I have been running my hacked version of ptbsearch on the beginnings of the Herschel evolution. Some interesting things have shown up; some to do with transparent catalysts and some not.

The H-to-boat is very impressive, since the boat is so far away from the rest of the conduit. Not quite sure what to use it for -- maybe a circuit that only reflects a glider if there has been a Herschel input, and otherwise absorbs it?

There are a lot of known ways to do that kind of thing, though. You could adapt H-to-G#21, for example. This one is pure Spartan, though -- doesn't need the tub-with-tail.

(But isn't there a circuit out there somewhere that can do a similar trick, and it's also a toggle switch? This one blows up if a second Herschel comes in before the boat gets used.)

The H-to-G6 is actually a very nice ambidextrous Spartan Herschel transmitter. The old dead-spark-coil one has a fixed chirality, because the gliders are too close together. If nobody finds a Spartan syringe for a while, this converter might actually still show up in self-constructing circuitry at some point. Though I suppose the compression rating isn't so hot (198 ticks)... Still, it sure beats a Silver reflector.

Still messing with CatForce and how to best use 3-catalyst runs, and sorting through the results. Is this known? It's a much neater R-to-B loaf than the other one I know about.

EDIT: I also did something dumb and added the pond to the catalyst list when checking out an R...but something did happen. This didn't make it through the filter at the end of the run, but here's a maybe-salvageable transparent pond!

That miraculous transparent loaf is known, but it's generally harder to place than boat+block+snake combination. Hmm, it says that Silver found it with gencols rather than ptbsearch. http://www.radicaleye.com/lifepage/patt ... srefl.html

Yup, that R->B is already known. It's the first R->B entry in my copy of one of the elementary conduits collections compiled before all these brand new conduits appeared.

I still find the eater2's behavior in that last one to be very unusual, completely unlike any other successful use of an eater2 that I've seen.

Now that we have syringe the family of fast stable reflectors is much larger than just the snark.

On the other hand snark and others are not spartan so the point of using ptbsearch is kinda lost.

Of the fixed guns I expected new tech to improve, p120 was not on the list. That's really cool. I had been making my improved TL extruder with p30n tech, mostly p120 and p240, and I will have a lot to update (After Friday once thesis is behind me, of course).

Edit: 23x33 gun (with only one output) beats 29x40. The naive cracks I took at improving p240 are no good though, 33x58 is worse than 25x55. But I'm sure a number of p120n guns could improve!

Hm... Why do you think it should be the standard form? It's not even p120, it's p240 because of the boat-bit. I'd say

Fun fact: I tried to use Gosper guns when making Sawtooth 213, but the streams are too dense to cross with a buckaroo. This gun does not have this problem.

I'm going to a doctor's appointment; I expect a sub-200 population sawtooth by the time I get back.

Since this p120 rivals even Gosper's historic gun I feel it needs a name. I'm going to call it the double diamond gun owing to the uncanny way its Herschel rotor moves (straight, oblique, turn 180°, repeat) and its two barrels.

EDIT One cool thing about this conduit is that you don't need the loaf to make it work. The loaf will reappear by itself on first use.

EDIT Freywa why do you think it's double diamond? I see only one "diamond" in the trace, and no diamond in the conduit. I would probably go with something like herschel ping pong, or simply ping-pong gun.

It doesn't look anything like ping-pong to me; the Herschel is not retracing its steps, only going around a one-way track. Anyway the diamond you mentioned in the trace is the latter half of "double diamond"; the former half comes from its double barrels as I mentioned earlier. Speaking of trying to beat this gun as the smallest possible, that would be next to impossible, hence a pun with alpine skiing run ratings (double diamond = hardest).

EDIT: Wait, there's a second diamond formed by the six blocks.
