I once found a strange finite extending reaction

Code: Select all

x = 28, y = 77, rule = R2,C4,M1,S4..6,B4..5,NN
13$10.C2A$11.B2A4.2A$9.CA.B5.A.A$11.B2A4.2A$10.C2A8$10.C2A$11.B2A4.2A

11.B2A4.2A$9.CA.B5.A.A$11.B2A4.2A$10.C2A!
putting +'s turns it into an oscillator

p12 and p11 rectangle-pushers:

Curiously, when you click another LifeViewer link while the bugged one is open after you try to run one generation, it runs one generation in the new opened pattern.

I wasn't sure if the state of the Golly universe was still valid, but the pattern seems to keep on going on it's merry way once I moved it back to a usable part of the universe, so here it is at ~7.7 billion generations after the originally posted pattern.

Honestly, it would just be amusing if the pattern just stopped after traveling for billions of generations. Maybe there's a hack in oscar.lua that can be made so that the ship is repositioned at the origin after x generations?

The pattern reached 5.5 billion generations under oscar.lua when it reached Golly's editing boundaries and Golly refused to run it any further. I'm not sure what my next step should be.

I wasn't sure if the state of the Golly universe was still valid, but the pattern seems to keep on going on its merry way once I moved it back to a usable part of the universe, so here it is at ~7.7 billion generations after the originally posted pattern.

These types of ships with enormous amounts of exhaust are rather common in LTL generations rules. For instance, see:

Code: Select all

#C the similar (orthogonal) ship inside the post.

However, your ship has a forward engine while mine seems to have less of an engine, similar to the weird ships in zombielife. Admittedly, I haven’t seen many ships with that behavior with a fast and distinct engine.

The pattern reached 5.5 billion generations under oscar.lua when it reached Golly's editing boundaries and Golly refused to run it any further. I'm not sure what my next step should be.

I wasn't sure if the state of the Golly universe was still valid, but the pattern seems to keep on going on it's merry way once I moved it back to a usable part of the universe, so here it is at ~7.7 billion generations after the originally posted pattern.
Hmm... instead of torus.lua as I suggested earlier, how about just hack into oscar.lua and reset the origin every billion generations?

This is quite a reasonable suggestion and I have been thinking about doing something like that. My preference though has been to find some more efficient way of determining the eventual fate of the pattern and its period. Additionally, I expect it will take several weeks at minimum for oscar.py to run to completion so I'd also like to have some kind of checkpointing scheme - which has been well tested so it doesn't fail and cause loss of several weeks worth of computation. In the mean time I settled for placing the pattern at -1E9,-1E9 and running oscar again (unmodified). It will probably crash into the opposite corner of the universe again, oh well.
The 5S project (Smallest Spaceships Supporting Specific Speeds) is now maintained by AforAmpere. The latest collection is hosted on GitHub and contains well over 1,000,000 spaceships.

Semi-active here - recovering from a severe case of LWTDS.

Deal with it! It is a ultra big large huge period spacesnip!
It runs forever like jagged lines!

That literally defies the definition of spaceship, AND, since a finite area can only have finite information, it is not going to run forever. Either it’s an enormous period SS or it stabilizes at some generation.

My intuition tells me it will stabilize, not be a spaceship.

Luckily the period is (assuming it doesn't grow), at least within 10^1490. The ship seems to always be in a 99x99 square, and it's symmetric. Jokes aside, if this does become or is a ship, maybe we could use some command to reset the coordinate grid if it moves too far? The 0 button does that, but I don't know if that command is scriptable.
I manage the 5S project, which collects all known spaceship speeds in Isotropic Non-totalistic rules. I also wrote EPE, a tool for searching in the INT rulespace.

Things to work on:
- Find (7,1)c/8 and 9c/10 ships in non-B0 INT.
- EPE improvements.
