This is the smallest rule with an explosive domino:

Code: Select all

#C [[ THEME MONO ]]
x = 1, y = 2, rule = B2ack
o$o!
What do you mean by "smallest rule"?
They probably mean the rule with the lowest number of conditions.
I could've chose a better username, but oh well.

Still learning the ropes of cellular automata.

B1c/S0 has less transitions:

Code: Select all

x = 1, y = 2, rule = B1c/S0

Code: Select all

I have found a stable zebra-complementary rule with a (seminatural) c/12 spaceship (too bad it can't be natural because this rule is explosive on odd symmetry):

Code: Select all

For the past few days, I've been investigating and apgsearching a promising LTL rule which I've dubbed "Pottery".

Code: Select all

x = 64, y = 64, rule = R2,C2,S4,6-9,B7-9
!
#C [[ RANDOMIZE ]]
It's a range-2 rule with behavior that, on the surface, is not too far off from the Game of Life. Chaotic patterns and evolutionary sequences are long-lived and somewhat far-moving, although I admit for what it's worth the sequences do last a bit too long.

I've found several spaceships in this rule. There's the common c/3d and c/6o, assuming the speed of light is one cell per tick, which it isn't, but it's easier to understand alongside other spaceships that have popped up in Catagolue, like a c/2 and 6c/24.

Code: Select all

x = 58, y = 5, rule = R2,C2,S4,6-9,B7-9
2b2o5b3o16b3o8b2o5b2o7bo$b4o4b3o15b4o8b3o3b3o6b3o$2o2bo3bo3bo14bo3bo6b
4o3b4o5bob2o$2o2bo3bo3bo18bo6b3o5b3o4bo2b2o$b3o5b3o16b3o10bo3bo7b2obo
!

There are some interesting oscillators. There's a bouncy p34 and p50:

Code: Select all

x = 39, y = 13, rule = R2,C2,S4,6-9,B7-9
3b2o$2b4o30bo$b2ob2o30bobo$2o2bo31b2o$5o31b2o$4o$b2o28b4o$10b2o21b2o2b
o$3bo4b5o19bo$4bo2b2o2b2o$6b3ob2o$6b5o$7b3o!
And some lower-period but potentially useful oscillators:

Code: Select all

x = 56, y = 15, rule = R2,C2,S4,6-9,B7-9
15bo2bo$14bo4bo$13bo6bo9b2o15b3o$13b2o4b2o9b2o14bo3bo$14b2o2b2o9b3o15b
obo$6bo41bo$2bo2bobo22b2o$b7o23bo22bo$7o25bo20bobo$obo2bo27b2ob3o13bo
2bo$bo12b2o2b2o14bob3o14bobo$13b2o4b2o15bo17bo$13bo6bo$14bo4bo$15bo2b
o!
There's even an RRO.

Code: Select all

x = 6, y = 6, rule = R2,C2,S4,6-9,B7-9
b2obo$ob2o$bob3o$b4o$ob2obo$bo!

There are also a variety of still lifes, and here is where the rule's name comes in. You'll occasionally come across large, hollow still lifes that stem from small predecessors. They reminded me of pottery because they're geometric, diverse, and fragile. In retrospect, they look more like crystals to me, but that name would be a bit too basic.

Code: Select all

x = 36, y = 6, rule = R2,C2,S4,6-9,B7-9
b3o13b3o14bo$2ob2o11b2ob2o12b3o$o3bo11bo3bo12b3o$2ob2o11bo3bo12b3o$b3o
12b5o12b3o$17b3o!
While the existence of these makes the rule stand out, they seem useless unfortunately. But don't worry! There are tons of other, non-pottery still lifes, from the very fragmented, containing several islands, to literally just the phases of Life's glider.

I have found a few interesting reactions, mainly collisions and eating reactions.

Two-spaceship collisions resulting in the other spaceship being made.

