If one adds two blocks to a known method of constructing a unix, it forms a large 26-bit still life:

Code: Select all

x = 14, y = 14, rule = B3/S23

However, there is another natural reaction that produces this object:

Code: Select all

x = 17, y = 17, rule = B3/S23

It seems obvious in retrospect, but I don't anyone ever actually having done it. It takes 8 gliders, which is better than 12 from the natural method. It can also be done with many other inducting still-lifes (e.g. pond, but nothing that protrudes farther than that).

By building the unix starting with the long barge, rather than the blocks, this takes 11 gliders, but adds the flexibility that the inducting still-lifes can be added in cis- and/or trans- positions. This is, in fact, the traditional way to make something like this; unix is just what happens when you make two siamese dock-with-tubs but don't induct them.

On the other hand, adding inducting still-lifes to an existing unix would be very difficult, since they would have to advance at c to avoid the receding spark.

Pretty standard, though. What were you doing to turn that up, if you weren't deliberately trying to channel a switch engine?

Here's some prior art -- you even got the same form of the catalyst, and there are a lot of choices for it.
