You should check jslife which covers almost every known oscillator up through the end of 2012 and the osc supplementary collection which covers everything up through the end of 2014. Most results after 2014 are in this thread, but there are some exceptions. In this case the oscillator is in jslife (osc/o0005.lif) in a slightly smaller form:

Code: Select all

x = 7, y = 14, rule = B3/S23

Edit: I will delete your duplicate question in the thread for your unsure discoveries.

Sadly, it appears at first glance that this engine is nowhere near as versatile as the twin bees shuttle, having not found a single uncatalyzed 180-degree dimer. However, catalyses could probably salvage a small P24 gun out of this.

I would like to think so. The advantage here over the standard twin bees is that we can use sparkers of periods 4, 6, 8, and 12. Here's a (probably useless) way to get a more traditional twin bees spark by adding two p12 sparkers:

Code: Select all

x = 22, y = 47, rule = B3/S23

Sadly, these p12s get in the way of much further catalysis.

Building off that, there is indeed a small gun with this engine. It doesn't beat the current record, but it's close (1550 vs. 1376 cells), and has room for improvement.

EDIT: Down to 1519; it turns out that a shorter p4 sparker works on the left.

Oh, neat! Does that mean I get to propose a name? If so, I'd like to submit "Dueling Banjos" for the monomer version.

I've been wanting this for years! How did you find it?
I'd been playing with the p24 LWSS gun trying to find a welded p6 sparker and thought p8 might be worth a shot. I kind of gave up on that after chris_c posted the even further reduced p16 pseudo glider gun - because it doesn't look like that reduction would help anymore. But along the way I'd noticed this spark and thought it would be worth trying to complete. An overnight search in JLS found the width 6 support and an extended width 5 search ultimately found the completion.

Thank you for compiling the known p8 sparkers.

Well, I suppose small size isn't everything, but comparison with kazyan's p24 gun was the motivation for my probably useless comment.

Thank you both for the comments.

Nice reduction! This new p8 sparker is worth mentioning in CurrentNews on the LifeWiki, but it seems like wildmyron's original form is completely obsolete already, relative to the new two-headed version.

Do either of you have an official name for this beast, or shall we just stick with "230P8"? (Unless someone can reduce the stator a bit more.)

Indeed. I looked closely at that flipper too, but because it's slightly different in the two halves I discounted it. Silly me.

No name suggestions from me. I did minimise the stator in the original form, but I haven't checked the smaller version.

I'm not convinced something like this won't work, although it probably wouldn't lead to a reduction of any sort:

This is the correct place to post results like this. The pattern is somewhat reminiscent of this p12 oscillator formed by a p6 sparker hassling a fumarole:

Code: Select all

x = 16, y = 28, rule = B3/S23
7b2o$7bobob2obo$9bobob2o$8b2o$9b2o$2o2bo3bo$o2bob2o$bobo$2bo4b3o$3b6o

ob3o$5bo6bo2$6bo4bo$8b2o2$7bo2bo$5bo2b2o2bo$5bo2b2o2bo$7b4o$5bobo2bobo
$5b2o4b2o!
This made me wonder if there was a p7 sparker that could perform the same phase shift, and indeed a recent result by Josh Ball did the trick:

Code: Select all

x = 28, y = 20, rule = B3/S23
o26bo$3o22b3o$3bo2b2o12b2o2bo$2bo2bobo12bobo2bo$2b4o16b4o$7bo5b2o5bo$
2b2obobo3b6o3bobob2o$2bo4b2ob8ob2o4bo$3bob2ob2o8b2ob2obo$2b2obo3bo8bo
3bob2o$5bo4b8o4bo$5b2o4b6o4b2o$13b2o2$12bo2bo$10bo2b2o2bo$10bo2b2o2bo$
12b4o$10bobo2bobo$10b2o4b2o!
However, your partial result only delays the fumarole by 1 generation instead of 2.

There's a possibility that there's a catalyst that can replace the beehives
Or even, a conduit to replace the beehives every 60 generations
But, the smallest converter I found can't take a p60 glider stream:

The problem is that the queen bees are p30 and put every 30 generations a hive but here something that works on p60 is required.

But it in principle it works if you destroy a hive every second generation:

Code: Select all

x = 127, y = 61, rule = B3/S23

I investigated a bit potential LOM hassler. Here are some candidates:

Code: Select all

x = 29, y = 51, rule = B3/S23
5$13bo$15b2o$15b2ob2o$14bo3b2o$15b2o3bo$15b2ob2o$18b2o$21bo7$13b2o2$

2o$8b2o4b3obo4b2o$8b2o4bob3o4b2o$17b2o$16b2o$17bo2$17b2o!
The first one is p34 (2xp17) would work with a suitable p17 sparker. The next one is pure p25, but a p5 spark does not work. The third one is p48, the required sparker must have a complex structure with two neighbouring domino sparks (p16 would work).

And I found one that I could complete, a p12 LOM hassler supported by two p6 domino-sparker:

Code: Select all

x = 64, y = 54, rule = B3/S23

It has a very weak spark:

Code: Select all

x = 19, y = 9, rule = B3/S23

I did not find any of these pattern in jslife.

Edit1:
The p12 LOM hassler is extendible using narrow p6 sparkers:

Code: Select all

x = 28, y = 11, rule = B3/S23

There are a few other ways to extend this. It's possible to support 2 copies with known p6 sparkers, but I wasn't able to get 3 or more to work:

Code: Select all

p6 - killer toads hassling phi-spark-(ish) spark, volatility 89.4% not in jslife or osc supplementary collection:

Code: Select all
