Impressive -- nice work! It's good to get another spaceship synthesis or two in before the end of the year...

Here's a slightly less awkward cleanup of the leftover object in the southwest -- same number of gliders, but maybe a slightly faster repeat time:

Code: Select all

x = 36, y = 36, rule = B3/S23

That synthesis is nice!

I should have mentioned before that if a reaction is found to extend an arm, then I think the same
reaction should work with the base ship by itself, so that there would no need to create new branches
to allow a complete synthesis of larger c/3 ships.

nothing special, but faster sparks for the copperhead synthesis with also 14 gliders:

That does look a lot cleaner.

Repeat time is still 197 ticks, and I don't see any obvious way to improve it.

It doesn't help to reverse the two gliders that make the pi that hits the eater, and anyway that puts a later glider barely in harm's way -- there's a stray domino spark. Haven't looked at the two-salvo recipe yet but it's probably the same.

Maybe a faster fireship synthesis, though?

I built a copperhead 197 gun using the

Code: Select all

x = 44, y = 31, rule = B3/S23
3$8bo26bo$6bobo26bobo$7b2o26b2o$23b2o$22b2o$19b2o3bo$18bobo$20bo3$5b2o

27bo$28bo!
14 glider synthesis.

The gun is not optimized in terms of bounding box, but the nice thing is that every copperhead-pX gun (X>=197) is constructable using the principle. I am not sure if this is used in other guns, but when building it I got the feeling that it can be applied in many other situations as well.

The key element for inserting the gliders in the salvos is

Code: Select all

x = 23, y = 9, rule = B3/S23
2bo$obo12b2o$b2o12b3o$15b3o$14bob2o2b3o$14b3o2bo2bo$15bo6bo$22bo$19bob
o!
with the gun part:

Code: Select all

x = 1041, y = 335, rule = LifeHistory

6 gliders for LWSS on LWSS:

Code: Select all

x = 34, y = 31, rule = B3/S23

EDIT1:
and much nicer 5 gliders for MWSS on MWSS #1:

Code: Select all

x = 23, y = 22, rule = B3/S23

I think next to the glider, LWSS, MWSS and HWSS, the only known spaceship which requires less than 6 gliders for synthesis.

That MWSS on MWSS #1 synth is impressive, but I think the LWSS on LWSS synth could possibly be reduced further by synthesizing the HF+TL combo in this earlier 6-glider synthesis with 3 gliders:

Code: Select all

x = 15, y = 24, rule = B3/S23

I tried it but the HF+TL combo seems to be negative with 3 gliders

Has anyone sorted out a number of gliders for a complete synthesis? The Glider synthesis entry on the LifeWiki has an awkward question mark in the summary table.

Speaking of which, there were spaceships missing from that list, but I _think_ I've repaired all the holes. Did I forget anything besides the Orthogonoid, which has a fairly trivial synthesis but I haven't bothered to put it together yet?

The table seems to be missing the crab synthesis. Also, x66 half on HWSS takes a lot less than 25 (I think it's 9).

Edit: here's the synthesis for half-x66.

With five gliders, one can emplace the requisite block and tub:

You seem to have discovered a new, larger, somewhat dented kind of tub.

This is a good start, but it's going to be interesting building the remaining 15-bitter with a one-sided synthesis. Might be worth checking first to see which 15-bitter is easier to build with the other one, and nearby detritus, already in place.

I don't remember if there's a reasonable recipe to push the normal-sized tub and the other block into place after the 15-bitters are there. Probably worth doing if it's possible, to leave more space for the 15-bitter construction.

The gun is not optimized in terms of bounding box, but the nice thing is that every copperhead-pX gun (X>=197) is constructable using the principle. I am not sure if this is used in other guns, but when building it I got the feeling that it can be applied in many other situations as well.
I've been meaning to reply to this for the last week. Nice construction, first of all!

Your copperhead gun has some "steampunk" elements in it -- nicely optimized mechanisms, that are doing something that can now be done in a very different way by a more recent (smaller) discovery.

The rectangular Herschel guns in particular are (I'm assuming) from Jason Summers' collection. The smallest known guns are now kept in chris_c's collection. gmc_nxtman has been working on a copperhead gun using the smallest known p197 gun.

