The voting phase of this competition is now closed, right?

I never noticed the 14th of February time limit! I assumed it was going to be later on, just like the POTY 2016 competition. I don't know if it is too late for them to be counted (and don't mind too much either), but either way, here are my votes:

I assume calcyman will announce the results soon, but if he is for some reason unable to, I do have the results of this competition calculated in a spreadsheet.

I edited out my sample vote at the beginning in order to be able to run the following code (which should hopefully simplify the process of POTY vote-counting in future).

To extract results:

Code: Select all

curl 'http://conwaylife.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=3239&start=0' | tr '>' '\n' | grep -E -o '#[0-9]+ [*]+' >> poty2017.txt
curl 'http://conwaylife.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=3239&start=25' | tr '>' '\n' | grep -E -o '#[0-9]+ [*]+' >> poty2017.txt
To tally results:

Code: Select all

cat poty2017.txt | sed 's/#/var=/g' | sed 's/*/; echo "pattern_$var"/g' | bash | sort -n | uniq -c | sort -n | tac
The results:

Code: Select all

     49 pattern_18
     35 pattern_4
     34 pattern_9
     26 pattern_8
     25 pattern_14
     25 pattern_11
     24 pattern_10
     23 pattern_7
     23 pattern_3
     22 pattern_20
     20 pattern_24
     19 pattern_19
     17 pattern_5
     17 pattern_1
     16 pattern_22
     14 pattern_16
     13 pattern_6
     13 pattern_21
     12 pattern_23
     11 pattern_25
     11 pattern_13
     10 pattern_12
      9 pattern_2
      7 pattern_15
      6 pattern_17
The first three places go to the 2-engine cordership, Tanner's p46, and the stable pulse-dividers. All twenty-five patterns accumulated at least 6 stars each, so all entries should be congratulated.

I think your scoring is slightly incorrect, my own count by hand gives the winning patterns 18, 4 and 9 scores of 50, 34 and 32 respectively. But it doesn't matter very much since I agree with the ordering of the winners down to at least 10th place.

Congratulations to A_for_awesome and all the winners!

Maybe that's because someone quoted a voting post and it was picked up by curl.

I think you picked up 77topaz's quote of danny but also missed muzik's votes, which weren't prefaced with #.

Ahh, yes -- I knew that the quote could only be half of the explanation, since some of the results exceeded and some undershot your independent calculation.

I won't attempt a full recount, but here's an effort make the results a little clearer. There's the detail of tie votes, where the order has not actually been determined by the count. And reporting the ordering only by pattern number seems like a deliberate attempt to make people jump back and forth between pages a lot.

I hope I haven't added any new errors, but this was all manual copy and paste, and pattern-number vs. number-of-votes can be confusing.

So I wouldn't put it past me to have confused things even worse.

I've taken the liberty of editing the two troublesome posts, removing the #s to make the quoted one non-countable, and adding #s to muzik's votes.

Calcyman's original count:

Code: Select all

 1st -- 49 votes: (Pattern #18) 2-engine cordership (by Aidan Pierce)
 2nd -- 35 votes: (Pattern #4) Tanner's p46 (by Tanner Jacobi)
 3rd -- 34 votes: (Pattern #9) Stable pulse-dividers (by Tanner Jacobi)
4th -- 26 votes: (Pattern #8) New Demonoid and Orthogonoid spaceships (by Dave Greene and slmake)
5th -- 25 votes: (Pattern #14) The efficient 16-bit still life synthesis project
5th -- 25 votes: (Pattern #11) Synthesis of 25P3H1V0.2, and reductions of many other small spaceships (by Martin Grant, Chris Cain, 2718281828, gmc_nxtman, et al.)
6th -- 24 votes: (Pattern #10) Sparse Cordership (by David Bell)
7th -- 23 votes: (Pattern #7) Hydra (by Oscar Cunningham, Dave Greene and slmake)
7th -- 23 votes: (Pattern #3) Three-glider synthesis of a switch engine (by Luka Okanishi)
8th -- 22 votes: (Pattern #20) Synthesis of N-bit still lifes in 38 to 39 gliders (by Tanner Jacobi, Adam P. Goucher, and Chris Cain)
9th -- 20 votes: (Pattern #24) Life object having a bounded population with an unknown fate (by David Bell)
10th -- 19 votes: (Pattern #19) Completed Quest for Tetris challenge (by PhiNotPi, El'endia Starman, K Zhang, Muddyfish, Kritixi Lithos, Mego, Quartata, et al.)

15th -- 12 votes: (Pattern #23) Cumulative sum generator (by gameoflifeboy)
16th -- 11 votes: (Pattern #25) triple wickstretcher (by Dave Greene)
16th -- 11 votes: (Pattern #13) The first 3c/7 orthogonal puffer (by Luka Okanishi)
17th -- 10 votes: (Pattern #12) The first c/6 orthogonal puffers (by Nico Brown and Matthias Merzenich)
18th -- 9 votes: (Pattern #2) Fixed-length tail for a lightspeed bubble of arbitrary width in the 'stripes' agar (by wildmyron)
19th -- 7 votes: (Pattern #15) The smallest known (tied with previous record) period-7 oscillator (by "Bullet51")
20th -- 6 votes: (Pattern #17) Runny nose p3 oscillator (by 83bismuth38)
Subtracting the accidental double vote -- -2 for #3, -3 for #4, -3 for #9, -2 for #18, -2 for #19, -1 for #20, -2 for #24 -- and adding muzik's +1 for #3, #6, #7, #9, #11, #12, #13, #16, #25, +2 for #4 and #14, and +3 for #8 and #18 -- produces the totals that Macbi mentioned, and a new exciting three-way tie for eleventh place:

Code: Select all

 1st -- 50 votes: (Pattern #18) 2-engine cordership (by Aidan Pierce)
 2nd -- 34 votes: (Pattern #4) Tanner's p46 (by Tanner Jacobi)
 3rd -- 32 votes: (Pattern #9) Stable pulse-dividers (by Tanner Jacobi)

This agrees with the results from my spreadsheet. :)

Also, I find it amusing how the pattern that won the competition was found on December 31 of the year. :P