Code: Select all

x = 51, y = 21, rule = R2,C2,S4,6-9,B7-9
47b3o$46bo3bo$46b2ob2o$47b3o5$20b3o$19b2o2bo$19bo3bo$19b2ob2o$b3o16b3o
$o2b2o$o2b2o$4o$b2o38b3o$41b3o$40bo3bo$40bo3bo$41b3o!
The 6c/24's sparky backend can get rid of the c/2.

Code: Select all

x = 11, y = 93, rule = R2,C2,S4,6-9,B7-9
b2o5b2o$b3o3b3o$4o3b4o$3o5b3o$3bo3bo12$b3o$4o$o3bo$4bo$b3o32$b3o$4o$o

Here's the ruletree if y'all want to apgsearch the rule. Name the .tree file "PotteryLTL" to make sure your hauls go to the right census.

Code: Select all

This rule has both bounded oscillators as well as spaceships and even a wickstretcher.

A rule i found has no ships but an adjustible oscillator family consisting of lines of length (n+1) where n is twice the length of the last osc

Code: Select all

The pattern immediately breaks on the next one, so this does not actually work:

Code: Select all

x = 63, y = 1, rule = B2-ac3ai4aei567/S04cqz5eik678
63o!
The torch of 5S has been passed on again, and is now managed by speedydelete. It can be found here. Also check out my program EPE, a tool for searching for patterns in various rulespaces.

I've been looking at B35e6n/S23:

Code: Select all

x = 127, y = 49, rule = B35e6n/S23

20b2o!
this rule supports the replicator and bomber from HighLife, the pre-pulsar from Grounded Life, and another interesting oscillator.

Code: Select all

x = 26, y = 15, rule = 03ajkr/2ak/3
4.2A14.2A$4.2B14.2B$6.A12.A$5.ABA10.ABA$5.ABA10.ABA$2A10.2A10.2A$2B.B

This rule has a quadratic replicator (was minimalized based on a variant of lowlife which has the replicator but is also explosive)

Code: Select all

x = 3, y = 3, rule = B3/S1e2eik3
3o$o$o!
Potential for spaceships limited in this rule due to C/2 expansion, but is an oscillator possible?
Adding S0 kills it, making a very active evolutionary sequence, while still not being explosive:

Code: Select all

x = 3, y = 3, rule = B3/S01e2eik3
3o$o$o!
There is actually a puffer based on this:

Code: Select all

x = 13, y = 13, rule = B3/S01e2eik3
6b3o$8bo$4bo3bo2$2bo3bo4bo$bo3bo5b2o$bo2bo6bo$9bo$10bo2$3o$2bo4bo$7bo
!
If you don't like S0, B2n works fine:

Code: Select all

x = 3, y = 3, rule = B2n3/S1e2eik3
3o$o$o!
c/2o working in all 3 rules:

Code: Select all

x = 5, y = 4, rule = B3/S1e2eik3
b3o2$o3bo$2ob2o!
Edit: in the S0 rule, there are many small chaos-generators made with the evolutionary sequence and a random dot.
This one is the cleanest one I could find that generates the puffer:

Code: Select all

x = 6, y = 10, rule = B3/S01e2eik3
5bo6$3o$2bo$2bo$5bo!
This one produces a mess that is almost C4_1, but produces it completely asymmetrically:

Code: Select all

x = 7, y = 3, rule = B3/S01e2eik3
3o$2bo$2bo3bo!
Can someone apgsearch it?

One transition away (+S5i) is a borderline exploding rule:

Code: Select all

#C [[ RANDOMIZE ]]
#R B3/S01e2eik35i
!
Soups stabilize after a while because the active areas are enclosed in a thick wall of dots.
For example, this one stabilizes in T=104,457:

Code: Select all

x = 64, y = 64, rule = B3/S01e2eik35i

I guess they didn't do any searching with a program? That ship isn't natural it seems.
I could've chose a better username, but oh well.

Here is a signal rulespace with cardinality 78 and oscillators of period 4, 6, 8, 13, and above.
It is between B2ci3a/S02i3i6i and B2ce3-iny4-kt5-i678/S01c2-a3-eq45678.

