The gliders from the Northwest are crashing into the newly-formed B29. When constructing a gun, you should start with a repeatable synthesis. As a starting point, use the following synthesis (this one only includes 6 "problem gliders"):

Code: Select all

x = 273, y = 29, rule = B3/S23

You can also try using glider guns of larger periods, allowing the newly-formed B29 to cleanly escape before the next volley forms in the NW.

Yup, it looks like one possible patch would be just to add one more period-doubling semi-Snark to each chain, and re-connect all those p46*30 = p1380 guns. You could build a few templates, and swap out each gun right after it produces its glider. Then you could just keep the same positioning for all those high-clearance Fx119 inserters.

But depending on how you put this pattern together, it might be easier to just rebuild it from the ground up. There's some kind of copy-and-paste bug at the top of the pattern that would have to be sorted out also. It's certainly possible to use Sokwe's kickback suggestion to build a B29 gun with a repeat time lower than 1380, let alone 2760 or 5520.

If you didn't mind a painfully larger pattern, you could leave off the p1380 guns altogether, and borrow the timing adjusters from the glider-to-weekender project instead. If you can get everything connected up, that will be the first new type of glider-to-spaceship converter for decades, except for Calcyman's glider-to-Cordership from 2009.

gmc_nxtman wrote:I think it is possible to assemble a 13-engine cordership synthesis; if one is made, I would enjoy collaborating with someone to make the gun. The synthesis should be trivial as it's from just switch engines and blocks, but I don't know if there would be proximity issues on synthesising the switch engines.
It's certainly possible, though ambitious. If you want to tackle the project, have a look at the two guns for larger Corderships that come with Golly: the six-engine Cordership and the seven-in-a-row Corderhip. Many of the tricks used there could be adapted for a 13-engine synthesis -- mainly the use of kickbacks to construct switch engines with gliders from only three sides, and also ways of using a few extra gliders to temporarily suppress extra junk from a switch engine until its neighbor can be constructed.

So obviously the first step is to come up with a working 13-engine glider synthesis. There probably aren't any good shortcuts -- you just have to try patching together a bunch of individual switch-engine recipes, see where the tight spots are, and look for ways to work around those problems, usually by delaying some of the switch-engine constructions by 48 or 96 ticks, and changing the construction location accordingly.

A very different approach that hasn't been tried much yet is the idea of building seeds for all 13 switch engines, along the lines of chris_c's three-glider seed for a three-engine Cordership. There might be just enough room to bounce 13 gliders into the construction zone to start up all 13 engines simultaneously... that would probably save a lot of kickback and suppression gliders, so it might even be worth it in terms of the total cost.

Now, the 13-engine Cordership was never a very tempting target for me. You can always build Corderships with more engines; the focus was always on figuring out how to build them with fewer engines. [Side note: wasn't there a rake made at some point, that constructed debris that burned at just the right speed to produce an ever-growing Cordership? Now I can't find the reference.]

Anyway, so I have a couple of suggestions for alternate Cordership gun projects.

One is that the 7-in-a-row V-gun turned out to be a lot bigger than it needed to be -- it turns out that there's a perfectly workable 6-in-a-row configuration.

Once the two-salvo 7-in-a-row recipe is adjusted to build a 6-in-a-row Cordership, it would be unusually easy to convert the resulting V-gun into a glider-to-Cordership converter. There are only two lines of guns to connect up with timing adjusters, and they're right next to each other, instead of the usual eight rows all over the map.

It looks just fine to me. In cases where you don't need the super-high clearance provided by the Fx119 component, you can get away with something a little smaller and more adjustable (add Snark reflectors to bend this around a corner or two as needed):

I haven't checked to see if there's a smaller p300 available somewhere, but this looks like about the right size.

Are there any kickbacks with gliders only coming from the SW and NE to produce a SE or NW glider? I didn't find any in the collection (besides the *WSS spaceship reactions)

Sure -- it just takes an extra glider. See for example the first two insertion reactions in chris_c's Borg salvo builder ("Resistance is futile. You will be duplicated.")

So is insertion better at the front of a salvo or the back of a salvo?
Are there any insertion reactions the insert at the back? Or is it harder or not possible?

Thanks,

I think it depends on both the salvo and the insertion method you use, especially the size of the spark it leaves behind and where the inserted glider ends up. Generally I like to start at the front and work my way backwards [there's no special reaction to do so, you just time it so that the inserted glider ends up behind the others] but either way works.

