I decided to make a sandbox for my less important endeavors in the world of cellular automata.

As I'm writing this, I'm doing apgsearches for an LTL rule under the name "NiceLTL" because of it's first survival transition. I probably wont use that name elsewhere for the rule because it just sucks, but it doesn't really matter because the rule is being a bit underwhelming. There aren't any oscillators past period for nor are there any linear growth patterns. I'll keep searching but I'm also looking for a better range-2 rule.

It too has an elementary orthogonal and diagonal spaceship, and a variety of oscillators and still lifes. It's evolutionary sequences, however, are much more similar to CGOL, with long-lived, far moving sequences stemming from a relatively small pattern. Occasionally, very large and fragile "diamond" still lifes will show up from small predecessors, such as this.

The results from searching R2,C2,S4,6-9,B7-9 were much more interesting than the previous rule. On Catagolue, I nicknamed the rule PotteryLTL, in reference to its large and hollow geometrical still lifes. Fascinating to look at, but very easy to break. Anyways, here are some of the highlights from the searches.

EDIT: Restarting the search to increase the length ended up losing the exact front-end. Now I'll have to rerun the search until it arrives back at it.

While the spaceship densities of different periods might not have much of a pattern, what about in different rules?

I've made a Python script to accelerate calculating the density of spaceships and the mean density across many spaceships, so that I don't have to manually do the calculations myself. You could probably automate it even more, but for my desires I don't need that big of a sample size so it's alright.

Anyways with the script, the mean density of p2 spaceships in Life was 23.9%. Now here are the results from outer-totalistic rules, mainly from those of the lowest period. These results are mainly from large, straight spaceships found on Catagolue and elsewhere.

• 2x2 (B3/S125): 27.35% (sample size of 7)

• B3/S34: 19.26% (sample size of 9)

• Geology (B3578/S24678): 30.49% (sample size of 11)

• Stains (B3678/S235678): 37.32% (sample size of 6)

• B3/S347: 30.99% (sample size of 7)

• Highlife (B36/S23): 22.72% (sample size of 4)

• Pseudo Life (B357/S238): 31.44% (sample size of 5)

• Seeds (B2/S): 19.89% (sample size of 3)

So it seems like rules with higher conditions and/or a large amount of them have denser spaceships, from Stains at 37% having ten different conditions, to Seeds with no survival conditions at all and only one birth condition. Its not that surprising, but hey, neat to see the raw numbers.

I just realized that there's probably an INT rule out there where Sidewinders are common enough that they can be easily made through interacting Margolus oscillators. Technically, that would be the first Sidewinder gun.
