carybe found a Schick engine in 1x256.

Code: Select all

x = 256, y = 1, rule = B3/S23

New sparky p14 shuttle found by carybe (again):

Code: Select all

x = 11, y = 15, rule = B3/S23
b2o5b2o$b2o5b2o5$2b2o3b2o$b2o5b2o$o2bo3bo2bo$obo5bobo$3o5b3o3$b2o5b2o$b2o5b2o!
It has exactly the same symmetry as the tumbler, and even looks a bit like a larger version of it. Isn't there some pond hassler wick that this could support? The oscillator looks like a semi-useful sparker, although p14 isn't too common of a period sparker to need. (I knew I kept fruitlessly checking all those p14 census categories for years for a reason.)

Two soups so far:

Code: Select all

x = 16, y = 31, rule = B3/S23

Sadly, the fact that the ship forms at gen. 4 precludes the possibility of a synthesis arising from it.

That's really nice, congrats to carybe for finding it. I would be surprised if it didn't have some use as a sparker.

Very nice! By the way, can we please post new oscillator discoveries in the oscillator discussion thread? When it comes time to update the oscillator collection it would be nice to have (almost) everything in one place.

It can reflect gliders, but unfortunately this doesn't work on a p14 stream:

Code: Select all

x = 21, y = 25, rule = B3/S23
2bo$obo$b2o5$9bo$7bobo$8b2o$11bo$10bo2bo$7b2o5bo$6bo8bo3b2o$6bo8bo3b2o

It might also be useful in the hunt for a p42 gun.

Yes it can:

Scorbie had already solved this problem with a p14 bi-block hassler, but this new oscillator is much smaller.

Edit: it gives new record smallest p28 and p42 oscillators:

Code: Select all

x = 62, y = 18, rule = B3/S23

Judging by the lifeviewer, it works on a p14 stream. What do you mean?

The reflection reaction delays the glider by 2 ticks. If the second incoming glider follows the first by 16 or fewer steps, it will hit the reflected first glider, so 28 is the minimum usable period.

Thanks to carybe and Apple Bottom, the D8_1 census has just surpassed D8_4 in terms of number of objects. Crazy to think how just 2 months ago it had reached 5 trillion objects and now it's getting close to 10 trillion.

It's interesting how carybe didn't show up here or on the discord. Is he/she going to help the community from the shadows?

The catalysis also works on a solitary B, but I haven't tested to see whether the result can be perturbed in any useful way.

I think it belongs in both places -- it is, after all, a soup search result. /attribute reports Apple Bottom and carybe as the discoverers.
What do you do with ill crystallographers? Take them to the mono-clinic!

That's fine, although followup discussion will usually be more relevant to another thread. In this particular case most followup discussion probably belongs in the gun reduction thread.

Two things: first, welcome to the forums!
Second, I was going to mention how methuselahs are not usually considered important, but in this case you seem to have broken a record: This pattern lasts longer than Fred, previously the longest-lasting methuselah known with a 20-by-20 bounding box. Congratulations!

Very impressive! I'm intrigued to hear more about your FPGA search program.

It does prompt the question: if apgsearch tracked the lifespans of soups, what would the current record-breaker be? Over 10 trillion soups have been sampled in Catagolue, but long-lived soups aren't currently filtered.
What do you do with ill crystallographers? Take them to the mono-clinic!

My FPGA code is checked in to https://github.com/rliston/life-soup along with 288 20x20 soups with lifespan 25K+. It is currently running on a Xilinx EK-U1-VCU118-G evaluation board but with some effort the verilog code could be ported to run on AWS F1 instances e.g. https://aws.amazon.com/ec2/instance-types/f1/ although TBH I'm not sure it's any faster (~2550 soups/second) than software search.
Also, I miscounted and this pattern was found after searching 23B random patterns over 3 months.

Thanks,
Rob