Extrementhusiast's clock-based inserter can drop new gliders very very close to the front of a salvo. Using Herschel circuitry, there's nothing comparable (just because nobody has built shotguns for the clock-to-glider insertion salvos yet -- it would be easy enough to do that, but very big and awkward.)

So if you're using Herschel circuitry, an Fx119 or H-to-G#2/SE7T14 inserter can place gliders much closer behind other gliders than in front of other gliders. We have quite a few other edge shooters and near edge shooters now, hidden in the H-to-G converter collection, including some that are better at in-front placements... but the Fx119 and SE7T14 are nice and compact, and have traditionally tended to get used the most often.

[The above is the link to the most recent H-to-G recognizer script. The actual H-to-G collection is in the first message at the top of the thread.]

That link doesn't make it obvious, but the Borg spaceship in the _First Contact_ movie and in various episodes is a huge cube that flies through the Universe at a quarter of the speed of light (well, maybe, sometimes.) That made my big test square of closely packed gliders look eerily familiar, somehow.

Sure. Just run chris_c's salvo builder on the salvo coming in from the northwest, and then delete that salvo and replace it with whatever the script comes up with.

It won't be optimal, because at least two of those gliders can actually be placed with simple two-glider kickbacks -- i.e., a glider coming from the southeast, hitting a glider from the southwest or northeast. And it won't be optimized, because it will be possible to move all of the script's output gliders so that they're closer to each other. You'll be able to figure out how to move or substitute gliders and recipes with a little practice:

Code: Select all

x = 142, y = 22, rule = LifeHistory
3A37.2A39.2A38.A$2.A38.2A37.A.A38.2A$.A38.A41.A37.A.A2$3.2A38.2A40.A$
2.2A39.A.A38.2A38.3A$4.A38.A40.A.A37.A$125.A11$140.D$19.D40.D38.D.D
39.D$20.2D36.D.D39.2D37.3D$19.2D38.2D39.D!
To replace a target glider with its equivalent kickback pair, first move the target glider by (+20,+20) -- 80 ticks -- using shift.py if you want to. Then copy and paste the red glider in on top of the target glider, and bring the two green gliders along for the ride.

It would be very nice to be able to select sets of gliders and drag them around the screen, and have Golly automatically adjust all the gliders so that they stay in the correct places relative to each other and you get the same target glider output. It's perfectly possible to write a Python script that does that... but I'm away on a trip for the next week, so I guess I'll leave that as an exercise for the reader.

I think this spaceship is a good target, but I don't know much about glider synthesis.

In my experience, the easier spaceship syntheses focus on a phase in which there are a lot of cells that either survive or die by overpopulation. That way, you can build the ship from a core of a still life or oscillator, which you then consult Catagolue and Martin Grant for. (I have no problems outsourcing the synthesis of my trademark large SL cores to our local glider guru.) Underpopulation cell death is acceptable on the outsides of the ship, but close to the center, it's a major monkey wrench. These are all rules of thumb, though--I distinctly recall struggling a lot with an "easy" part of the B29, until the ship of the ship-and-eater solution solved it all fairly easily.

So, my intuition is that generation 3 of that ship is the most tractible. Still not easy, but, then, the only easy ships are standard spaceships, derived-from-standard spaceships, and the loafer. I'll check it out once I'm back at Golly and have some time.

Generation 3 seems easiest, as the two halves are seperate, however synthesising them so close to each other might be hard. Perhaps we could start with loops, or 13-heads:

Code: Select all

x = 31, y = 21, rule = B3/S23

2bo$2obo13b2ob2o5bobo$3bo22b2ob2o$3b2o$21b2o$21b2o!
Could anyone give me some tips on synthesising spaceships like this? I know that there aren't "Top 10 ways to make synthesis a breeze" and it requires experience, but I think I'm very interested in it now.

Also, I built a gun for the "HWSS and MWSS pulling a block" spaceship. Implemented in p184, using "proper" p184 guns now. I'm sure it can be optimized.

