Since they're also to do with cell states: can the LifeHistory cell types also be made theme-dependent? I can't think of any default-theme-specific changes that I would make to such cells, though (aside from probably making the Golly theme recreate the rule file as accurately as possible), so I'd probably keep them default.

I should probably stop suggesting so many things.

I don't think it's worth it. LifeHistory cell types are only valid for 2-state Themes and the colours work well enough.

You've made some good suggestions but up to you. I've also much appreciated all your testing.

I'm not sure that's possible.

One of the bigger suggestions I've had on mind would be the addition of triangular-grid cellular automata. Currently the only program I know of that can simulate them natively is Java Triangular Cell, but Golly can also run them using multiple states and dividing each square into two right triangles. Of course, if LifeViewer were to handle triangular rules in this way, we'd run into problems with multistate rules, longevity and history states, and so on, so if we were to run triangular rules with these features, there'd either be the need to completely redefine how longevity is handled or how triangular rules are handled (could a neighbourhood larger than the square Moore work, with multistate triangular rule RLEs being converted into this upon loading?).

As for notation, since the Triangular Moore neighbourhood has 12 cells in its vicinity, and we only use base 10, we might need to use a slightly different notation from square and hex outer totalistic rules; using commas should work (B4,5,6,9,A,B/S4,AT). The use of commas in the notation also has the benefit of not having the potential to be confused with square-grid non-totalistic rulestrings.

The viewer would also have to support displaying the triangular grid so that these rules look symmetrical and not weird like how Golly has to do it.

Back into the realm of reasonable stuff, why does the Life32 theme use dark blue instead of black?

I'll put it on the backlog. It won't be any time soon.
muzik wrote:Back into the realm of reasonable stuff, why does the Life32 theme use dark blue instead of black?
Three reasons:
  1. Dark blue is one of the valid Life32 colours
  2. Without it the 2-state version of the Theme is identical to Inverse
  3. I like it!

The Zoom bar and Opacity bar now expand when the Viewer is wider up to a maximum width. This works for both inline Viewers (with the WIDTH command) or PopUp Viewers (with the POPUPWIDTH command).

The next build supports alternate rules which are specified using: rule = <rule1>|<rule2>

For example:
  • rule = Life|HighLife
  • rule = Soldier Bugs|Majorly
  • rule = 34/5/6|234/45/6
<rule1> will be used on even generations and <rule2> on odd generations.

This doesn't seem to be working properly (no S8 is being used, and this should always stay one-dimensional in even generations):

Code: Select all

x = 19, y = 1, rule = B134578/S02345678|B6i7/S268
3A6.A6.3A!
This, by the way, is Unidim1, so a first alias for the alternating rulespace. (Unidim2 is B12ci34578/S02345678|B7/S268 and Unidim3 B12ci34578/S02345678|B6i7/S268)

Can Moore rules be allowed to alternate with von Neumann rules, since both are bound by the same symmetries (and the fact that range-1 Moore isotropic non-totalistic rules can simulate outer-totalistic von Neumann rules anyway)?

I would also suggest the inclusion of hexagonal neighbourhoods, but the result wouldn't be isotropic (even though non-isotropic rules can be alternated).

When using the Draw tool after a pattern completely dies, sometimes p2 cells that die and then come back to life will be generated. I've also managed to generate alive cells that don't die or birth any new cells at all. These are all probably known, though, given the experimental nature of the draw tool. It also draws through menus and the like (making it impossible to scroll in Help with it activated).

The alternating rulespace doesn't seem to appear in Help > Info, is this known?

Amusingly, range-1 outer-totalistic rules don't seem to have the ability to alternate with range-1 outer-totalistic rules:

Code: Select all

x = 9, y = 5, rule = B3/S23|R1,C2,S2-3,B3,NM

All likely true. I wouldn't waste too much time on this for now it's still very experimental.

It does it's in the Pattern section under Rule and Alias.
muzik wrote:Amusingly, range-1 outer-totalistic rules don't seem to have the ability to alternate with range-1 outer-totalistic rules
Correct. They currently use two different runtime engines.

True. It doesn't seem to be listed under the Engine section though.

There seem to be some commas missing for certain LtL aliases, causing this pattern to be unrunnable:

Code: Select all

It does it's in the Pattern section under Rule and Alias.
True. It doesn't seem to be listed under the Engine section though.
It does now!

Looks like two aliases were broken, well spotted. Fixed now.

Since Catagolue doesn't natively support alternating rules outside of ruletables, here's a few more alternating aliases I've seen used:

B3/S135|B2/S5: Jelly
B3/S348|B2/S356: comb625
B24/S|B35/S: Phoenix
B13/S3|B/S345678: Fizzler
B13/S012345678|B/S15: alternlife

"Anneal" and "Flakes" are other names for "Vote 4/5" and "Life without Death", respectively, so these should also be added.

Also, it seems that something weirder is happening with that "broken aliases" pattern I posted earlier, since everything seems to explode with it. Neither rulestring seems wrong, running it with either rule on its own without alternating works fine, but with alternating, it goes boom for no reason.

Should be fixed now, thanks.

The upcoming build lets you define UI colours - test.

To do so use [[ COLOR <item> R G B|<name> ]] where <item> is one of:
  • UIFOREGROUND for foreground colour
  • UIBACKGROUND for background colour
  • UIHIGHLIGHT for colour when mouse is over control
  • UISELECT for colour when item is selected
  • UILOCKED for colour when item is locked
The UI default foreground colour is now white.

There's no way yet to set the alpha for each component. Also the colours are independent of Themes.

Can the "jump to section" buttons be reintroduced for some of the help sections, to jump to, for example, each different rulespace to look at their aliases?

Yes. If you have a keyboard you can also use Shift + PageUp and Shift + PageDown to go up and down through the sections.

Will it be possible to change the used rule from within the viewer?