Here is a signal rulespace with cardinality 78 and oscillators of period 4, 6, 8, 13, and above.
It is between B2ci3a/S02i3i6i and B2ce3-iny4-kt5-i678/S01c2-a3-eq45678.

Here is a signal splitter which works in the same rulespace as the reflector, along with a 0 degree reflector.

No ships? I found this tiny c/2 in a few seconds using rlifesrc:

Smaller c/2o, a set of c/4os with the same frontend, extensible c/4o:

B2ek3ei4at/S23 supports a very small reflector, which can be used to create loops of every period 31+:

Code: Select all

x = 28, y = 28, rule = B2ek3ei4at/S23
8bo$8b2o3$6bo$bo2bobo$2o3bo3b3o$11bo2$6b2o$6b3o$15bo$14bobo$16bo$11bo$
11bobo$12bo$19b3o$20b2o2$16bo$16b3o3bo3b2o$21bobo2bo$21bo3$18b2o$19bo!
It has three basic spaceships at c/6 diagonal (J), c/2 orthogonal (U), and c/14 diagonal (W). All 3 are demonstrated in this reaction which reflects one spaceship and converts the other:

Code: Select all

x = 12, y = 11, rule = B2ek3ei4at/S23
o$3o$2bo$2b2o5$10bo$9bo$10b2o!
Besides those spaceships, there's also two more basic c/2s, two rare c/4 diagonals, and this probably-adjustable family of c/2 spaceships (just need to find a 1c/2 with an o2bo backend):

Code: Select all

x = 38, y = 51, rule = B2ek3ei4at/S23
2bo4b3o4b2o5b2o$bobo2bo3bo5bo6bo$o2bo2bobobo2bo3bo2bo3bo$o16bo6bo5b2o$

2o$30b2o!
Catagolue has even more c/2s, there's too many for me to conveniently list here.

There is a 3c/6 double-barrelled U backrake that can be suppressed, such as in the following reaction:

Code: Select all

x = 9, y = 66, rule = B2ek3ei4at/S23
bo$o19$bobo$b3o19$7bo$8bo19$b3ob3o$bobobobo$bo5bo$b2o3b2o$2b5o$4bo!
p242+12n gun using a splitter:

Code: Select all

x = 23, y = 20, rule = B2ek3ei4at/S23
7bo$6b2o4$2o$bo$o$2o2$2o$o$bo14b3o$2o16bo2$21b2o$21bo2$b2o$2bo!
I couldn't turn this faster splitter (based off of a similar looking but different starting reaction) into a gun, but it might be possible:

Code: Select all

x = 17, y = 20, rule = B2ek3ei4at/S23
11bo$11b2o4$2o$bo$o$2o12b3o$16bo$2o$o$bo$2o4$12b2o$2o10bo$bo!
This 12-cell constellation cannot be destroyed from the outside by well-separated chaos, and it may be the smallest:

Code: Select all

x = 5, y = 5, rule = B2ek3ei4at/S23
2ob2o$o3bo2$o3bo$2ob2o!
-
Another pattern of interest lies with the tub, which when suppressed from both sides becomes a replicator, and leads to several mostly adjustable gun designs:

Code: Select all

x = 85, y = 29, rule = B2ek3ei4at/S23
bo5bo13bo5bo32bo2bo2bo3bo$2o5b2o11b2o5b2o31b2ob2ob2ob2o$71b3o$67b3o3bo

2ob2o$bob3obo13bob3obo32bo2bo2bo3bo$2obobob2o11b2obobob2o$3b3o17b3o2$
28b2o$7b2o19bo$7bo$28b2o$28bo11$32b2o$33bo!
It's possible for patterns like those guns to actually extend the edges of the pattern by adding preblocks, so it might be possible to make patterns that move chaotically by being careful with replicator timings:

Code: Select all

x = 179, y = 9, rule = B2ek3ei4at/S23
