I used a search script that is not designed for oscillator searches. So with a suitable 'glide-symmetric'-oscillator search script we would like be able to find much more interesting oscillators, esp. sparkers.

As it is in general much easier to find a glide symmetric oscillator, I would expect that we could find interesting oscillators esp. for p10 and p12 maybe even p14 (ofind basically works till p7). It might be that a p14 G-gun could be found using such a modification so every 7 generations a glider is 'sparked'.

No, pulsar quadrant (below, middle) is a bit smaller and lower population. And depending on how pulsar-like you want, jam (below, left) stabilizes a singleton L shape in a similar way, but with a different cell configuration for one of the three phases:

Code: Select all

x = 34, y = 10, rule = B3/S23

Both of these are slightly different rotors from the one posted, but at least the "nose" ends match.

Hmm... jam is even a pseudo-T-nose, because it has a 2-cell protrusion in one phase, and the red cells to the SW and SE of the tip are always dead in all phases but the one before the nose appears.

That's because it doesn't meet the notability guidelines. It's included in the jslife collection, and I don't think it needs anything beyond that - unless some new and novel use for it is found.

There's a p14 in Golly's honey-farm-hasslers.rle, though that has the HFs diagonally aligned instead of orthogonally:

Which guns, specifically?

Optimizations along these lines have already been applied in a lot of places, but with a somewhat smaller p6 sparker, or at least a more weldable one. Here's pseudo p21, for example, with row-saving p6 bumpers at the top and bottom:

No doubt some optimizations have been missed somewhere, but I just looked through the p3N pseudo-guns below period 78. If there are any places where an improvement like this could be made, I must have missed it.

Re: Oscillator Discussion Thread

Post by Entity Valkyrie » February 23rd, 2019, 6:37 pm

This oscillator is somewhat smaller than the p6 thumb, with a population of 24 instead of 27. Its bounding box is though somewhat larger, but I use this whenever I have a place where I need to use a p6 bumper on the edge and nothing to weld to.

Just for fun:

Code: Select all

x = 89, y = 52, rule = B3/S23

Is this p4 oscillator (that looks like a mold missing its spark) stabilised by 2 molds known?

Drop the peanut, It's fine as "butter."
It can probably be found somewhere.

It's not in the golly pattern collection. (Though there is this mold supported oscillator):

Congratulations! I'm pretty sure I've never seen this one before.

Butter sounds great, although it would probably make sense to use that name for the interior, as it can not only be supported by two cis molds, but also two trans molds or one cis and one trans mold, and probably a number of other P4 diagonal sparkers.

I haven't figured out a way to make the interior part yet, but it looks like it shouldn't be too hard to make by mutilating a jam or loaf-siamese-barge while the molds are brought in from the outside. The two-trans-mold version will likely be the hardest to make, due to cramped quarters.

For butter, I would rather have it listed as "butter stabilized by 2 cis/trans molds", and refer the hassled object as "butter".

This reaction might help synthesise it:
