(plus or minus extraneous sparks) might work.

I suppose that might be a refinement to a popseq search approach: figure out how to delete dying sparks from each reaction being fingerprinted, and remove their populations from the population sequence. That could allow target reactions to be recognized even if they don't have the same extraneous sparks as the search pattern. That would be pretty complicated analysis, though, and even if it could be done it wouldn't help when what you're searching for _is_ a spark.

I'm not sure where to post this, but I would like to share my glider synthesis script. It uses two textfiles, one of which contains all the collisions from 2718281828's database, and the other contains the population sequence for the first 256 generations of each one.

Here's a sample use, for the honeyfarm predecessor in the first of gmc_nxtman's recent partial syntheses. Pasting the honeyfarm predecessor into an empty layer and then running the script produces this result:

Edit: dvgrn's post below reminded me of a few "limitations". Firstly, the textfiles only store the first 256 generations of population, so the script may miss some collisions that take more than 256 generations to reach the searched for pattern. Also, the population sequences are stored mod64 to reduce the file size, so it is possible (but unlikely) that this will result in false positives. Lastly, the script only checks the first 8 generations of a pattern to match with a glider synthesis. Fortunately, this can be changed if necessary by increasing or decreasing the GEN_CHECK parameter inside the script.

The textfiles are very large, so I can't attach them myself. I've asked dvgrn to do so.
EDIT by dvgrn: Here's the attachment. First I tried uploading a version of this with the text files in plain ZIP format, but the resulting file was over twice as large. The special powers granted to me by the PHPBB Powers That Be apparently don't extend to files over 30 megabytes, so my upload limit is apparently somewhere between 12MB and 30MB. Don't know where exactly, and am only slightly tempted to do a binary search to find out...

Looks good! I just tried it out by hunting down three-glider syntheses for three components of the new-record C1 diehard. It worked like a charm, once I figured out to increase GEN_CHECK from 8 to 80 to weed out lots of irrelevant pi explosions for the final search.

There are still a lot of false positives, though, especially if I try hunting for structures that are close to the end of their active life cycles. E.g., I'd like to be able to search for a specific pair of blocks using this same script, but when I do that I get all possible pairs of blocks, blocks and tubs, pairs of tubs, ponds, boat plus blinker, glider plus blinker, etc. I suppose that's what the constellation script is for. How long would it take to re-run the scan and get rid of that <20-bit limitation?

Something that should effectively combine the two scripts, that I don't quite have time for at the moment: I'd like to try rebuilding the data files to use an orientation-independent hash function that's a little better than the population. A four-byte hash of each generation's apgcode should get rid of almost all of the false positives, for example. Using Golly's hash function and picking the lowest value of the eight orientations might be just as good.

That would blow up the data files even bigger, but I think it would be worth it. One nice thing would be that it would only be necessary to search the database for a single hash value instead of a long string. If I'm reading the code right, a 3-glider collision that takes more than 256 ticks to settle might not be matched correctly, if the target population sequence runs past the end of the recorded sequence.

Originally when I was making the "synthesise_constellation" program, it kept on throwing out errors because some of the collision results couldn't be given apgcodes. I discovered by chance that there were no such errors when I set an upper population bound of 20. Later I read the apgcode code comments (like I should have earlier) and noticed it said it is guaranteed to work for objects of population <= 40. However, it would be better if that limitation could be avoided as well. I think it will take a few hours to re-run the scan, so not too long.

That is an interesting idea, I will look into it. However, I do get the impression that it would take long time for the scan to take place.

I re-ran the scan. It now works for all constellations that fit within a 40x40 bounding box (and are either period 1,2,3, or 6). Unlike before, it does not have the population limit of 20. So it now works for constellations like this, finding 40 collisions (example 3 glider collision shown):

Just so this ends up in a less forgettable place than the "unsure discoveries" thread, is it okay if I check in a copy of this somewhere like https://github.com/dvgrn/b3s23life/3glider ?

I think it should be possible to get rid of the 7-zip dependency for the synthesis search script, and check in the actual files that the script reads. Just have to import a zip-file-reading Python module or something like that. The bz2 module, maybe?

EDIT: Here's the new three-glider collisions subfolder in the b3s23life github repository. Unfortunately there isn't a one-click way to download just the one subfolder; it looks like you have to either use git, or download a ZIP file of the whole repository. Probably I should split off different projects into new separate repositories under a "Team" structure or some such -- but this will do for now.

If the code stops changing, it would be easy to check in a ZIP file so that the whole package could be downloaded in one step. For synthesise-patt, I suspect that only about 50,000 or 60,000 of the 3-glider collisions are actually worth including, so the ZIP could be a relatively reasonable size. You can see by sorting colseqs.txt that the great majority of sequences are partial duplicates of each other, due to huge clouds of ash and thousands of long-delayed third glider collision with various delays. Probably there's no need to have the default search package include all those, since no reasonable-sized patterns will ever match them.

Does anyone know what this is?
It's a 44 cell still life that closely resemble the Diamond Ring just below it in this video.
It does not appear in the wiki in the list of Still Lifes with 44 cells.

1) Still lives are generally not notable, unless you can make a new HBK with them, or if they have some other cool property.
2) There are many many many still lives with 44 cells; There is no way the wiki could contain all of them.

The majority of still-lifes are boring. That 44-bit still-life looks nice, but it is not really interesting unless it has some unusual properties. Here are some properties that might make a still life interesting:
  • Is an eater
  • Is a catalyst
  • Has a reaction where it reappears in a new location, such as the half bakery reaction
  • Is a solution to the Unique father problem
  • Is a bend for a 2c/3 signal
  • When a spark is added it is a methulesah lasting for 25000+ generations
However, having one of the first two properties wouldn't necessarily make the still-life interesting. For example, the following 4200-bit still-life can eat a glider:

There are at least hundreds of c/4 diagonal ships of a similar size (as can be extrapolated from the quantity of smaller c/4s in Golly's moving objects collection), so that particular ship doesn't really appear to be notable.

Notably or not:

What you‘ve found actually consists of two independent copies of the same short wide (or long narrow) diagonal ship that support the middle part of the crab. Actually, any diagonal c/4 that starts with a glider-like structure can support this part.

The base ship can most likely be found in the jslife moving objects collection. I did quite extensive searches on small diagonal c/4 ships in the early 2000s, followed by a more thorough search by Nicolay Beluchenko, if I remember correctly.

However, at least I didn‘t search systematically with this particular V-shaped structure.

If you find some similar V-shaped diagonal c/6 spaceship, then even topaz77 might find this notable. And it should go to the spaceship discussion thread.

Honestly, for me there‘s nothing wrong with rediscovering something that has already been found as long as you don‘t do that extensively. Giving credit where credit is due is a honest thing to do, but we shouldn‘t overdo that as well. As in math, most of the low hanging fruit are already harvested, but you don‘t know unless you try.

It does make sense to browse through jslife and the forums to find the gaps and holes in previous research, if you definitely want to find something new.

For me, more often than not I stumble over weird partial results that I try to complete, rather than progressing on what I wanted to do originally.

Even with the advance of fast computers and the availability of various search programs, setting up a search and waiting for results rarely works out. So it‘s all about trying out simpler test cases and gaining experience how to customize the actual search, dividing the problem in subproblems that can be solved one by one, ...

Just a few personal thoughts. Sorry for being slightly off-topic.
