Not sure if it's known, but thought it was worth sharing.
It's known and easily locatable in DRH-oscillators.rle or similar, and I remember making a synthesis for it at one point.

I'm not sure who originally found it, or who originally synthesized it (unfortunately, I didn't keep a lot of detailed notes about such things at the time), but the pattern file in my collection is dated 2000-04-14, so the synthesis is at least that old. It has three syntheses, from 24, 28, and 34 gliders respectively. Was yours smaller?

According to DRH-oscillators.rle in the Golly pattern collection, it was discovered by Dean Hickerson before April 1992.

The other reaction is indeed cheaper, bringing the cost down to 12 gliders:

Code: Select all

This is known and can be found in jslife in the 'osc' folder (downloadable from this page). You should check jslife if you want to know whether a pattern is already known. You should also check the osc-supplement collection available here.

It's always nice to see new high-period sparkers! Here's a stator variant that minimizes the bounding box and tries to strike a balance between clearance and population:

I wrote a search program (inspired by this) to enumerate patterns in a bounded grid, and found a p4 oscillator on a 5x5 grid:

Code: Select all

x = 5, y = 5, rule = B3/S23:P5,5
b3o$obobo$2ob2o$2o!
wildmyron then created a wick using it.

Code: Select all

x = 39, y = 13, rule = B3/S23

Is this oscillator known? If not, it is my first discovery in B3/S23.

That's a nice osc that I'm not seeing in the archives.
p4 fenceposts aren't required:

Code: Select all

I discovered 5x5 plane oscillators with different periods:

Code: Select all

#C p12 oscillator in a 5x5 plane found with dds
x = 5, y = 5, rule = B3/S23:P5,5
b3o$o3bo$o3bo$o2b2o!

Code: Select all

#C p8 oscillator in a 5x5 plane found with dds
x = 5, y = 5, rule = B3/S23:P5,5
b2o$bo2bo$bob2o$bob2o$bo!
I'm assuming that these are undiscovered, but I'm not sure. The p8 one probably is, and I'm sure the p12 can be used to make a similar wick.

The p12 is known. It was in jslife in this form:

Code: Select all

#C From jslife/wicks/w00012.lif
x = 7, y = 59, rule = B3/S23

jslife also contains these p8 oscillators:

Did you assume they were in a torus? They aren't. They're in a bounded grid, where cells outside are assumed to be state 0. You can make agars out of them, however:

Code: Select all

x = 23, y = 23, rule = B3/S23:T24,24

I haven't personally seen that oscillator before but I cannot imagine it being unknown because of its simplicity. I haven't checked in any lists yet.

Every such a bounded grid is isomorphic to a boundless grid with odd lines of symmetry in place of the grey lines, which is isomorphic to 2x2 reflected copies of the rectangle on a torus, which is isomorphic to an agar.

They all have corresponding agars, but they themselves are not agars, which I think is what he was thinking.

Yeah, they can be agars, but they are not required to be agars, like patterns on a torus.

Oh, my mistake, sorry. Thought they were in tori.
Probably because I wrote my own program that runs soups in small tori until stabilisation using a (probably inefficient) oscillation detection function.
I found 3*3 waves and stuff, though i lost the data by accident. rip.
