key = g.getevent()
if key == "key w none": g.step() # Forwarding is equivalent to Tab
if key == "key s none":
# Backwarding is equivalent to ctrl+z undoing last g.step().

while(1):
    control()
Generation count should be increased or decreased accordingly.
2) An option and related command to set opacity for each individual layers in the Stack Layers mode.

Not sure whether on-topic or not, but resurrecting an old unanswered question elsewhere: is the Molly site (http://lazyslug.no-ip.biz/lifeview/molly/molly.php) down? How is it different from online Golly (http://golly.sourceforge.net/webapp/golly.html)? This kind of comparison was made before for different LifeViewer websites:

What's the difference between https://lazyslug.com/lifeview/ and https://lazyslug.com/lifeviewer/? Can the former be updated?
The first link is the original project I did many years ago to learn Javascript. I announced it on the forums and met dvgrn who suggested it could evolve into a plugin that could be used on the forum which you see now. I haven't touched it for many years and it won't be udpated.

The second link is a full-size version of the plugin, also available at https://lazyslug.com/.
Also, why isn't there any updates to the pattern collection for the latter website?

No it got deleted. Molly was an experiement I helped Andrew with a few years ago. It was hosted for a while on my website. Note http://lazyslug.no-ip.biz is now https://lazyslug.com.

Not entirely sure you'd need to ask Andrew. Looks like the Golly Web App is not up to date. It reports itself as build 3.4b1 which is nearly two years old.

Golly installing rule files from zip archives: Cool lemme just copy that into the rules folder
Golly taking rule files from clipboard: Cool lemme just create a new file in the rules folder
Golly opening a rule file outside of the rules folder: no

Please make it so when you open a rule file outside of the rules folder, instead of complaining, it just copies it in.

If you advance a pattern by pressing enter, there doesn't seem to be a way to go back just a few frames, but if you hold space instead, it can take a lot of undo clicks to get back to before you started holding space. I think the undo button should undo repeated space presses in one go, and there should be a separate button to go back one frame - if you've been pressing space it just works like undo does now but if you used enter it treats every screen update from the enter press like a separate space press and goes back through those one at a time.

This request isn't clear to me at all. It sounds like you want Undo behavior for holding down the Space key to be just like current Undo behavior for hitting Enter -- and vice versa. Why not just leave things the way they are?

Full disclosure: if I'm understanding the feature request correctly, I'm very unlikely to want to see it implemented -- because when I hold down the Space key, it's because I want to be able to undo the steps one at a time with Undo. If I want to Undo back to my most recent starting point, I use the Enter key (maybe changing the speed before I start).

One suggestion I make to everyone who will listen is to change the default step size in File > Preferences > Control > Default base step to 2, for all algorithms except maybe QuickLife. And the "minimum delay" can go to 10 milliseconds or so. That way you get a lot better fine control over the speeds you can choose.

I want to be able to choose either way of undoing no matter which I use. So have undo always work as if for space, and have a separate button that works like undoing spaces whether you pressed space or enter. And the problem with just deciding to press space or enter based on which type of undo I want is that I don't know which type of undo I want until I've seen if the reaction does anything interesting.

Let's suppose I do not yet know anything about how the R-pentomino evolves in CGoL and decide to track its evolution using Golly. So I launch Golly, make sure the rule is set to B3/S23, set the speed to "Delay=0.25s" using the +/- keys, draw the R-pentomino, and press Enter. On first run, I might be able to see that there is an expansion to the left which separates and forms some interesting small object somewhere around generation 50; this object further evolves and emits a glider somewhere around generation 80; more gliders appear around generations 120-130. Around generation 150 I decide to stop and look again to see more closely what was that small object around generation 50; so I press Enter second time and Golly stops. Then I press Ctrl+Z once, which amounts to undoing back to generation 0 (the R-pentomino). Then I run again (Enter) at speed 4gen/second, but somewhere near gen 40 I press the "-" key twice so that the speed becomes 1gen/second. This time I might be able to see that a polyomino forms at generation 48 (plus-minus one; I might or might not be able to see that it's a heptomino). If I press Enter (or Space) immediately when I see that polyomino, it stops and this point is remembered in the undo history. Then I may press Enter again to continue evolution from that point, and then press Ctrl+Z once to undo back to generation 48, and then press Ctrl+Z second time to undo back to generation 0. This may be continued more or less in the same way, by changing speed and/or base step and pressing keys Enter (run), Space (one generation), Tab (one base step), Ctrl+Z (undo last operation whatever it was), Shift+Ctrl+Z (redo the last operation whatever it was) as appropriate.

Overall this seems a reasonably convenient approach, even though I have to use my eyes to look for interesting reactions, vary the speed and manually repeat the same parts of evolution several times as needed. Anyway, probably it is better to avoid changing the function of already established buttons and keyboard shortcuts, in order to avoid confusion. So I think Undo should always undo the last operation whatever it was, just as it currently does.

I'd be surprised if this hasn't been suggested so far, as it's exceedingly simple: having adjustable weights for each state when calculating population. Even a simple on/off checkbox for each state would be useful for many purposes! (This could probably be modeled after the Set Layer Colors dialog box, with similar behavior under rule changes.)

I don't think the Weighted Life rule has any options to adjust how population is counted. It just allows for weighting neighbors differently for the purpose of neighbor counting to determine the next state.

I don't remember having run into a request like Extrementhusiast's before, though it seems like a simple and obvious thing to ask for (if not to implement!) For example, with LifeHistory only the odd states count as ON cells, so if you could uncheck the hypothetical check boxes for even states, you'd get a population count that would match what you'd get if you hit Ctrl+J to switch to plain two-state Life.

In the absence of a lot of demand for a new feature along these lines, the most likely way to implement this would be a Lua script that could be run on demand to display the current "ExtrementhusiastPopulation" (which might default to "all odd states count as ON" but that could be configurable).
