We have Herschel-based edge shooters that should have no trouble braiding together three p108 streams into p36 streams. Or maybe three p54 streams reflected into place by Snarks would work better?

EDIT: I definitely said that wrong. For the p30 glider pushers to work, it will be necessary to start with p90 streams and interleave five streams to get p18. At p90, I think two of the four insertions can be done with Herschel edge-shooter technology, so only two streams will have to be pushed into place.

Without the blinker, the same collision moves the loaf the same way, but does not output a new glider.

I can't think of anything to do with this, because the resulting pattern seems useless once the loaf is moved. It is just a little interesting that the presence of a blinker makes the difference between getting or not getting a glider.

Could be useful in a conduit if you replace the bait blocks. The Blocks are at the edge of the reaction and still are by the formation of the W.

Of course, you could get the extra glider to go into a conduit and magically create a “RESET” salvo, making a uselessly large spider eater. Are there any known spider eaters?

The old Silver reflector and Callahan G-to-H still come in handy sometimes! But the odds are probably pretty good that a determined search with something like Bellman, or possibly even catalyst/catgl/ptbsearch/CatForce, would turn up a direct elementary converter.

This is not significant, but it's an elegant and fairly fast synthesis of an HWSS from a glider/still life collision. Is it known?

It came up in an enumeration of similar collisions using patterns generated in lifesrc. For it to be "useful" you'd need a good synthesis for the still life, and obviously there are many ways to get an HWSS.

ADDED: there are 29 collisions that produce 4 gliders and no ash. Some of the constellations are Spartan-looking. E.g.

I used David Bell's lifesrc with these parameters:

./lifesrc -r9 -c9 -g1 -mt18 -uc1 -ur1 -o out.txt

That produced all 18-cell constellations fitting in a 9x9 box. Then I ran some custom python scripts to pack the picture representations into one-line strings and put them into canonical form based on symmetry (the lexically first string of all the orientations). I used that file (with 756525 patterns each on one line) to start doing collisions. I don't fully trust gencols at this point, so I wrote another python script for setting up only glider collisions.

Anyway, my attempt was to check exhaustively. I may have made a mistake.

And... again I find that there are only two still lifes of this size (biloaf and 3-block shifter) that restore themselves after a glider collision that emits at least one glider or spaceship.

Two of the above collisions provide slightly cheaper ways to edge-shoot a HWSS, which reduce the incremental cost of adding an HWSS to one existing flotilla from 12 gliders to 11 or 10. My original 12-glider block+tub construction also works for the two other difficult cases (one of which is the opposite side of the same flotilla); unfortunately, these two new collisions don't work in the other two cases. All other cases that involve edge-shooting an additional HWSS can be accomplished by one of the basic 4-glider methods, or a 9-glider one using a carrier. Unfortunately, the carrier one makes a spaceship that goes through two complete cycles with different backs before forming an true HWSS, making it unsuitable in many cases where the backs of two spaceships rub each other closely.

The 12 could be reduced to 11 if there exists a 3-glider way to make the tub+block constellation; the 10 could be reduced if there is a cheaper way to make the down boat on carrier, or if that plus the loaf or five other similar still-lifes that invoke the same mechanism could be made more cheaply. The 11 could be reduced to 9 if the barge could be made from 3 gliders.

Edge-shooting a LWSS or MWSS is usually easy (3-4 gliders), but there are a few cases where adding a MWSS to an existing collision is more complicated, requiring an 8-glider mechanism, so it's possible that some natural methods might be cheaper.

I manage the 5S project, which collects all known spaceship speeds in Isotropic Non-totalistic rules. I also wrote EPE, a tool for searching in the INT rulespace.

Things to work on:
- Find (7,1)c/8 and 9c/10 ships in non-B0 INT.
- EPE improvements.