The fishhook eater's glider-turning ability is well known, but the MWSS+LWSS -> eater -> glider combination is something I haven't seen before in a gun-making context. It seems surprisingly good at inserting gliders in front of an existing salvo. The MWSS and LWSS are kind of expensive, though. gmc_nxtman's gun uses edge shooters instead, so that you only need one p197 gun per insertion, instead of seven.

However, sometimes you really do need to keep the guns way off to the side and add gliders to the front of a salvo, exactly like this. I think there will be a way to generate the eater more cheaply, but maybe the eater-turn trick is worth adding to the salvo-making toolkit.

See chris_c's script for the most universal way of doing this -- the script can build any possible unidirectional salvo of gliders. There's a clock-based insertion method also used in that script, which I believe is a little more general purpose than the eater... but clocks are unusually expensive, so it might be worth looking into this alternative to see if the script can be made a little more efficient.

I managed to get rid of the still life on the right. The three marked gliders were found via a script with the goal that they should make the red cells after 18 generations. The other two gliders were found manually. Patient tweaking of these may result in more reduction:

Well, that's already a huge improvement, and it gives us an official synthesis of 25P3H1V0.2, safely before the end of 2017:

36 gliders, unless I miscounted. I suspect even if that's the right number now, it won't be for very long.

Now if a synthesis for edge-repair spaceship 1 would just appear in the New Year's stocking -- or wherever such things appear -- then I could stop getting confused about which small hard-to-tell-apart c/3 spaceships are synthesizable and which aren't.

Nice job! I started making a different, more inefficient synthesis before you posted a complete one, but finished after:

EDIT: Now 36 gliders for a continuous one.
I manage the 5S project, which collects all known spaceship speeds in Isotropic Non-totalistic rules. I also wrote EPE, a tool for searching in the INT rulespace.

Things to work on:
- Find (7,1)c/8 and 9c/10 ships in non-B0 INT.
- EPE improvements.

It's getting hard to keep up. Here's that continuous synthesis tightened up a bit, with BlinkerSpawn's improvement. It could probably be squashed down some more in various ways, e.g., by replacing the southern loaf synthesis by a different three gliders.

Speaking of getting out of date quickly, where did that 6-glider synthesis of the second-stage (now the first stage) 14-bitter come from?

I got my initial synthesis of xs15_0j9eg8oz121 direct from Catagolue's shiny new "Obtainable from here" link, and I jumped there directly using biggiemac's second script.

I was so proud of my efficiency and up-to-date-itude for a moment there (sigh)... and now I'm back to my comfortable out-of-date feeling again.

So now chris_c's synthesis-generator data must be in need of an update -- or at least my packaged-up-to-16-bits edition of it, but it looks like the Github site hasn't seen any changes since May.

I realized the tub part wasn't needed, so I looked at the synthesis for the 15-bitter and figured I'd add another glider to remove the extra bit and make it a normal hook.
After trying a few locations of the extra glider I realized I could replace the 3G part with the 2G spark and get the hook.
tl;dr I didn't get it from anywhere.

Repeat time 225...
Nice! I tried a different trick to place the first block, and it looks like I did pretty much the same thing with the loaf on the south side.

The alternate block placement recipe didn't turn out to help the repeat time any -- still 225, so not really worth mentioning unless someone can use that recipe after optimizing elewhere:

Code: Select all

x = 80, y = 80, rule = B3/S23

I managed to get rid of the still life on the right. The three marked gliders were found via a script with the goal that they should make the red cells after 18 generations. The other two gliders were found manually. Patient tweaking of these may result in more reduction:

Code: Select all

Yeah, I had just used the SL on the right as a makeshift way to create a certain boat predecessor, so that was the more logical choice to eliminate. (I had found the left half of the synthesis pretty much immediately.)

Indeed -- if anyone can extend this (e.g. with small oscillator and Small Spaceship Syntheses), then please be my guest.
What do you do with ill crystallographers? Take them to the mono-clinic!

31 gliders, slimming down the final step. Same repeat time, of course:

Code: Select all

x = 191, y = 191, rule = B3/S23

I tried very very hard to procure a 1G "silver-bullet" cleanup but to no avail (couldn't automate the searching either because lord knows what gencols has against me). This is the quickest-recovering of the many 31-glider 2G-cleanup solutions I managed to find.
