Howdy, I'm Nessie, and I just started playing with Golly the other day after looking up Mystic Smoke on wikipedia (where i learned that the term i was after was Magic Smoke) and falling into a rabbithole of software engineering that eventually landed me on the page for CGOL. I like to draw, and like games that involve science, apparently. Kerbal Space Program's another one I play with. I made a forum account after happening on a weird pattern after writing something in cursive using a drawing tablet and i didn't know how to search to see if it's a known phenomenon. The lexicon is extremely confusing, but considering that i play Dwarf Fortress, the learning curve for which has been described as a 'cliff' i'll probably get the hang of it eventually.

my one big question is if anyone's managed to run DOOM in CGOL yet.
my desire to be scientifically rigorous vs my short attention span: fight!

Hello, I stumbled up on this site after playing wordle awhile and my brain connecting the wordle score grid with something from CGoL. Such a cool community here that I see! It was so easy to do the thing I wanted to do, which was convert wordle scores to something runnable in Life.

I made this little web-app, as you can see in a different thread.

Doing this little project opened my eyes to all this crazy Conway stuff that is way more interesting than I had imagined. It's been a long time since I learned about it in school.

Anyway, I just wanted to say hi and say I did this (obviously very minor) thing, and leveraged cool resources here.

Welcome! That was a lot of viewer tags, so they got converted into code tags -- and introductions don't usually go in their own thread, or we'd have hundreds of people introducing themselves in their own lonely little threads, so your post got reported and then moved here.

Sorry about that. I discovered Conway's Game of Life sometime in 2021. (I usually forget dates; I typically remember years, if I remember anything, in that situation). I got "Simple Game of Life" by Dmitry Sinyov when I wasn't very far into it, but I got Golly later, and boy, it works well!
I've experimented quite a bit since I first heard about it, and I'm working on something really big. (Hint: I spent a day memorizing LV's commands, and I got frustrated with 2 hours of errors. [insert :diablo: from AoPS here])

Hi everyone... I'm new, but I'm not new. I just joined today, but I have been following these forums for several years now, since before Sir Robin existed, I think.

I'll mostly be hanging around the OCA forums because I like Wireworld and its variants the most. I'm less interested in Life and other two state cellular automata.

Hey I'm new, and I have about nothing to say except that I'm careless and one fifth of my posts turned out to be rediscoveries. Also, I love playing simple 2D games (and also love making them).

Hi, I'm new here but I have been a fan of cellular automata for a long time. I have studied many kinds of rules in a hexagonal grid using a self-written program. None of them were quite as interesting or versatile as the Game of Life but some came close. I might share some of the stuff I found at some point but this is probably the wrong place for that. In Life, I recently found an 8-cell diehard in 5x7 bounding box with a lifespan of 140. Probably not particularly significant but I have been unable to find almost any information about diehards with a small population and bounding box, other than the classic and well known 7-cell diehard with a lifespan of 130. Has anyone ever looked further, e.g. for a given n, what is the longest lasting n-cell diehard in an nxn bounding box? I would love to hear.

Hi! I am almost new here, I have been interested in CGoL and other ceular automata for 1 year. I'm 12, and I am Russian, so my English isn't good, but I often read English sites or forums, so I'm good at understanding english. I love programming and maths. I know Python, C++, HTMl, CSS, JS. I like doing syntheses of oscillators and like writing Golly scripts. Also, I have a few rules. Unfortunately, I have Windows, and I can't run apg search for them :cry: . My rules:

i've been checking the forums outside of this account a lot, but have never gotten a chance to meet all of you...
but here i am (finally)! i'm really interested in sparks (no, not sparkers, but just sparks). but, i also have a lot of other things i like, like conduitry (of course, everyone here loves conduitry)! the thing is, i have no idea how people can find conduits (and oscillators) this fast. if i knew how, i'd make around 2 conduits (and oscillators) every single day. anyways, that's all about me.

also, i exist.

EDIT: oh, my, goodness. i almost forgot about something super important. i'm INSANELY interested in seeds.

for example, here's the 12 cell "bi-pulsar" predecessor.

You need to use search programs to find oscillators and conduits. Here is one that finds oscillators and spaceships:
rlifesrc. There are much better search programs like JLS and WLS, but I think you'll need compiling.
