Brian's Brain

Post by Extrementhusiast » March 11th, 2010, 1:51 am

I noticed that there was no topic for this (mainly because I've been the only one posting Generations threads). Anybody found a p8 diagonal spaceship c-speed forward rake? I've found the corresponding backward rake and two breeders in different styles: one rake and one simple extender.

I'm quite talkative, aren't I?

I don't often experiment with Generations rules, but I found this ruler generator in Brian's Brain:

Are any other speeds of spaceship known (or even possible) in this rule, aside from the normal lightspeed ships or the small diagonal glider?

Quadruple diagonal spaceship rake

Code: Select all

x = 13, y = 25, rule = /2/3
4.BA$.BA.BA$A.BA$.BA$11.BA$11.BA$6.AB2.A$6.B2.BA$7.A2B$4.2A3.A.BA$5.

$11.BA$.BA$A.BA$.BA.BA$4.BA!
Based on this reaction

Code: Select all

x = 6, y = 12, rule = /2/3
4.BA$.BA.BA$A.BA$.BA7$3.2A$3.2B!
Glide symmetric spaceship

Code: Select all

x = 4, y = 17, rule = /2/3
2.BA$2.BA$.A$BA$B$A.BA$2.BA4$2.BA$A.BA$B$.A$.A$2.BA$2.BA!
Smaller one

Code: Select all

x = 4, y = 7, rule = /2/3
2.BA$2.BA$B$BA$.A$2.BA$2.BA!
Brian's Brain is my favourite Generations rule :D

A rake producing c/4 diagonal gliders:

Code: Select all

x = 109, y = 45, rule = /2/3
3$64.BA$64.BA32$5.BA93.BA$6.BA2.BA42.BA45.BA2.BA$7.BA.BA43.BA2.BA41.B
A.BA$9.BA45.BA.BA43.BA$7.BA49.BA42.BA$5.BA49.BA42.BA$4.BA48.BA43.BA$
53.BA!

A breeder filling 1/4 of the plane:

Code: Select all

x = 61, y = 40, rule = /2/3

Giving spark to your extensible spaceship:

Code: Select all

x = 26, y = 24, rule = /2/3
18.BA$19.BA3.BA$21.BA.BA$23.BA$21.BA$20.BA$19.BA13$17.BA$AB2.AB2.AB2.
AB2.A.BA$.BA2.BA2.BA2.BA2.BA.BA$20.BA!
And then perturbing it with a second rake:

Code: Select all

x = 28, y = 43, rule = /2/3
20.BA$21.BA3.BA$23.BA.BA$25.BA$23.BA$22.BA$21.BA13$19.BA$2.AB2.AB2.AB
2.AB2.A.BA$3.BA2.BA2.BA2.BA2.BA.BA$22.BA14$17.BA$18.BA2.BA$19.BA.BA$
21.BA$19.BA$17.BA$16.BA!
Moving the second rake up and down produces different reactions

Code: Select all

x = 26, y = 44, rule = /2/3
18.BA$19.BA3.BA$21.BA.BA$23.BA$21.BA$20.BA$19.BA13$17.BA$AB2.AB2.AB2.
AB2.A.BA$.BA2.BA2.BA2.BA2.BA.BA$20.BA15$15.BA$16.BA2.BA$17.BA.BA$19.B
A$17.BA$15.BA$14.BA!

Code: Select all

x = 27, y = 46, rule = /2/3
18.BA$19.BA3.BA$21.BA.BA$23.BA$21.BA$20.BA$19.BA13$17.BA$AB2.AB2.AB2.
AB2.A.BA$.BA2.BA2.BA2.BA2.BA.BA$20.BA16$15.BA$16.BA2.BA$17.BA.BA$19.B

Very regular breeder, which is glider constructible

Code: Select all

x = 34, y = 95, rule = /2/3

B$9.AB5$2A$2B18$14.2A$14.2B5$18.2A$18.2B!
p4 butterfly rake (minimal possible period). I deleted some cells to make it as small as possible

Code: Select all

x = 11, y = 9, rule = /2/3
2.BA$2.A.BA$6.BA$2.A6.A$6.BA.BA$.2A.BA3.BA$A2.A$.A$A!

