Which database are you looking at? 13.217 takes 5 gliders, and 17.2203 takes 7 gliders. Both are made the same way - 3 gliders for a hat, then 2 gliders to add an eater head on one or both sides. That mechanism has been well known for a long time, and the raw synthesis files I have date back to 2000, and that was the last time they were edited.
