Here's another idea. It's not necessarily an improvement as it stands -- but at least it works properly, unlike my previous two contributions, and maybe somebody can improve on it.

Maybe something like an L156 -- a conduit with an extra mid-conduit glider output -- could improve the geometry here?

Nice concept! This one might not be smaller, but it could be possibly more efficient than the LWSS stopper because one wouldn't need a G-to-LWSS converter for the read. For now, I'll just tighten the previous solution further:

Ooh, nice! The alternative Snark catalyst won't allow this circuitry to be slow-salvo constructed, unfortunately, whereas I imagine BlinkerSpawn's version might just about be constructible. (My well-spaced version is certainly constructible in every orientation.)
What do you do with ill crystallographers? Take them to the mono-clinic!

Seems to tighten things up a little bit, anyway. The closer the first glider output is to the H-to-2G, the less space is needed to delay the glider until one of the semi-Snark outputs can stop it. There are a few other Herschel conduits with mid-conduit outputs that might be worth looking at.

-- Still a long way from being a reasonable size, I'm afraid, especially once you grab a signal from OUT2 and route it back into TOGGLE, to allow for a non-destructive read of the boat-bit. There is actually a variant of the right-hand H-to-2G READ circuit that's completely Spartan, but that's pretty much irrelevant at this point.

Seems like there must be something cheaper that's already known. If there isn't, it will be necessary to invent it...!

Can someone reduce this synthesis for cis-boat and cap?

Code: Select all

x = 14, y = 18, rule = B3/S23

The autogenerated synthesis link on my page (Cis-boat and cap) was broken, but it said that this still life can be synthesized with only 6 gliders.
I was so socially awkward in the past and it will haunt me for the rest of my life.

For the LifeViewer Anniversary Holiday Challenge, I was thinking of making a waypoint script animation that would follow a signal through a figure-eight. It would start out as a glider, then meet other gliders that would turn it into a loafer (let's say), then back to a glider, then to an X66, then a glider again, then a dart, and so on.

It wouldn't be good to take up a lot of space with permanent multi-signal-synchronizing stuff like a G-to-loafer converter. That would shift the focus too much off of the single signal being followed.

But I think it might be reasonable to include smallish stable or oscillating spaceship-to-glider converters. Could make an arbitrary rule that 135-degree turns, even temporary ones, aren't allowed. So no loafer to 135-degree glider followed by a Snark, but maybe it's okay to allow a brief 90-degree turn and a little time as a Herschel:

x = 134, y = 96, rule = LifeHistory

(except preferably without cheating with a kickback.)

It might be best if the conversion gliders came from the outside of the turn, as in the above example. Or maybe it would be more entertaining if the converting ships were something more interesting than gliders. What are the biggest weirdest ship collisions that produce clean glider outputs?

The following glider outputs are in the wrong direction, at least for the input glider I chose above -- but this is definitely something I didn't know about loafers:

Code: Select all

x = 45, y = 37, rule = B3/S23

Lots of orthogonal spaceships to choose from. Anyone care to contribute some good 45-degree deflection reactions, to turn any of the following back into a single glider?

LWSS (3 gliders):
MWSS (3)
HWSS (3)
(sidecar? Big A? Coe ship?)
loafer (8)
x66 (13)
copperhead (14)
dart (25)
fireship (20)
25P3H1V0.1 (47)
25P3H1V0.2 (?) (only have partial synthesis so far)
puffership (60)
60P5H2V0 (61)
30P5H2V0 (65)
Pushalong 1 (77)
weekender (79)
30P4H2V0.4 (85)

If necessary, we could use gliders or whatever to build small constellations for the spaceship to collide with, too.

The following old reaction by Mark Niemiec can be used to grow any barberpole:

Code: Select all

x = 20, y = 16
10bobo$11boo$bo9bo5bo$bbo14bobo$3o14boo4$17bo$16boo$16bobo$8boo$7bobo
$$5bobo$5boo!
However, it has a very large repeat time, partly due to a large amount of smoke.

Can someone find a quicker reaction which can grow a barber pole at a speed of c/12?

I think it should be possible as the core reaction is just a glider and two simple sparks, as shown in generation 20 of the above pattern. The reaction needs to be repeatable every 12 generations (with a flip across the diagonal every other time).

If someone could find this, we could use Corderships to create a growing barberpole pattern.

Here's one, source unknown, that takes only 9 generations:

It looks like the reactions can be as close as 16.

Do you know where to look for this kind of thing? Your beehives are 60 cells apart, so they need p120 c/2 rakes. I went back and grabbed some ancient p120 fore- and backrakes from 1994, since they were the first ones that I happened to find.

But it's usually better to check the appropriate period in the "c/2 extended" collection in jslife. Sometimes you'll even get a direct puffer for the object you're looking for. Here's c2-0120.lif:

The memory cell was quadruple-posted to three forum threads and the LifeWiki. I'd suggest moving any future discussion of it to a more appropriately named thread.

The non-edgy direct eater-making conduit is just a wishful-thinking necropost from a couple of years ago. I guess "help" would consist of somehow making an edgy eater factory, but if anyone had a lead on how to do that, there would likely be a solution already available.

Just wanna know what's the current best glider synthesis of this 25-bit still life?

Code: Select all

x = 8, y = 9, rule = B3/S23

I mean, any less than 13?

I'm not sure what the current best used to be, but I'm pretty sure this new synthesis is now the best.

Even though as Goldtiger997 mentioned before this 13-glider synthesis of that still life is totally useless, I still requesting help for better cleanup(?)

The synthesis isn't really a synthesis, because the gliders could never get into those positions.

That's not quite a glider synthesis as it stands, because some of the gliders would have to pass through each other if they're coming from infinity.

Luckily you're using a three-glider synthesis of a pi at the top, where I think you can get away with just two gliders -- see Golly's Patterns/Syntheses/two-glider-collisions.rle. Just have to build the traffic light at the last minute after one of the pi-making gliders goes by.

Have you tried the Seeds of Destruction Game to help with the cleanup? This is a tough case, because you have to wait a long time before you start the cleanup in the northwest, to avoid damaging the key reaction. But if you try to clean up the junk after it's settled, it's too far apart to get very many two-for-one cleanups. The only improvement that turned up in a few minutes of exploration was the following way of taking out two blinkers at once:

Code: Select all

x = 34, y = 42, rule = LifeHistory
27.A$25.2A$26.2A$19.A$18.A$18.3A3$15.3A$17.A$16.A$12.A.A$12.

26.2A$25.2A$27.A9$.A$.2A$A.A!

Sure enough, using different syntheses for the pi and TL works with plenty of space, and there's a decent 2G cleanup of the remaining ash, giving a 10G that works from infinity:

Code: Select all

x = 100, y = 126, rule = B3/S23