Note: Other than the HWSS eater, have ponds been used very much in circuitry (stable or periodic)? The three most likely catalyses to me are transparent, or -> beehive -> pond. One could probably find some crazy receiver based on converting a ship to a pond, and using a second glider to reset it back- but that seems unlikely. There are also some common SL that are never in any stable circuits like barge, or long snake. There's probably some catalysis of a carrier involving the long side. Barge and long boat I mostly see as transparent, however barges can sometimes replace boats.

Python is largely the same as snake in terms of its catalysis abilities, however there is one exclusive catalyst:

The other still lifes are spartan and likely to be optimized away soon, so I'm omitting how to place those.

---

Any questions? I can give better tips if you ask specific questions about how I do a synthesis.

Ponds are rarely used in catalytic ways. There's the R-to-G that consists of a pond and and eater, and the honeybit, but otherwise, ponds are only used in places where spartan objects are handy, but don't need to survive--seeds of destruction and one-time-turners.

Other common SLs could be found as catalysts if added to a CatForce run, but I doubt that anything much would happen--even ponds are rare in CatForce results. Still, catalytic longboats and such haven't really been investigated. I do recall one Bellman result in which two cells of a barge/longboat were deleted to turn it into a tub/boat, and then replaced quite a bit later, so maybe you'd find something like that.

Good catch on the python--usually I use a long hook with tail for that particular catalysis, but a python is two cells smaller!

Wow... Kazyan style! It will be interesting to see how much that collection of bait still lifes can be reduced, but it's maybe more impressive the way it is.

It's probably way too early to worry about optimizing the cleanup, but for the current version it can be done easily with four gliders. For example --

Does anyone know a standard name for this period-4 c/2 30-cell double-B-heptomino spaceship? Pentadecathlon.com still seems to be down, or I'd look there --

A few weeks ago, I was trying to update my collection to use the "standard" names for all the larger spaceships, so I downloaded all of the spaceship collections up to 50 cells (and a few larger ones), which was apparently fortunate in retrospect. This one is called 30P4H2V0.4. This now also means that all known c/2 orthogonal spacehips up to 30 cells have syntheses.

Well, the first question is simply where do I start? Like looking at a spaceship, how do I find the starting point?

I want to find a synthesis for 37P4H1V0, but I simply don't know how to begin.

By the way, that spaceship can eat a glider:

Code: Select all

x = 20, y = 15, rule = B3/S23

Actually, the glider interacts and destroys the spaceship 1 gen earlier:

Here's how I start:
1. Look at the phases and see if there are resemblances to still lifes or oscillators. The closer to the center, the better.
2. Once you've settled on a phase with the most resemblances, tweak that phase so that it still evolves as the regular spaceship, but looks more constructible.

My start for the 30 cell spaceship looked rather like this, after I threw out a bunch of different approaches:

Code: Select all

x = 75, y = 14, rule = B3/S23
63bo$63bo6bo$62b3o5bo$2bo19bo19bobo17b3o4b3o$b3o7bo9b3o7bo10b2o5bobo
17b3o$2o2bo5b3o7b2o2bo5b3o8bo8b2o9bo$bob3o3bo2b2o7bob3o3bo2b2o5bob2ob
2o6bo6b3o2b2o6bo$2obobo2b3obo7b2obobo2b3obo8bobobo2b2ob2obo5bo2bobo2b
2o2b3o$3b3o2bobob2o9b3o2bobob2o10bo3bobobo6bo4bo3bobo2bo$3b2o3b3o12b2o
3b3o13bo4bo19bo4bo$5bo3b2o13bo4b2o12bo5bo12b3o$8bo20bo15bo4bo18b3o$48b
o15b2o$68b2o!
The back was the most tricky--I tried a lot of alternatives, but eventually went back to the original, after I determined that it might be possible to wedge something in between whatever reaction would form the back sparks--this would generate the inner cells of the bottom two dominoes.

Here's how I continue after starting a synthesis, loosely:
3. Determine how to reach the predecessor via applying junk/sparks to the known still lifes and oscillators. Don't worry about the junk seeming reasonable.
4. Figure out how to make the junk from more still lifes and oscillators and other, smaller bits of junk/sparks.
5. Repeat step 4 with each piece of junk until you can reduce everything to gliders, still lifes, oscillators, and sparks.
6. Reduce the sparks to the appropriate collisions.
7. Assemble the still lifes and oscillators via known syntheses and components.

They don't look completely impossible to me, though the difficulties of those spaceships would vary from "frustrating" to "preposterous".
