2015 has given us many wonders, and I thought it would be a great idea to renew the tradition of the Pattern of the Year competition.

I now encourage you to enter the patterns that you consider to be the coolest, funniest of otherwise best. You may enter both your own and other people's patterns in any sensible amount, but the patterns should have been discovered in 2015 and should work under B3/S23. It is so far not necessary to post any links or descriptions, although later I will ask for them. If everybody else thinks that the pattern you entered should not be here, I will remove it. Catagolue is not a pattern.

Inserting gliders spaced multiples of 60 generations apart, where the nth glider is at position f(n) into the top right of the filter causes gliders to be emitted from the bottom left at positions asymptotic to 1, f(1), f(f(1)), etc. This proves that for any growth rate achievable as a p60 stream of gliders, a non-trivially slower growth rate can be constructed. Ooh, the Quadratic Sawtooth! That thing is really impressive. Here's a link to Extrementhusiast's actual assembled 785x785 pattern. The collaboration included Scorbie, Alexey_Nigin, and Kiran, I believe, and was based on an initial idea by A for Awesome.

It's been a good year for collaboration, certainly -- as the current LifeWiki entry for Dart indicates (just for example). Happy New Year to you all, and here's to 2016!

That sounds right to me.

... (although it's entirely plausible I've forgotten about other discoveries that year).

Chris Cain's Centipede and the half-baked knightship variants, including the HBK gun, and the weekender distaff (hey, I like that new wiki tag!) and Switch engine ping-pong (23-cell quadratic growth) seem to me like very good runner-up candidates for Pattern of the Year 2014 -- but they're just plain outclassed by the waterbear.

EDIT: I'm not so sure about the collaborative effort to find syntheses for all 16- and 17-bit still lifes, though -- both of those projects were completed in 2014. They really seem right up there in waterbear territory. Maybe we could do a vote for 2014 Pattern of the Year, along with the 2015 one? Better late than never.

I remember the Snark got specifically mentioned for Pattern of the Year 2013, and the semi-Snark and loafer synthesis and guns and a few other things would be good runners-up. Probably no need to reach back that far. There was a page for 2012 Pattern of the Year, though I'm not sure the voting was ever really completed or tabulated. Doesn't much matter -- seems like making the list is more important than which one wins, anyway.

Speaking of that, here's another 2015 candidate I forgot: Chris Cain's glider-to-weekender-to-glider converter.

Not sure I'd want the waterbear in the running for 2015, come to think of it. Seems like there's plenty of new 2015 stuff for a good competition already.

I want to nominate the Demonoid, and Alexey's Sawmill, specifically the recursive filter, which is probably my favorite pattern of 2015.

Those were in my original post, so do not get confused if you don't see them in "Other people's entries".

I intended to do it a year ago, but do-not-remember-what distracted me from doing this. Whatever it was, it is no longer in effect, so I think I will make that competition. But I do not want to run two competitions simultaneously, for people can confuse them. After all, we have already been waiting for a year, and waiting for an additional week does not sound bad.

Indeed, and this marks the start of the second part of the competition. This part is arguably the most important one, for it is the time when we document the entries. Here is what I made so far:

• Demonoids are highly-simplified, diagonally-moving variants of the original Gemini spaceship. The 0hd Demonoid is the only case where a spaceship gun pattern was completed before the actual spaceship. By Chris Cain and Dave Greene.
• Syntheses of B29, X66, half-X66 with HWSS, Pushalong 1, 25P3H1V0.2, 30P5H2V0, 30P4H2V0.4, a pufferfish spaceship, and the weekender were discovered in 2015, which exceeds the number of spaceship syntheses found in any previous year, including 1970. By Extrementhusiast, Tanner Jacobi, and Chris Cain. Anybody else?
• Sawtooth 177 is currently the smallest known sawtooth. By Thunk, Tanner Jacobi, Chris Cain, Adam P. Goucher, and Dave Greene.
• HBK Gun is an extremely large and complex gun that fires parallel HBKs. It is the only gun to produce non-self-constructing macro-spaceships. By Chris Cain and Michael Simkin.
• Recursive Filter allows the creation of extremely slow-growing patterns. A single recursive filter gives the growth rate of log*(t), which is slower than the growth rate of any pattern constructed before. • Sinkin Glider Gun is the smallest gun ever constructed. The previous record-holder, Gosper glider gun, was constructed as long ago as 1970! By Michael Simkin.

Thanks! I've been writing up a few more notes off and on today. There was some overlap, so I've removed a few of mine, but some had a different enough perspective that I included them anyway. @Alexey, sorry about the mess:

• Demonoids and gun for one of them: The 10hd and 0hd Demonoids are the first self-constructing diagonal spaceships. The 0hd Demonoid, completed by chris_c on 6 December 2016 in collaboration with dvgrn, is the only case where a spaceship gun pattern was completed before the actual spaceship.
   
• Syntheses of cool spaceships: glider constructions for the B29, X66, half-X66 with HWSS, Pushalong 1, 25P3H1V0.2, 30P5H2V0, 30P4H2V0.4, a pufferfish spaceship, and the weekender were discovered in 2015, along with syntheses for the Gemini and 0hd Demonoid macro-spaceships. Extrementhusiast, Kazyan, and chris_c were the biggest contributors to this collaborative effort. More new spaceship syntheses were discovered in 2015 than in any previous year, including 1970.
   
• Kazyan's syringe -- the fast G-to-H that Herschel plumbers have been wishing for for a decade, also allowing for fast signal splitters and other much more efficient logic circuits, including self-constructing circuitry.
   
• simeks' new single-lane construction arm toolkit -- an important result for simplifying self-constructing circuitry, especially those where a recipe needs to be duplicated, as in the linear propagator, not just interpreted as in the Demonoid and Gemini. Someone (gmc_nxtman) made a LifeWiki page for the pattern and named it "log****(t) growth", I did not want the pattern to be stuck with such a boring name and renamed it "Sawmill". However, as the discoverer of the pattern, Alexey_Nigin has the right to name it.

Also, I came up with an improved system of voting:
Once the patterns are listed, every voter gives a score to each pattern. The only restriction on the scores is that they all must be real and the average absolute deviation of the scores given by an individual voter is smaller or equal to some arbitrary fixed constant k. After the vote, the scores for each pattern are added up and compared.

For example, if n=17 (the number of entries) and the arbitrary constant is set to k=1/n=1/17 and the deviation from the median is used, a voter can vote {1,0,0,0,0,0,0,0,0,0,0,0,0,0,0,0,0} or {-1,0,0,0,0,0,0,0,0,0,0,0,0,0,0,0,0} or {-1/2,1/4,0,0,0,0,0,0,0,0,0,0,0,-1/4,0,0,0} or...

This system provides higher flexibility then the standard "up-vote one pattern" system.

The cockroach should feel relaxed and comfortable, or the method will not work. Tell your cockroach a good joke so it laughs out loud. Quickly take your syringe and inject a drop of poison into cockroach's mouth. You can repeat this procedure until there are no cockroaches in your house.

The usual methodology in these cases, used in the AP poll sports rankings involves each voter ordering the entries. Then, the voter's top choice is given n points, the next n-1, and so on until their nth choice is given 1 point (for some value of n). The points given by each voter are then added together to determine the final result.

It's not ideal, but more straightforward than Kiran's system.
