There's no particular downside--I'd just considered the cell to the right to be more representative of a Pi's evolution, if choosing a "center" is arbitrary anyway.

This H-to-G indeed worked with the block instead of the fancier catalyst.
But it also works well with the standard eater 1, to create an H-to-G23. Incidently both gliders have timing 14:

Code: Select all

x = 33, y = 36, rule = LifeHistory

The new SE30T14 has been added to both collections now, along with a fix for an incorrect download to the H-to-G posting.

A collection with fifty more H-to-G converters came in from chris_c yesterday -- thanks, Chris! -- so the October 13 H-to-G update is based on that. The new H-to-Gs are mostly known combinations from the elementary-conduits collection, I believe. I never did go through and add all known small conduits combined with all known small X-to-G converters, so a lot more gaps in the table could certainly be filled with a systematic approach.

The elementary-conduits collection is coming along pretty well, and I'm really looking forward to getting to the point where it's possible to generate this H-to-G collection by running a script.

The script would ask for an input object, do an exhaustive Hersrch-like search, and list all the glider outputs available, in order of complexity, lane, time, bounding-box size, or whatever. Maybe it will even accept an initial pattern that includes any other nearby obstructions to be avoided, including the conduit that delivers the input object,.

Great update! Many thanks to chris_c and dvgrn!

I looked through just the H-to-G:s I've posted myself and found a few missing. Also a few other notes.

Pattern here, notes for each item below:

7. SW10T97 in the collection has an eater which isn't necessary (in red here)

8. NW39T203 in the collection has an eater which is never used (in red here)

9. NE19T-2 and SE33T-2 are shown in the collection with not-very-obvious glider eaters (in red here) for their additional NW19T102 outputs. Since these are two of the most important syringe compatible splitters, I think it's important to clarify this.

Just one thing: the other isomer of the gourmet catalyst forms a cleaner weld (actually the 'weld' is merely concatenation of the two catalysts :)) in the following adjustable H-to-G:

Code: Select all

EDIT: One more: on the first paragraph of the H-to-G collection, there are two identical forms of SE-2T47. I assume the top form is suggested for minimal bounding box. In that case, the following form is smaller:

It comes from here. Unfortunately, the above device does not fit in that situation.

I think it's SW10T108/SW25T179/SE28?T19? (The SE is the possibly new one.) It seems too simple not to be known, though.

No need for apologies in any of these "collection" threads, as far as I'm concerned. New contributions are always welcome -- and yes, this is a new one as far as I can recall. The collection in the first post has only one H-to-G with an output on that lane, NE1T22, and this one is NE1T49. Thanks!

Theoretically it should be easy for anyone to check this kind of thing. Run the H-to-G labeler script in the first post in this thread, and then check in the big H-to-G table attached to the same message, and see if an H-to-G with that same label is already present. If that doesn't work or doesn't make sense for anybody, just let me know...!

At some point I'll probably clean up the collection so it works the same as the Elementary Conduits collection, with a ZIP file of all the separate converter RLE files, names in the comments at the top, and so on. Hopefully I'll get recovery times added here as well -- that's the one big missing detail for the ECC, along with maybe the delta X, deltaY information.

I hope that some time in the future, there is a page like catagolue that one could upload new conduits/syntheses/etc and it automatically verifies and uploads it to the collection. I would make that kind of thing if I could, but I don't have any knowledge in server/webapps etc :/ just wait long enough!

This C-to-G that was found by Kazyan seems to have been abandoned due to similarities to another c-to-g, but is actually slightly different:

Just something to throw into the H-to-Gn collection on the next update -- there's not really anything new here.

I was thinking about how to make the smallest possible "figure eight" signal track (i.e., where one part of the conduit gets re-used, but then a period doubler produces two different signal paths that both lead back to the same place). The idea was to end up with a smaller p800+ gun pattern... but then this distraction came along.

Seems like I must have strung these pieces together before, but it hasn't found its way into the H-to-Gn collection yet. A couple of Snarks will turn H-to-G#2 into a fairly reasonable composite H-to-G(n) converter for any even n. It works right down to G0, where the current adjustable H-to-G(even) only works down to G10:

Code: Select all

#C H-to-G#2 plus two Snarks = H-to-G0+2N
#C Repeat time at G0 is 185 ticks; much lower for G8+
x = 49, y = 48, rule = LifeHistory

I think this is actually an SE7T116 (and an NW39T203). Two transparent output lanes, so a couple of Snarks could make it into an adjustable G0, G2, or G4 glider pair. Not that that's necessarily very useful -- it just shows that there's enough room to use Snarks with either transparent lane, and that's definitely a nice feature:

Are you using the script from the first message in this thread, to generate those numbers? It looks like it, based on the red label text, but when I try running that script against your pattern I get a different label -- SE-2T80.

You might be running an out-of-date version of the H-to-G identifier script. Your timing calculation seems to be from the Y=0 line, which was the way I wrote the script originally... but now the official calculation is from the canonical form of the glider when it crosses the X=0 line, for reasons that were described starting in this message from chris_c (the discussion went on for a while from there, but the conclusion was that the script got updated to simplify the math involved with stringing F and Fx conduits together).

That SE-2T80 glider output has been around for a good while. It shows up in two places in Stephen Silver's original H-to-G collection -- it's also one of the optional outputs for the HSE39T59 converter:

I don't think I've seen either of these before. We have a couple of SW7's, but they're both much slower -- T value in the 200's. SW7T94 should be added to both H-to-G and H-to-Gn collections.

There are some fairly decent options here for a search for a new tandem-glider receiver. Even the three-glider transmitter recovers in 151 ticks, which isn't too bad -- and the G9 recovers in 101 ticks, which is better than the old standard transceiver can do.

I forgot to mention that the same G1 part was already in the Conduit Collection, but I think the SW7 is still new.

An H-to-G that seems to be new, timing NW15T113.
It also makes a nice addition in the "S4" category of syringe rephasers:

The tub+eater attachment works here for an extra glider:

That's good news, because it allows for a compact syringe splitter with a new mod-8 timing:

And we already have an NW15T92, where this new one is NW15T113, so when we don't need the extra glider we can get an even/odd timing change by swapping out the H-to-G. Here are p456+8N and p451+8N guns (maybe +/-8N if there's a weld I didn't see immediately):

NW15T113 has a repeat time way down at 70 ticks, too -- very nice!

By the way, you know that bellman catalyst is called "blinker eater," right?

Wow! Both Spartan, and both with glider pair outputs. Unfortunately the G5 in the H-to-3G isn't quite compatible with either Herschel receiver orientation -- the following glider arrives a little too soon. There's a nice Spartan H-to-2G with an adjustable NE output, though, using the loaf2GtoG:

Unfortunately it doesn't work for SW outputs; that would have opened up all kinds of possibilities for, well, self-correcting Spartan circuitry of various kinds... probably mostly not very useful circuitry, since it would have lousy repeat times, though. So probably it's just as well.

The H-to-G2 connects to a Herschel receiver very nicely any way you try:

Recovery time for these is 174 ticks in all cases, I think, except for the one at the far right with the optional 180-degree transceiver output, which isn't safe until way up at 330 ticks.

I haven't checked all of the other G2 inputs in the Elementary Conduits Collection yet, but it looks like they'll mostly work just as well.

I've started updating the H-to-G collection to include these, and also to record repeat times for everything in the collection. Will end up with a separate file for each H-to-G, along the lines of the Elementary Conduits Collection... further bulletins as events warrant.
