I haven't gotten an answer on whether there's a mobile website for LifeWiki. When I try going to it, it shows in desktop mode.

Sadly now only 1255 members. I would like to see:
. how many of these contribute regularly by posting rules, patterns and software tools;
. how many simply organize and document known information;
. and how many have moved on to other things because they are no longer interested.

Re: Thread for your website-related questions
When I try to open the following link in Firefox, the browser quickly eats all available memory. I do not know if this is an issue with the linked thread, with my system or both, but I was able to reproduce this on another computer.
https://conwaylife.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=5286&p=115412#p115412
Edit (unrelated): given that the forum rule 5a recommends to use "code" tags instead of "viewer" tags in most cases, would it be a good idea to change the "Edit post" UI so that the recommended option (i.e. code tags) is more visible and the other option is less visible? (If this is technically implementable at all.) I think this change in the user interface could reduce clutter that occurs when people use the most visible feature (viewer tags for which currently there is a large button that says "viewer") and other people complain about that and tell to use code tags instead (for which currently there is a small button without caption).

But in most cases it's considered polite to let people make their own decisions about whether to invoke LifeViewer, by using predominantly "code" tags.

It seems that many pages in the LifeNews part of the website (URL prefix http://pentadecathlon.com/lifeNews/) are preserved in the Web Archive. However, some images and/or linked files may be missing. In some cases it may be necessary to choose a specific archived version to get images/files. I cannot say anything useful as to what extent any other parts of pentadecathlon.com are available in Web Archive.

Does Karel Suhajda's Hersrch merit a wiki article? If so, a few historical sentences would be helpful.

Re: Thread for your website-related questions
I'd say it deserves an article. It played a large role in the initial completion of Jason Summers' extension of Dieter Leithner's and Peter Rott's collection of glider guns, to cover all periods from 14 through 1000. That was Karel Suhajda's main purpose in writing it, I believe -- though he also added some more general search capabilities, as described in this ancient walkthrough. (That walkthrough was written so long ago that nobody had thought of putting tutorials on LifeWiki yet.)Book wrote: ↑July 14th, 2022, 6:33 pmDoes Karel Suhajda's Hersrch merit a wiki article? The most recent version from 4 December 2012 -- see this thread -- has the same search code, pretty much, if I recall, but quite a few more conduits added to its database, and an awkward option to search for Spartan-only conduits.

Re: Thread for your website-related questions
I think many "important at some point in the history" subjects deserve articles, even if today people are not using them as much - it would be fantastic to have such pages written by someone who knows enough about the subject (i.e. knows what it is all about).
(Also this is one reason why I think red links are useful. Sometimes it is better to have a red link to a currently non-existent page, rather than making an imprecise redirect or a very small stub just to make that red link blue at any cost as soon as possible. It is better to wait for someone who can do it well. A possible way to let them know that their help is needed is making a red link and waiting patiently.)

Re: Thread for your website-related questions
Good idea in theory. In practice, the historians in our community tend not to respond to red links. But they do at times read and enhance a stubby article, especially when some event or post gets them to look at one.confocaloid wrote: ↑July 14th, 2022, 11:32 pmI think many "important at some point in the history" subjects deserve articles, even if today people are not using them as much - it would be fantastic to have such pages written by someone who knows enough about the subject (i.e. knows what it is all about).

Re: Thread for your website-related questions
Heh. Case in point, I guess. I've added the key date, and another reference for it... though it's ultimately still just me saying "2003" in a post.
I can be more specific: here's the final pair of emails about finishing off the gun collection, in a very busy year: Hersrch first showed up in early 2003 -- first version in Pascal on April 26th, and a C++ port on May 1, first called "Hersrch" on May 15th. Several hundred new Herschel-loop guns were posted to the LifeCA mailing list between then and September 1, when the last missing period was finally filled in:

Congratulations are in order for finishing off the low-period gun collection (and for your own sake, I hope you have no immediate plans for p1000-9999!) I thought you were going to do these last ones with nice crazy Herschel pipeworks... but I admit that it seems unlikely that the bounding box can be improved that way. Really compact pipeworks seem to be surprisingly hard to come by.
That extra space at the lower right of that p53 was just too inviting, though. I saved a bit of space with an alternate p106 gun:
Didn't see anything else to improve -- this seems to have filled out the empty corner pretty well.Code: Select all

In other news -- I set up a batch-file writer to look for short asymmetrical loops using a single standard Herschel transceiver, for all the guns that are still above 16,000 cells. It was a pretty thorough search, I think (for simple single-Herschel loops, no intersections) but no luck so far. Results of any kind showed up for only four periods: p865 and p899 for Bx385, and p933 and p949 for B346.
But the game isn't over yet, of course. Keep the cheer,
Dave Greene

When attempting to put emoji in User Control Panel/Profile/Edit profile/Interests, the page crashes with the following ertor:
Is it because phpBB does not recognize unicode emojis?
Code: Select all

Re: Thread for your website-related questions
HotWheels9232 announced his 500th post, which is normal, but then he started announcing posts 501, 502, 503, 504, 506, 507 (piston instead of post), 508, and 509 (pot instead of post). He's at 509 now. This is getting really annoying and pointless.
I have the perfect remedy for this, but it would require an admin to do it. Since he's so obsessed about his post count, and given that it's at exactly 509 right now, we're in luck for my idea. Some of you can probably guess what my idea is, but I think he's too young to know (which is important, since I want it to be a surprise). As a hint, it's something that an admin will do when a certain condition is met, not immediately. [Edit: that condition has been met now.]
I PMed dvgrn on Discord detailing it, but as I said, some of you can probably figure it out yourself solely based on what I typed here. Don't spoil it!

Re: Thread for your website-related questions
Is it possible to make pull requests to Catagolue? It has a login window. Do I need to create an account, or can I use my Conwaylife login? I already found the tutorial, but it only mentions a Google account, which I don't want to create. No details about anonymous contributions (in my case that would be glider guns, my main interest). I pasted in some guns (capped), but they are identified as oscillators. No comment on smaller versions known.
While we're at it, is the bounding box still the going criterion for size (I'd approve if it wasn't, actually). It seems to be easy to find examples for some of the guns that are smaller by BB but larger by population (especially if you count the reaction envelope as population).

1. Sign up or sign in on GitLab
2. Fork the Catagolue repository (https://gitlab.com/apgoucher/catagolue)
3. Commit the changes to the forked repository
4. Make a pull request to the official Catagolue repository
