A repeat time (EDIT: Whoops, no, I mean travel time) of 726: Good luck finding a use for the largest conduit to date, Dave!

I've built a sample gun using the Lx567. It's p769, slightly smaller than the current p769, and funky.

One of the eaters in the Pi->C converter can be replaced with a block, which reduces the bounding box slightly:

Nice find! Here again, I'm sure that G17 tandem glider will come in handy somehow -- though again it's just one cell too close together, so you can't reflect one of them with a single Snark to get a working Herschel receiver.

On the other hand, there are 90-degree gliders far enough apart that it's possible to fit a receiver in without any Snarks, making any number of possible H-to-2Hs -- the following three, plus the various replacements for boat+block+snake:

None of these circuits are very quick to recover, unfortunately, and there are a lot of ways to Snark-assist a Herschel receiver in about the same amount of space to get a Herschel splitter... so I guess it's not absolutely clear that I've found a use for the conduit yet.
Sokwe wrote:One of the eaters in the Pi->C converter can be replaced with a block, which reduces the bounding box slightly...
You didn't even mention the 7x9 eater replacement with the tub-with-tail. I was going to make all kinds of noise about that, because there was a block already in the right place that could be re-used -- that never happens in this business...!

(Well, hardly ever.)

Anyway, I think congratulations are definitely in order! The first two of those conduits are actually fairly compact for what they do -- lots of output gliders available with different time delays in a fairly small space. Just try getting a Herschel from that input to that output in that amount of time any other way, and you'll see what I mean... at least I hope you will; I haven't actually run Hersrch on that question yet.

While we're celebrating century-related goodness, here's another useless C-to-C. Cannot be made to do anything with the other useless C-to-C I found earlier, but hey, a few more in this class and we might be able to string something together.

Code: Select all

x = 20, y = 14, rule = B3/S23

Nice! It can be hard to tell what will be useful in the future with all of these new conduits being discovered.

I noticed from your earlier post that a snake can replace the eater in the new C->B converter:

Code: Select all

x = 31, y = 24, rule = LifeHistory
12.D$11.3D$10.D2.2D9$26.2A$26.A$28.A$27.2A$2A15.3C6.A$2A15.C.C7.4A$
17.C2.C9.A$19.2C4.3A$25.A2.A$5.2A20.2A$5.A$6.A$5.2A!
Naturally, I had to update the p769 gun with this "improvement":

Code: Select all

Someone around here should collect up all these "orphan' components so that, if we ever find something that fits one of them, we'll notice instead of only trying the known elementary conduits.

Here's the ones relating to centuries I know about. Left two by me, right two by A for Awesome (and I'm surprised nothing fits with the last one so far.)

I found this BG-to-2R:

Code: Select all

x = 15, y = 27, rule = LifeHistory
14.A$12.3A$2.2A7.A$3.A7.2A$2.A$2.2A7$.2D$2D$.D$5.3C$5.C2.C$6.C.C$7.C
2.2D$11.2D$11.D5$8.2A$8.2A!
The right R has nothing that can follow it yet, but the standard H-to-BG can precede this. The left R can be followed by a standard R-to-B, but the standard H-to-BG gets in the way, and it is highly unlikely that another way can be found to get that R out of there.

It is also fairly easy to remove the right-most R with an eater. This looks like it could have some potential for future use, but currently there isn't any known way to insert the BG from the right.

This might not lead to anything, but the main purpose of one of the eaters in the H->BG is to suppress a traffic light. It might be possible to get something by allowing the debris from the BG to interact with the traffic light:

I assume you meant to press the key directly to the left of H, right?

There just has to be a way to use this in a new H->X conduit:

Code: Select all

x = 18, y = 21, rule = LifeHistory
16.2C$16.2C15$11.3C$2.2C8.C$3.C6.3C$3C$C!
EDIT: Apparently there's at least one thing already known using this.

EDIT 2: Okay, here's something that might actually be new, an H->FNG where no still life extends past the FNG's glider lane (not exactly an edge shooter though):

Code: Select all

#C [[ LOOP 60 GPS 30 ZOOM 15 ]]
x = 22, y = 21, rule = LifeHistory
13.B$12.3B$10.5B$C7.7B$3C5.9B$3.C4.9B$2.2C4.9B$2.4B2.8B$4.15B$3.2C2B
2C11B$3.2CB.2C11B$4.B3.12B$11.5B3CB$12.5BC2B$13.2B3C2B$14.6B$14.7B$
16.B.4B$19.3B$20.2B$21.B!
The block on the right just barely maintains at least one live cell at all times, but every cell dies at least once during the reaction.

That sure doesn't look familiar to me. Nice find!

I'm trying to think if there's any known Herschel termination that's only two cells from being an edge shooter... the beehive is a transparent inserter but nowhere near an edge shooter, and even the old two-block Herschel stopper ( 5b2o$5b2o6$9b2o$9b2o2$o$obo$3o$2bo! ) is twelve cells away from an edge shooter.

In these decadant days, with Snarks and semi-Snarks to be had for the asking, I'm having a hard time proving that this will do much to improve the average Herschel conduit. There might be some interesting uses in self-constructing Spartan circuitry, but I'm drawing a blank at the moment. Here's a smallish adjustable-delay transceiver (not Spartan):

I suspect these double copies of things are going to get replaced almost universally by non-symmetrical loops, now that the G-to-H signal injector/syringe has appeared on the scene.

Very much at random, here's an asymmetrical smaller period 932 gun using this new... um... B614 conduit:

I sure do like the new high-speed viewer for this kind of thing -- and the "Show in Viewer" link! Has everyone tried it by now?

Seems like it makes sense to go back to [ code ] blocks again now for a lot of patterns, since an animation is still available with one click, with custom settings if the appropriate comments are there.

I would doubt the need for Herschel loops at all - as almost everything can be done with gliders now. Everything can be reduced to small amount of components attached to each other by glider input and output.

At least for the non-spartan applications I don't think we will need to use Hersrch again... I also think that now the main priority is at finding as many as possible H->G and H->2G and attach those to the syringe. Hopefully will have more edge shooters as well.

It is truly an amazing addition to this site. Not having to copy and paste to a separate application streamlines review and study, while associated commentary is still visible for guidance. Many thanks to all involved with this most welcome and functional improvement.

Another new conduit, Bx178:

Code: Select all

x = 32, y = 54, rule = LifeHistory
29.A$27.3A$26.A$26.2A4$2A$2A3$29.2A$29.2A5$10.3C$11.C8.D$11.3C4.3D$

19.3D!
It's definitely compatible with Bx125, but not much else.

Congrats! This one looks like something that should have been found years ago (only 3 spartan components).

Well, it's not really Spartan, though, because the Bx125 (containing an eater2) is the only known conduit that can precede it... pending review of recent discoveries that I haven't managed to memorize, anyway.

You can definitely get a signal out at the end using a dependent conduit like F166 or Lx200, but I'm not sure there's really any known way to get a signal in. The Bx178 puts a block in the way of almost all possible inputs to its own predecessor Bx125. Even another Bx125 won't fit:

Well, here's one other way to get in, and it's Spartan, to boot:

Code: Select all

x = 42, y = 62, rule = LifeHistory

Even if you use Bx125, you still can use an independent conduit, using some clever eater welding:

In other news, a different transparent block that I found:

Code: Select all