Given some supporting photons, a butterfly can be made go at 4c/8 orthogonally:

Code: Select all

x = 63, y = 32, rule = /2/3
61.B$62.A$56.BA.BAB$56.BA2.A3$48.BA$48.BA3$40.BA$40.BA3$32.BA$32.BA3$
24.BA$24.BA3$16.BA$16.BA3$8.BA$8.BA3$BA$BA!
Other angles are obviously also possible. The basic reaction is (1,3)c/4 inwards:

Code: Select all

x = 47, y = 28, rule = /2/3:T400,400
45.B$46.A$40.BA.BAB$40.BA2.A2$35.BA$35.BA2$30.BA$30.BA2$25.BA$25.BA2$

—Are any oscillators known for this rule? There are no natural ones, but it might be possible to engineer some. For example, suppose a spaceship that fires off a copy of itself; put 4 on a square so that the original 4 annihilate pairwise, then the daughter copies repeat the reaction.

I know about only one oscillator in this rule, which suprisingly is p3 (odd period, unlike all even-period spaceships)

Code: Select all

x = 4, y = 4, rule = /2/3
2.A$A2B$.2BA$.A!
This pattern is even on wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brian%27s_Brain
Edit:
Here you can download nice collection of oscillators: http://psoup.math.wisc.edu/mcell/users/giles_e.zip
First question ever. Often referred to as The Question. When this question is asked in right place in right time, no one can lie. No one can abstain. But when The Question is asked, silence will fall. Silence must fall. The Question is: Doctor Who?

Another breeder, using the same type of rake, but a different reflecting reaction.

Code: Select all

x = 13, y = 21, rule = /2/3

Both your breeder and mine fill 1/2 of the plane.

Replicator on a moving and growing diagonal line:

Code: Select all

x = 8, y = 8, rule = /2/3
2A$2BA$2.BA$3.BA$2.A.BA$2.BA.BA$BA4.BA$6.BA!
This one produces backward diagonal lines that shrink to nothing:

Code: Select all

x = 6, y = 6, rule = /2/3
2A$2BA$2.BA$.A.BA$.BA.BA$4.BA!
Both types occur "natually" out of chaos but then collide with other patterns.

Edit:
make spaceships:

Code: Select all

x = 11, y = 11, rule = /2/3
2A$2BA$2.BA$3.BA$2.A.BA$2.BA.BA$6.BA$5.A.BA$5.BA.BA$9.BA$9.BA!

Not really that surprizing, p2 oscillators are impossible in Generations rules and p4+ would set much tighter constraints.

(also a ton of spaceships are p1)

Cool, don't think I've seen that fractal emulated before.

This puffer has a very interesting backwards output.
The diagonal-ship output from each half is exactly in the right position to terminate what would otherwise be infinitely growing diagonal lines.

Code: Select all

I noticed something: if you let the breeder grow, it is a sierpinsky triangle generator, but in a unique way: it actually "prints" one. It is clearly visible at a zoom of 2:1. It moves at the puffer's speed.

I think this is the smallest non-chaotic breeder possible in the rule. Is there any three-cell breeder, then?

Code: Select all

x = 2, y = 27, rule = /2/3

Three cell is impossible. But with 4 cells here is totally non chaotic (no chaotic element at all), and smaller bounding box:

Code: Select all

x = 3, y = 10, rule = /2/3
2A9$.2A!
EDIT And another one (larger bounding box area but smaller largest edge):

Code: Select all

x = 7, y = 8, rule = /2/3
2A7$5.2A!
EDIT2 The difference between totally non chaotic and "mainly non chaotic" can be sensed in golly. Totally non chaotic will run fast with steps of 8^10 etc. unlike mainly non chaotic will work slowly with steps of 8^3 already.
