How about searching light speed signals with various speed?

hello guys, I was too busy to posting here.
Anyway I came up with this while searching about (1,1)c/8 diagonal spaceship.
We can find a lot of spaceships have various speed, direction and periods in CGOL.
Like diagonal 2c3, 5c9, c2 signal gabriel posted in his site .
Why other lightspeed signals aren't?
Can small adjustable spaceships overrun the speed limit of (|x|+|y|)/P = 1?

Welcome back! "Lightspeed" might not be the word you're looking for, since that means the fixed speed of 1 cell per generation. Are you asking why signals of other speeds haven't been found -- traveling through stable wires, not empty space like a spaceship? Say, a 3c/8 or 2c/9 or whatever?

Basically, any of these _might_ be found at any time, if someone decides to run an ambitious enough search. Or it might just so happen that as a consequence of the specific rules of B3/S23, no such signal exists at any reasonable size. Probably something huge could be designed for most speeds, along the lines of simsim314's caterloopillar, or using universal constructors, but that doesn't seem too relevant to your question.

Dean Hickerson's 2c/3 and 5c/9 signals were the only ones within reach of (what I think was) a reasonably comprehensive search for such things, using the amount of computer power available in 1997. If someone looked equally hard with a fast computer now... something new might well turn up, along with re-finding the old small signals. No guarantees, though.

The hypothetical new signals would be slightly bigger and more complex, but probably only slightly. The difficulty of the search increases exponentially as you add more unknown cells, so we really can't explore a much bigger fraction of the Space of All Possible Signals, than we could twenty years ago.

Anyway, in all these cases, either there happens to be a reasonably small structure that moves at a given speed, or not. Along similar lines, there isn't really a lot of rhyme or reason about why the c/7 loafer and the c/10 copperhead happen to exist, but most likely nothing else as small as a loafer at any other sub c/10 speed. (At lower numbers -- i.e., faster speeds -- any such small spaceship would have been found already by various exhaustive searches.)

I know that it is possible to have lightspeed signals.
For one, there is a lightspeed wire article on the wiki. Orthogonal period 2 signals can be sent through it at c, and, quite conveniently, the signal rebuilds the wire behind it. I have experimented with this a bit, but have only invented a stabilization for the ends. Which gets destroyed by the signal. :(
Also, there are a great number of ways to burn a diagonal line of cells at c. I haven't been able to get this to turn corners, though. Or rebuild itself.
It'd be interesting if we could find a viable lightspeed signal. I don't know what it'd be used for, though. I think a great variety of conduits conveniently handle signaling problems nowadays.
There is life on Mars. We put it there with not-completely-sterilized rovers.
And, for that matter, the Moon, Jupiter, Titan, and 67P/Churyumov–Gerasimenko.

Nice construction! It doesn't have to be quite that complicated, though. A few minutes of experimenting reduced the turn to this, even without the Seeds of Destruction Game -- so there's probably something with a smaller footprint:

Rebuilding anything along these lines is another matter, though -- not impossible, exactly, but fairly unpleasant. Much better to use the beehive-chain lightspeed fuse (see the "Lightspeed signals on beehive trails" section) -- or there's a diagonal lightspeed signal that rebuilds its wire there, too, a little farther down. Unfortunately there doesn't seem to be much hope of glider-constructing the actual signal in that case.

Somebody definitely needs to write a definition for Jason Summers' telegraph on the LifeWiki. Probably me, since I've had it on my to-do list for almost a year now...

I think I seem to have forgotten something. What I said is not a 'disposable' Lightspeed Signals, but re-burnables.
Maybe it's a little late, But.. Namely I means looking for Lightspeed signals, Lightspeed wires and Bubbles -It seems that it is also called as Agar crawler.- which have various directions and speeds. But, Come to think of it, it is not a bad idea to find 'fuses'.

It's interesting in that it almost re-forms the stripes agar at the back, though it does so in a way which is incompatible with stabilising it completely. It's probably not that interesting because it travels through an unusual stable wick.

These two examples are not compatible with each other. The first is a potential frontend for a 2c/4 bubble, as you say, but the second travels along the grain of the stripes agar rather than across it. Even though the second can be used on the outside of a 2c/4 along the grain greyship it can't be used as the side of a bubble because there is no possible frontend to match it up with. I can't remember where but I'm sure it's been shown that a signal along the grain in the stripes agar can only travel at c.

There was a brief discussion of about creating a "reverse greyship" in the agar crawler thread but no further progress on finding the required corners.

BTW, I'm not sure about the term "agar crawler". "Signal" is a term which has been around for quite some time, particularly for things that travel in stable wicks, and anything which can travel in the stripes agar can travel in a wick comprised of zebra stripes and a stable edge.

Yes, that would work. Nice! I see that it can be reduced down a lot more than that though. This kind of fuse is nice, because it travels c diagonally, while the orthogonal wire, if you managed to put a corner in it, would degrade to an average speed of .5c diagonally. However, the wire can rebuild itself, and this fuse can't.

Also, I like that aircraft stabilization in dvgrn's gif. It disappears when the signal reaches it, while the other stabilization turns into a block. This way, it could be more easily be used to create a desired effect.

I spent some time trying to find a shorter back corner for the top of the bubble without any success, but I'm sure one does exist - it might just be very wide. There are also numerous other repeating components which could be used as the back-end of the bubble - all with spatial period of 8. I tried stabilising a few others (without success) but there are many more possibilities which I didn't try. I didn't find any with spatial period of 4, 6 or 10, nor could I find a symmetric component so that the back corner at the bottom could be reused.

P.S. Even though this thread aimed to search for signals with speed < c, I'm posting here because there doesn't seem to be a more appropriate thread.

Here's an alternative solution to the fixed length tail problem. It is entirely p2 instead of needing a p4 corner but the repeating component has a larger spatial period (24 instead of 8 ).

It's simple enough that there are plenty of other corners available should a different total width be required.

There is also a symmetrical component (which is the reason I got to looking at this problem again). It is however p4 and a bit more complicated than the repeating component itself, so I don't expect it would be useful enough to use in any other engineered bubble.

Light does travel at different speeds through different materials; maybe there's some kind of strained analogy to be found here.

Nice! It's not much faster than a signal sent through empty space, but it will outrun a glider.

I don't know if a recipe will ever be found to build one of these objects -- locomotives? trolleys? -- at the beginning of one of these "railroad tracks", but unlike most signals of this type, it doesn't seem entirely impractical.

At the other end it's pretty trivial to get a glider or two out, and then it should be "easy" (read: tedious and a bit expensive, but not tricky) to rebuild the short length of track that gets burned each time a signal reaches the end:

It's known that such a thing can't exist. Think about the first generation when your ship travels past a vertical line. Yeah, In fact, I also searched not only c2 but also c3, c4 and so on. But all results were same. So, Despite of I have never seen someone saying “This c2 with the grain can not be exist” at this forum site. Therefore, I recognize that there is only speed of c1 exist.
