Small Spaceship Syntheses

Post by Extrementhusiast » January 2nd, 2015, 4:04 pm

I'm creating this thread to stop the abundance of threads each devoted to synthesizing one spaceship. (Those threads can stay there; I just don't want any more of them.)

Anyway, some spaceships that look like they might be relatively easily synthesizable:

Code: Select all

x = 352, y = 26, rule = B3/S23

Does x66's front sort of look like a tumbler to anyone else? Maybe that could be a useable base.

It's also possible to support half of an x66 on a HWSS; that looks quite amenable to synthesis.

In other news, an extremely messy synthesis of 25P3H1V0.2:

is thre some secret in finding the right still lifes to start with?

Ingenious!

What a progress!

Isn't that the famous space ship where David Buckingham suspected thre could be a way to synthesize it? So to speak the "Fermat's last spaceship synthesis"? Only the border of lifeline was too small to hold the synthesis ;-)

Keep stepping the pattern back until it looks like something constructable.

Awesome! Another one!

I'm infuriatingly close to reducing Pushalong 1 to a 25-cell still life, but I think the last step is impossible unless someone can rework my mess. To prevent wheel reinventing, here's what I have so far:

Code: Select all

x = 28, y = 25, rule = LifeHistory
.A$2.A5.5D$3A5.D3.D$11.D$11.D$10.D3.A.A$2.A7.D4.2A3.A$3.A6.D4.A2.2A$.

6.A4.2D6.A.A$5.3A$4.2ABA$4.3A$4.3A$5.2A!
EDIT: Right side didn't quite work. Zero-optimization fix.

EDIT 2: I made a mess.

Code: Select all

x = 29, y = 32, rule = B3/S23

Speaking seriously, can you formalize your insights, or is it just pure intuition, that you can't realize? I'm asking because that would be a perfect search program for glider syntheses!

To share my own experience, I'd wondered for some time, how I could write search scripts, while I knew so little about search graph algorithms and so on, but then I just said to myself, okay, I'm not going to do something smart, I'll just automatize the work I'd be doing in Golly to achieve that goal. And you know, that really paid off! Brute force algorithms but based on human behavior can do sometimes more than you'd expect.

My thought process went something like this:
  1. Could see portions of snake and clock in there, so tried those. Results too complex.
  2. Attempted alternate predecessor for right portion. Results too complex.
  3. Examined central portion more closely; found it was actually a pre-interchange.
  4. Checked to see if Niemiec's ZIP file contained that predecessor. It did, from a glider+HWSS.
  5. Altered central portion and right portion to make it a different predecessor of the next generation.
  6. Altered right portion of predecessor.
  7. Stepped back predecessor by one generation, and found that a P pentomino would work for the left side.
  8. Altered that predecessor.
  9. Stepped back predecessor by another generation; found that the right portion could possibly be made from a long integral with a bookend-to-bun component, and that the center could possibly be made from a southbound LWSS.
  10. Altered predecessor; found it could be made from a twelve-bit SL.
  11. Found fairly simple mechanism to transform left half of twelve-bit SL correctly, but was unsure of how to synthesize it.
  12. Realized that extending the SL southwest would provide a simpler activation mechanism (namely, a single bit).
  13. Tried using a block+preblock to get that spark, which didn't work; also realized that the southeast corner of the now 18-bit SL could be simplified.
  14. Tried using a boat to get that spark, which also didn't work.
  15. Looked at the central portion again, and found that a westbound LWSS colliding with a mutated southbound LWSS could get that domino spark there for that portion.
  16. Found that a domino from the southeast would work in the eastern part of the right section.
  17. Found that a glider+northbound LWSS would work for the southern part of that section.
  18. Assembled interim synthesis for right portion, using the block again.
  19. Looked back at central portion; found that a blinker+bit mutated the southbound LWSS correctly.
  20. Found two ways to place that blinker+bit against the southbound LWSS, but neither way allowed for the left section to be placed.
  21. Tried to use the 12-bit SL as a base again, which didn't work.
  22. Realized that a loaf+glider placed the spark for the 15-bit SL very cleanly.
  23. Assembled interim synthesis, but found that one glider was one generation too fast to place the westbound LWSS via block where I planned.
  24. Replaced problem glider with another westbound LWSS; found that garbage soon after wrecked the right section.
  25. Found glider using Seeds of Destruction that moved the garbage harmlessly away.
  26. Tried replacing the southbound LWSS with a three-glider collision that produced a beehive, which didn't work.
  27. Found a way to synthesize the mutation of the southbound LWSS.
  28. Assembled interim synthesis; found that extra cells in the southbound LWSS and the westbound LWSS interfered.
  29. Found that a southwestbound glider got rid of some of the problem cells, but not all of them.
  30. Found a second southbound LWSS using Seeds of Destruction that got rid of the rest of the problem cells, but left some garbage in the path.
  31. Found the right-hand southeastbound cleanup glider using Seeds of Destruction; left-hand such glider was placed on a known lane to get rid of the beehive.
  32. Realized that three-glider domino spark interfered with the upper westbound LWSS. Knew that it was the same as a pond+bit.
  33. Knew that a blinker+block produced a working spark, but that a subspark killed the reaction.
  34. Replaced blinker with glider+boat for convenience.
  35. Found a cleanup glider using Seeds of Destruction that moved the garbage harmlessly away; also found a second cleanup glider this way to get rid of that garbage.
  36. Assembled final synthesis.
EDIT: Another improvement to the pushalong synthesis:

Thank you for your thorough description! What I can conclude from it is that having large database of synthesisable things is quite important, but also is that the process you described might be quite challenging to formalise (as I expected, though). But maybe a tool like the Seeds of Destruction game, that would facilitate manual search (e. g. that can suggest predecessors or look up if something can be synthesised by colliding some certain objects), would be helpful.

The collision in question is on the LifeWiki under syntheses for the interchange.

Very close to x66--just missing a way to put those side bits on and clean up the upper left.

No, it's perfectly possible; it just takes 146 gliders:

Congrats again! I think this year would be a year for spaceship syntheses (and guns and maybe rakes)

EDIT: Ah, right! Happy Birthday to you!

I'm not sure how much of this is useful, but here's an incomplete predecessor of 46P4H1V0 (the c/4 orthogonal page needs to be updated to say that 37P4H1V0 is the smallest, still...) :

Code: Select all

x = 63, y = 17, rule = B3/S23

The right side is three generations in advance, showing that when the pre-TLs are added the spaceship works fine Adding them might not be easy though...

The weekender is, as expected, ridiculously difficult to synthesize, but I've made inroads.

Code: Select all

x = 36, y = 22, rule = B3/S23
12bo10bo$13bo8bo$o10b3o8b3o10bo$b2o30b2o$2o32b2o2$14b2o4b2o$14b2o4b2o

There looks like enough room for a clever domino sparker instead of the brute-force ones at the top, while still getting the pre-TLs into positions at the front. The gliders approaching from the sides seem to be flexible in a hit-and-miss way, so if those could be arranged to give enough room for a construction of the back, this might work.

Here's another approach I spent much longer on, and am not sure how to keep going forward with.

Another possible approach for the weekender. I haven't been able to fit parts together for a half-synthesis (still lifes to spaceship), though.
