Eater for the Creeper composed of only still lifes. No need for that one period-4 oscillator.

Code: Select all

x = 9, y = 35, rule = B3/S13

I suspect that with the right induction coil for one of the blocks, you could safely turn the consumption into a signal.
Nice find! I've added it to LifeWiki. How did you find it? Manually?
Pretty much. I was indeed trying to create a still life-based Creeper eater, where my plan was to use two blocks close together along with a duo of a different still life above and further apart. It just so happened of those failed eaters evolved into an actual eater.
I could've chose a better username, but oh well.

I haven't seen a proper oscillator collection for this rule, so I went ahead and made one myself:

Cool! I wonder what makes odd-period oscillators so rare compared to their even counterparts. Maybe its connected to the lack of even-numbered survival conditions?

Out of all of these, my favorite oscillator is either this or the period 10.

Every oscillator in that collection with period 8 or greater, as well as the entire p6 section, is required to be even: all but two are flippers in some way, and the other two are a p12 that's a period-doubling reaction and a p20 that's LCM(4,10).

Some things before I go:

Here's a one-time Fighter-to-Creeper converter. I don't see how a small, reusable version could be made without having to create a Creeper from the ground up.

A collection of inductees I have recognized, and named, because why not? The larger still lifes you'll find in Catagolue are just inductee galore, so I think it's important to keep these in mind.

Using three of the p4 oscillators, I present to you a Fighter eater, from what I can tell the first to be made.

Code: Select all

x = 63, y = 11, rule = B3/S13
54b5o2$56bo$62bo$3o11b3o11b3o11b3o17bo$3b2ob2o9b2ob2o9b2ob2o9b2ob2o10b
obo$3o11b3o11b3o11b3o17bo$62bo$56bo2$54b5o!
I'll eventually try to find a stable one.

Also, I'll try to slow down with the posts on this topic since I'm by far the most active one on it. If I make any new discoveries or finds they'll probably come in batches every week or so.

In the meantime, I'm working on a user page that will get pretty detailed when it comes to this specific rule. It will also contain why I chose LowLife, goals I have for the rule, and potential ways to progress from here. User:TheWayOfTheCon/LowLife zone

The Creeper can turn into a fuse for this certain wick, and function as an eater for dominoes, where it transforms into a Fighter at the end (unless there's something to cleanly remove the last domino).

I think this is the first engineered pattern that produces a spaceship with a reaction.

Code: Select all

x = 26, y = 15, rule = B3/S13
7b2o$8bo$9bo$6b4o2$2o$25bo$3b2ob2ob2ob2ob2ob2ob2ob2o$o24bo$bo2$6b4o$9b
o$8bo$7b2o!
In the pattern, a fuse burns from one end and approaches two period-4 oscillators, disrupting their natural motion. A T-tetromino flips horizontally because of the chaos, and finds itself slip into a Creeper predecessor. Thus, a Creeper is made and begins to safely travel, albeit in the direction of the former pattern.

Its not super useful on its own, but I think its something of note because of just how rare spaceships are in this rule. What could be useful is if I could figure out how to get the Creeper facing the other direction.

EDIT: You can also use this reaction to make a Sidewinder, as it too has an isolated T-tetromino in one of its phases.

Code: Select all

x = 25, y = 15, rule = B3/S13

Honestly, I think the best chance for linear growth in this rule is to find a sparky oscillator or spaceship, then rub them together to make a gun or a puffer. A simple wickstretcher or puffer might turn up in a spaceship search though.

Honestly, I think the best chance for linear growth in this rule is to find a sparky oscillator or spaceship, then rub them together to make a gun or a puffer. A simple wickstretcher or puffer might turn up in a spaceship search though.
Considering all my experience with this rule, that wont come easy. Most oscillators don't produce sparks and are pretty fragile. The only exception would be that period-4 used in eaters, but if the dot sparks interfere with each other than usually the oscillator is destroyed. And yeah, there are many spaceships found from search engines, but most of them, once again, are fragile, at least at first glance. And they contain a lot of space dust.

