Oscillators in B45678/S123567

Post by Rhombic » October 20th, 2013, 7:09 am

This rule cannot grow out of its initial box, and the pattern usually degrades to a number of still lives in this pattern but sometimes, oscillators also appear. For instance, this pattern will degrade into five oscillators in about 550 generations:

Code: Select all

x = 59, y = 41, rule = B45678/S123567
14b13o$14bo11bo$14bobobo3bobobo$14bo2b2o3b2o2bo$14bob2o5b2obo$13obo11b

Great oscillator in a 5x4 box, period 5 gen.:

a P9

Code: Select all

and a p6!

Code: Select all

We now have p2, p4, p5, p6, p7, p8, 9 and p10.

Any pattern that starts with this shape of whatever length you want it to be is an oscillator:

Code: Select all

x = 146, y = 3, rule = B45678/S123567
b144o$146o$b144o!
Let's try to keep off that example (the one above this line) to create new oscillators.

Period 10 oscillator:

Code: Select all

x = 4, y = 4, rule = B45678/S123567
4o$4o$b2o$bo!
Period 56 oscillator:

Code: Select all

x = 5, y = 6, rule = B45678/S123567

an interesting p4:

Code: Select all

x = 10, y = 10, rule = B45678/S123567
2obo2bob2o$ob6obo$3ob2ob3o$b2o4b2o$2o6b2o$2o6b2o$b2o4b2o$3ob2ob3o$ob6o
bo$2obo2bob2o!
the center is P2, but the outer region is p4
By the way, your "super Hp oscillator" actually fails to become a PX, and becomes a P2...

P3 Oscillator. I call it the HIO oscillator. You'll see why hahaha.

Code: Select all

x = 3, y = 4, rule = B45678/S123567

P2 Rat Trap Oscillator:

Code: Select all

x = 6, y = 4, rule = B45678/S123567
2ob3o$ob4o$ob4o$2ob3o!
Now, the question is, why does this rule have SO many COMMON oscillators?

This is a very unstable rule compared to the other B4.
bon again, why should a 15-cell line fail at becoming an HP?
Is the rule omniperiodic?

I've been lurking for a while but these oscillators looked interesting. So here is my first contribution.

P21 (unless I'm mistaken!)

Code: Select all

x = 5, y = 6, rule = B45678/S123567

I would think the common oscillator periods in this rule would be readily found with one of the automated search programs used by people on this forum. Has someone tried that already or is the manual searching more fun?

Some of these have been posted earlier but I have been searching for the highest period possible of this symmetrical 3-wide style and have not found any with extendable period. They tend to turn into wicks. p594 is the highest period so far.

I'm also interested in these channel style patterns and have so far tried out a range of channel widths and casing styles, not so much in search of oscillators but trying to find a way to propagate a signal along such a channel. I don't know if that's even theoretically possible in this rule. So far most of what I've tried acts like a fuse, leaving behind a variety of different SLs or low period oscillators. Some have chaotic behaviour for a seemingly large number of generations whilst others decay rapidly to stable patterns. Other outcomes are: channel completely extinguished, or an empty channel with different structure. I don't think most of these are particularly interesting though because a lot of the results are dependent on channel length as well as the seed.

One amusing example though might be called the ohio generator (with slight modification at the end to clean up).

Code: Select all

x = 34, y = 4, rule = B45678/S123567
