You can also use the same constellation to 'hammer' an HWSS to an MWSS with an extra Herschel:
Code: Select all
x = 112, y = 55, rule = B3/S23

Possibly there's a way to remove the extra blinker with an appropriate FNG eater or 180-degree reflector.
You can use an SW-13 to delete the blinker. Here's a solution with RT 285 (including the time needed to reset the mechanism using G+LWSS):
Code:
Select all
x = 235, y = 189, rule = B3/S23

But I'm pretty sure one could use to massive side sparks to create rakes, and the loaves are rather cheap.
One could also slow the chain down easily by just adjusting the spacing.

Well, I experimented with it too. Just out of curiosity. I wasn't looking for anything new... I had already found my MDJ-seed.

I believe the below is a cheaper (169) glider synthesis of the 23-cell still life
xs23_09fg4cz259a5113 than the 173 gliders listed on catagolue - a saving of four gliders. What's the best way to get external verification? Thanks!
Welcome to the Forums!
You can usually trust catagolue to have the smallest known synthesis of an object (unless somebody found a better one really recently and catagolue hasn't updated yet).
To post your synthesis on catagolue, go to
https://catagolue.hatsya.com/syntheses, scroll to the bottom, and paste your synthesis RLE in the box below "Post new synthesis".
However, looking closely, your synthesis is invalid. Take a look at step 5:
Code: Select all
x = 9, y = 10, rule = B3/S23
3b2o$4bo2bo$4bobobo$ob2o2bobo$2obobobo$5bo$5b2o$4b3o$4bo$5bo!
It's not rewindable, meaning if you move the glider further away, it'll interact with the object before it can get into the correct position:
Code: Select all
x = 10, y = 13, rule = LifeHistory

The second-to-last step also can not be rewound.
Also, for a synthesis like this where you're making an improvement, just showing the improved steps over what's on catagolue makes it easier to see the change rather than having to guess among a few dozen steps (unless all the steps are new and are part of the improvement - that can happen).
catagolue synthesis updates currently happen every 8 hours shown at
https://gitlab.com/hatsya/open-source/c ... kind=BUILD.
I will note regarding syntheses that at least in the 23-bit still life case, syntheses for all of them are known, but some chunk weren't uploaded to catagolue because it would be too many (some technical limitation in catagolue and there are just so many still lifes at that population count). So generally catagolue should be the best reference if a synthesis is shown (and assuming there isn't some other CGOL community with secret syntheses we here don't know about).

not 100% new... I mean, I did note a periodic way to turn gliders using a p4 or p5 sparker with the g-to-C in a different way from semi cenarks... but I somehow never though about still using them as semi cenark, which does not turn the glider:
