Mountain range patterns

Post by Dean Hickerson » March 7th, 2019, 6:59 pm

While experimenting with variations of my old "jagged lines" pattern from 2005 http://conwaylife.com/wiki/Jagged_lines, I found some patterns that grow mountain ranges. Most of these are what I call "witch's hat" patterns because of their general shape. They consist of 2 LWSS rakes moving east and west, which send LWSSs back toward the origin, and 2 glider rakes moving north, which send gliders southwest and southeast. The collision between the LWSSs is the symmetric one that sends 2 gliders northwest and northeast. Other collisions between the gliders and LWSSs and the debris from previous collisions can produce many different results, depending on the relative positions and phases of the rakes.

One of the first mountain patterns that I found is still my favorite:

To describe witch's hat patterns, I'll label some of the collision points:

C is where the eastward and westward LWSSs meet.

W is where the southwestward glider wave meets the eastward LWSS stream.

E is where the southeastward glider wave meets the westward LWSS stream.

NW is where the northwestward gliders from C meet the southwestward glider wave.

NE is where the northeastward gliders from C meet the southeastward glider wave.

The points W and E move at c/6 to the west and east. The point C can be anywhere between W and E, and can move back and forth. The points NW and NE can move up and down along the glider waves.

In the pattern above, there's a ternary reaction at E: When a southeastward glider hits a westward LWSS, it forms a loaf and a block, which is deleted by the next LWSS from either direction. A vanish reaction occurs at W. More than half of the eastward LWSSs get past W, while a much smaller fraction of the westward ones get past E. Because of that, the collision point C tends to move to the right; in fact it stays fairly close to E. (On rare occasions, C is so close to E that an eastward LWSS deletes a loaf and block; I don't know if that happens infinitely often.)

At NW, a kickback glider is formed, which travels northeast and eventually deletes a southeastward glider before it gets to the point NE.

At NE, each glider collision produces a blinker, which may be deleted by a later northwest or northeastward glider formed at C. The blinkers that don't get deleted form the mountains.

The mountains vary in shape: Some have fairly straight sides, more so on the west than on the east, but others are more rounded. Some have big gaps along the sides. There's a tendency for neighboring mountains to have similar size and shape, but there are exceptions. For example, about gen 1.4 billion, there's one of height about 2.6 million. But the next few are progressively smaller, and between gens 1.4502 billion and 1.4515 billion the mountains all have heights less than 2500. Then they start to grow again. Similar size reductions occur around generations 5.8 billion and 7.4 billion.

I don't know if the mountains can get arbitrarily large; the tallest one I've seen has height about 11.8 million, around gen 10.5 billion.

If we move one of the glider rakes so that the kickback reaction is replaced by a vanish reaction, we still get mountains of various shapes and sizes, but they're much smaller; the largest I've seen has height about 360000, around gen 2.1 billion. (But this runs slower in Golly, and I've only run it for 3 billion gens.) I don't know why the kickback has such an effect on the size.

In this case the collision at E produces a blinker instead of a loaf and block. The mountains are made of fishhooks instead of blinkers. The fishhooks can only be deleted by northeastward gliders; the northwestward gliders pass between them. In this case the tallest mountain that I've seen has height about 7.9 million, around gen 7.9 billion. I haven't seen any places where the size suddenly decreases as it did for the first big mountains pattern.

Here's another example of small mountains. In this case they're made of 2 different objects, ponds and ships. They tend to be smaller and more variable in shape than in the previous example. The tallest mountain that I've seen has height about 19600, around gen 183 million.

The "big mountains" patterns have a multiple feedback mechanism, in which a collision at C in generation N may affect collisions a "short" time later (depending on how far C is from E) because of the northeastward glider produced at C, and may also affect collisions around generation 10N because of the southwestward glider deleted at NW, and around generation 13N because of the kickback glider.

As mentioned above, we still get mountains if we eliminate the N to 13N effect; they're just smaller. But until recently, I assumed that the N to 10N effect was necessary to produce interesting mountains. Without it, there's no information coming from the west; all the important activity occurs in the relatively small region around C and E. In previous experiments, deleting the rake that produces southwestward gliders, that activity became periodic and uninteresting. But then I tried replacing the westward rake by one with period 80 instead of 40, and suddenly there were mountains forming again. They tend to have much straighter sides, and they get big much faster, but they're still unpredictable, with smaller mountains sometimes sandwiched between large ones.

Here's one such pattern; I've replaced the p80 LWSS rake by a p160 LWSS gun to reduce the growth rate. The tallest mountain up to gen 15 billion has height about 620 million.

Changing the period of the LWSS gun to 240 produces smaller mountains. They have fairly straight sides, with large gaps on the west sides, and heights that increase almost monotonically:

Code: Select all

#CXRLE Pos=-100,-45

# Two p40 rakes and a p240 LWSS gun produce mountains growing almost
# monotonically.

These patterns use period 40 rakes. For the kickback to occur, the period has to be at least 36, and I haven't found a pattern that works at that period. So p40 is the smallest that I know of for a "big mountains" pattern. For small mountains, the lowest period that I know of is p28:

Code: Select all

#CXRLE Pos=-99,-80
#N Small mountains (p28)
# Four p28 rakes produce a small mountain range.

Do broken lines follow any pattern at all? (mathematically)

Code: Select all

x = 5, y = 9, rule = B3-jqr/S01c2-in3

Here's one that looks like it works. Does it generate a sequence with its output gliders?

Code: Select all

x = 125, y = 159, rule = B3/S23

christoph r.: The first pattern in your post in this thread is broken, but the one in your 2016 post works fine. (P.S.: The problem is a couple of spaces in the middle of a line in the RLE. Curiously, the forum's pattern viewer can read it, but Golly can't.)

These are lovely! It looks like each successive large mountain is about 10 times as large as the previous one. That's a fairly common expansion factor for witch's hat patterns. Here's a boring example that definitely has e.f. 10:

With a few assumptions and a messy calculation, it should be possible to determine the slopes of the glider lines, the densities of LWSSs that get past W and E, and the speed at which the collision point C moves to the west. I doubt that there's any way to predict the exact sequence of output gliders.

Your first example, that breaks after a million gens, illustrates a frequent problem with witch's hat patterns: Sometimes they look pretty tame for a while, but eventually some reaction occurs which sends a glider toward the LWSSs, where it creates some debris. After that the eastward and westward LWSSs run into the debris instead of each other, releasing gliders that cause more bad reactions, and the whole thing turns into an ugly mess. Here's one that runs for about 135 million gens before a complicated reaction occurs at NW; the LWSSs get messed up around gen 203 million:

Code: Select all

#CXRLE Pos=-62,-43
# p16 puffers create a big mess around gen 203 million.

It can be done, but I don't know if any interesting patterns can be built that way. Here's one that I looked at a while back; unfortunately it blows up around gen 22000:

I had always a lot of fun with this construction. Eliminating all "normal" Spaceships that come into the "arena" between the rakes makes spaceship collision dancing between both ends. What i especially like is the self-similiarity. If you compare the last peak before each breakdown, the form of the mountain is similar. I use the 2-rake-method to eliminate the spaceships to get a better fine-tuning of the glider-collisions. Each rake can be adjusted individual to get some effect. I apologize for the broken thread, but i will leave it as a bad example. It is like riding on a razor blade. One glider added or taken away at the start position can lead to a mess. I don't know the mathematics, but i think the possibility of bad collision decrease with each round, but not become null. I named all my tries Wallstreet you know why :wink:

Some other examples:

In christoph r.'s wallstreet patterns, it appears that most (but not quite all) of the gliders from the northernmost glider rakes survive to reach the LWSS line. There they delete almost half of the LWSSs. So I wondered if we could get the same effect by eliminating those 2 rakes and replacing the p40 LWSS puffers by p80 puffers. After some experimentation I found the pattern below.

Code: Select all

#CXRLE Pos=-76,-62
# "wallstreet" variant using p80 LWSS puffers
x = 153, y = 98, rule = B3/S23

The mountains that this produces aren't identical to those in the original pattern, but they look very similar. I've run this for 3.4*10^14 generations and it hasn't blown up, but I can't guarantee that it won't: There are places, near the bases of the mountains, where an eastward LWSS reaches the point E where the westward LWSSs and southeastward gliders collide. This causes a loaf to form in the LWSS line. In all cases that I've seen, subsequent LWSSs burn through the loaf, sometimes leaving some debris above and below the LWSS line. (For example, this happens between gens 238949 and 262594.) It's not clear to me that that debris won't ever get hit by gliders from above, which might cause an explosion that would destroy the pattern. Or 2 LWSSs might collide headon close enough to the debris so that the gliders they produce will cause an explosion.

The same thing happens in the original wallstreet pattern, e.g. between gens 2605241 and 2625618. christoph r., are you sure that this won't cause the pattern to fail eventually?

@ Dean Hickerson,

it depends.
As i wrote before, some tries are like riding on a razor blade. The whole constructions are by some degree unstable. I the case of the bulldozered loafs rarely i felt uncomfortable, it seams a very robust constellation. More dangerous are the randomly raining gliders from not intended messy collisions. But you have to remember the huge space between the interacting gliders. Indeed it seems very populated, but if you lucky to survive the first rounds, the probability of bad collisions is falling. But of course it never gets zero.

In the following example there is a lot of mess, there are up to 6 changes of direction for 1 glider (indirect) and it runs up to 2.8 x 10^14 generations without problems.

Self-similar structures, this time both LWSS lanes are swinging with each other, not in the opposite direction.
