@above: quite a unique fuse--it appears to burn at a speed of 7c/11. Of course, it may be difficult to use because of all the junk it releases, but it is still an uncommon speed.

That is indeed a rather unusual object to find floating in one's soup. Fairly quick spontaneous generation, too -- it should allow a cheaper synthesis than a standard incremental process would. I don't know for sure whether a "natural" recipe is already known to the experts, though.

The object is labeled "00d800d8000000fe010102e5012600c0" in Andrzej Okrasinski's soup searches -- apparently it showed up 19 times in 12 billion+ 20-cell-square soups, so there must be a predecessor or two that isn't _too_ unlikely.

No doubt somebody can do better, but here's the recipe boiled down to a pi, a B, and a 9-cell object that I probably ought to know how to synthesize:

It keeps a fairly low population for over 30 ticks, eventually travelling a long distance leftward and resolving into a Herschel plus junk. Does anyone have a synthesis handy for this thing, or know anything else about it?

The 30-cell still life I know I've seen around somewhere before, probably in soup-census or Glue results. Doesn't seem to be in anyone's top-100 list, but for example it was found 121 times in Okrasinski's soups -- it's listed under the name "cis-mirrored_very_long_worm". So no doubt it's in Nathaniel's soup-search database as well.

Well, I did say somebody would be able to do better. Very nice!

I didn't look very hard for replacements for the 9-cell active object that I went on about, because I'm actually more interested in it than in the 29-cell still life -- it seems like the kind of thing that might show up in a new Herschel conduit someday (but only if there's an easy way to generate it.)

Well, I put the pieces of my old computer back together, maybe six months ago, and tried to get my most recent alpha version of Glue (from January 2006!) running again, just to see if I could -- but didn't have any luck immediately. I'm not sure why. I do remember that Paul Chapman wrote Glue2 as a Smalltalk prototype that was eventually supposed to get translated into something more modern and/or efficient -- and the version of Smalltalk he was using worked much more happily in Windows 95/98 than in Windows XP. XP's OS emulation modes helped some, as I recall, but there were still some odd problems from time to time.

Anyway, I wasn't immediately able to locate a runnable copy, for whatever reason. Paul wasn't very close to having what he considered a usable utility, anyway -- he used to have to make fairly arcane code changes each time the program had to be applied to a new problem, and the idea was eventually to come up with a much more user-adjustable version. Which hasn't happened in the last five years, but that doesn't necessarily mean it won't happen in the next five.

On the other hand, it may mean at this point that it would be more work to recover and improve on the old Glue2 than it would be to design a new Glue3 from scratch -- and possibly include a few new options this time around... such as the ability to specify multiple input directions, along the lines of Andrew Wade's two-arm Gemini constructions.

It's a shame that soups like this from Andrzej Okrasinski's census were never made public (apart from the P2 Lightbulb); Several rare oscillators like Tim Coe's P8 and the P5 Fumarole occurred naturally, and the soups might have led to improved glider syntheses.

He did release a results document on his website, but it was hosted on Geocities which was closed shortly thereafter.

Luckily, most of his website seems to have been saved on archive.org:
