The bun-on-snake (13.224) synthesis can be reduced by 1 glider, because the rightmost block can be replaced by a glider. This was previously known. Also, there is a 4-glider synthesis of this still-life:

Well, maybe. The fuse is reburnable, but there doesn't seem to be a way to get rid of the excess blinker, from quick experiments. The blocks from a second trail can eat them, but that just pushes the problem down the line. Anyone else have ideas?

My idea is that this is unlikely to produce a new oblique Caterpillar, though it might result in new entertaining agars or indefinitely reburnable weird patterns on a torus, if the blinker output problem can be solved.

The main limitation is that the blocks are spaced so closely together that there are no open glider lanes, or even LWSS lanes, between them. Seems like that would be pretty close to a minimum requirement for a workable Caterpillar track. Even if there were an interaction between two of these oblique climbers that magically suppressed both sets of blinkers somehow, any output gliders would be likely to appear between the two lines of blocks, and then they couldn't get out to do anything useful.

Or if gliders appeared on one side or the other, you couldn't have additional helper tracks on that side -- unless you could destroy and rebuild them very easily, but that seems fairly unlikely to work out.

One major flaw here is that the spark of the reaction destroys the created blinker, so we'd have to somehow move the blinker after the spark dies or something. So this thing would be biiiiiiiig.

There's no room for anything to go through the tracks so I struggle to see how this will ever be more than a reburnable fuse. Also, it is c/12 and not c/9, and I don't know if it being c/12 diagonal will kill off all your interest.

It might have some nice combinations with corderships and switch engines though!

I tried to stabilise the c/12 diagonal r-pentomino fuse. The best I could do are these four, none of them look promising as they only keep going as long as they do due to luck rather than a repeating backend stabilising the reaction. It seems very unlikely to me that there's a reburnable fuse in there, despite the tantalising blinker debris.

So I was messing around with a flotilla containing a long OWSS escorted by two HWSS's, and this slightly sparky flotilla resulted:

Found by extreme boredom: barges can be used to simulate linear alkanes. Assuming the live cells represent hydrogen, and the dead cells inside represent carbon.
