Hehe I think he is talking about the peculiar eater reaction on the top right... I'm pretty sure he knows the pattern itself is not useful. And yes, that kinda thing occasionally happens as a pleasant surprise in ptbsearch and Catgl. In a similar note, I've found a boat catalysis of a pi in which the boat is transformed into a tub and recovers to a boat again. (I am not talking about the p8 pi-to-HWSS factory, which exhibits similar behavior:) )

Was firing gliders into a hive + blinker constellation that had come up while playing with catalysts when I stumbled across this.
The 13-bitter is in mniemiec's database as a 9G object, and I can't find a count for the 17-bit SL.

Which database are you looking at? 13.217 takes 5 gliders, and 17.2203 takes 7 gliders. Both are made the same way - 3 gliders for a hat, then 2 gliders to add an eater head on one or both sides. That mechanism has been well known for a long time, and the raw synthesis files I have date back to 2000, and that was the last time they were edited. I am curious where a 9-glider synthesis came from.
