Seems like a very versatile back end of an X-to-H, as you just need to convert the block to a particular one-bit spark, and there's a lot of room:

Code: Select all

x = 25, y = 36, rule = LifeHistory
13.A$13.3A$16.A$15.2A4$23.2A$23.2A11$19.C$9.2D7.C.C$9.2D7.C.C$16.C2.C
8$15.3D$17.D$2.2A12.3D$.A.A$.A$2A!
It feels like I've posted this here already.

Looks familiar--I think you'd stated that derivatives of it could produce a hilarious gun if we were lucky.

There's nothing in my glider-and-bait-block CatForce results that would immediately turn that into a G-to-X, unfortunately, but there should be other ways to produce bait objects in place of that block.

I've updated the H-to-H collection once again. I added a few conduits involving unusual intermediates, and a smaller but slower and less spartan version of Bx106. In addition, I removed the tick mark "-" from almost all conduits; I left it on conduits where a glider construction is not yet known (or at least that I know of).

Here is it for Hersrch (new conduits only, with y values inverted, and no intermediate objects):

Previous version of the collection:

And here are the conduits that have repeat time < 75 (for gunmakers):

Code: Select all

x = 1444, y = 108, rule = LifeHistory

This still life can be hit, successively with four Herschels, destroying them in the process. After the last one, there is nothing left, so I'm guessing it could be used as a timer? Major downside, the glider/other synthesis (that would be needed for this purpose) seems hard:

Code: Select all

x = 90, y = 19, rule = B3/S23
26b2o$b3o21bo2bo$bo24b2o$3o2$19bo$10b2o7bobo12b2o21b2o$9bobo7b3o11bobo

18bo4$87b3o$88bo$86b3o!
Alternatively, this could be used to create one of the two beehives for collision later with a glider instead.

Not really. You would need a much clearer sense of where your next signal was coming from. Is another Herschel going to follow one of the destroyed ones? If so, then it's going to explode, because there's no conduit there any more to carry it away -- and no room to add one, since you already need four conduits coming in from all four directions to put those Herschels in place. There are much much simpler ways to count to four, or to create beehives.

-- Not to discourage you, but I think it would be a good idea for you to get some experience building complete Herschel circuits -- say, contribute a new smallest gun of some period to the new guns thread -- before you post more suggestions along these lines, or more of this kind of thing.

Alternatively, at least invest the time to read all the way through Gustavo's thread. It will give you a much better sense of what structures and reactions could conceivably be useful for someone else to know about, and which are just random interactions that are not really worth mentioning anywhere outside of the Sandbox.

Yes, that's a good description of the problem. When you come up with any kind of reaction where an object gets destroyed that will be very difficult to rebuild, and you don't show any way to do the rebuilding, then what you're doing is more like cellular-automata artwork than repeatable circuitry. Nothing wrong with that, but it would fit better in Useless Discoveries than in this already cluttered conduit-hunting thread.

I really did not expect the four Herschel counter to be THAT useless :D

But I do see how might have been unnecessary to post it immediately here without further consideration.

Yes Gustavo definitely became the complete uselessness baseline. I agree with Dave the herschels posted are completely useless, but to know your pattern is useless is kinda simple: you should try small alteration of the pattern and see do you get similar stuff or not. Your posts are just too trivial as this kind of interactions is very common.

I would suggest to newcomers not waste time on placing random stuff and hoping they're somehow interesting, and to try and improve existing goals and designs. Even if you fail, you get much more useful experience from trying and improve existing designs, than from just randomly place stuff and hope you got something.

A C-to-R with much greater offset:

Code: Select all

x = 26, y = 34, rule = LifeHistory
10.2A$10.2A6$23.2D$24.2D$24.D5$2A$.A$.A.A$2.2A4$13.3C$13.C2.C$15.2C7$
4.2A$5.A$2.3A$2.A!
Unfortunately, there's currently no input available, due to the lower left eater, and it's going to be fairly tricky to get that R out.

A ridiculous transparent block for a pi, which may lead to a P-H or something like that:

Code: Select all

x = 15, y = 6, rule = LifeHistory
2C$2C2$12.3C$12.C.C$12.C.C!
Incidentally, that one leftover beehive could turn this into a period doubler.

Actually generation 52 of this converges on generation 89 of this, so it can use the same exit:

That's an impressive transparent block, even if it won't set any records for recovery time (except maybe in the "slow" direction).

It all looks a little unlikely unless a way can be found to clean up that beehive, though. The period-doubling option sounded nice, but it produces a spark big enough to exclude all known X-to-Pi conduits as input, I think -- except for giant synchronized things that build the pi with gliders from a distance. Here are the reaction envelopes, with the "doubler" spark in red:

It doesn't seem impossible to dig up conduits that throw centuries and LOMS and suchlike, a little further from their catalysts, to turn that into a usable elementary conduit. A couple of C conduits:

Code: Select all

x = 55, y = 34, rule = B3/S23

bo3bo$8bo2b2o25bo2b2o$5bobo27bobo$5b2o28b2o!
The latter would be a C-to-B, but the left fishhook is damaged if the B is allowed to evolve normally; Conduit 1 salvages it here.

Yup, that one is known -- SE22T74. You can find out by copying your LifeHistory pattern into a new Golly universe, and then running the recognizer script from the clipboard -- only takes a few seconds.

I still need to make a list in a code block of all the standardized H-to-G names, so that it becomes trivial to do a text search on the first page of that thread and see if SE22T74 is going to be in the stamp collection.

Here's the minimal form -- turns out the block+eater combination just suppresses the standard second natural glider:

Code: Select all

And since H-to-multi-Gs are generally more valuable than plain H-to-Gs, it's maybe worth mentioning that the block-and-eater is optional again:

Not quite Spartan, but the catalysts are nicely separated -- it should be easily slow-salvo constructible if that's ever needed.

I should probably update my conduit collections. Anyway, the goal with suppressing the 2nd natural glider was to try and find a way to clean up a different evolutionary sequence, but I ended up getting off track. Nice to see that Pi output wasn't entirely unusable after all.