I'm not suggesting that one couldn't make a linear growth pattern in LowLife, just that it will not come easy like in other rules, and we just don't have the tech. The natural puffer/wickstretcher idea sounds interesting, but it would probably take some nuanced searching, and I couldn't even figure out how to compile apgsearch. For now I'll just continue to document whatever might be interesting here and on a user page I have.

I do want to bring up that on Catagolue some searches into spaceship synthesis have been conducted by PK22, and some of them do end up creating an entirely different spaceship, like this 3-Sidewinder synthesis for a Creeper. And the opposite has been done, just with more Creepers. So for making a specific spaceship gun, that's something to be noted. But if we ever reach the point where a spaceship gun seems within reach, it should be for the Creeper due to its symmetry.
I could've chose a better username, but oh well.

Oh, by spaceship search I meant something like lifesrc, not a soup searcher like apgsearch. Occasionally, spaceship partials turn out to be a puffer or a wickstretcher. It isn't exactly common, though, so it certainly isn't the best way to find a linear growth pattern, but someone might stumble into one by accident.

If you want a build of apgsearch, tell me your OS and CPU and I can build it for you.
I was gonna download the precompiled 5.43 version for Windows and see if I can get that up and running. If not, I'll get a build from you. Thanks for the offer.

Neat. Looks like they share the same top. I might be wrong, but looking the frontend of the frontend, it seems like one big problem is a line of three at the bottom not being there in the next generation. Otherwise, the rest of the partial stays the same. If we were able to stabilize just that, we could end up with a small and symmetric c/3.

It doesn't really remake the spaceship, the Fighters just turn into Creepers. Really, the Fighter is just the Creeper with a domino in front.

Alright, I figured out how to compile apgsearch and did some standard hauls for C1 and D2+1.

Neat. I found that you can use this to eat blocks

or hassle two blocks simultaneously.

2o3b2o$2obo5bob2o$2b2o5b2o$bob2o3b2obo$3bo5bo$2bo7bo$3b7o!
You can also use these as eaters, but other than that I haven't found a good use for these. Still a good find.

I did some searching using ikpx2 and found a relatively small c/6.

Code: Select all

x = 13, y = 13, rule = B3/S13
6bo$6bo2$6bo$6bo$5bobo$5bobo$5bobo$5bobo$4b2ob2o$3ob2ob2ob3o$3o7b
3o$b2o7b2o!
I'll update this post if I find any more interesting ships.

EDIT: After 50,000 iterations, here's the last partial my c/6 search showed.

Code: Select all

x = 13, y = 35, rule = B3/S13
3bo5bo$3bo5bo2$3bo5bo$3bo5bo$2bobo3bobo$2bobo3bobo$2bobo3bobo3$obo
7bobo$ob2o5b2obo$3bobobobo$3b2o3b2o$2bobo3bobo$4bo3bo$bo9bo$b2o7b
2o$2bob2ob2obo$4b2ob2o$5bobo$3bobobobo$4bo3bo$2b4ob4o2$b2o7b2o$2b
2o5b2o2$2bo7bo$4b2ob2o$3ob2ob2ob3o2$bo2b2ob2o2bo$b3o5b3o$2o9b2o!
It seems to me that most of these c/6 partials depend on the Fighter as the front-end. Kinda lame. Moving on to speed c/8.

EDIT 2: No spaceships came out of my c/8 search. This is my first time using ikpx2, so maybe I shouldn't have expected to get one on the first search attempt.

EDIT 3: Found this small c/4. Doesn't have any interesting sparks, though.

Code: Select all

x = 14, y = 10, rule = B3/S13
6b2o$2bob2o2b2obo$2b2obo2bob2o$bo4b2o4bo2$o2bo6bo2bo$2b2o6b2o$o12b
o$3o8b3o$o12bo!
FINAL EDIT: Out on a whim, I decided to do some knightship searching. Here was the best partial.

Code: Select all

x = 16, y = 14, rule = B3/S13

This puffer was found after I searched extensions of a c/2 spaceship. Specifically, it puffs blocks, dominoes, and duoplets. This is likely the first linear growth ever documented for this rule. Swell. I still want to make a gun, though.

There will probably be a few more distinct puffers once the hauls have been commited to Catagolue. ikpx2 went blazing fast.

EDIT: New puffer, this one produces dominoes only.
