I made a Python script which gives you a random still life to try to synthesise. It chooses randomly from a list of natural still lifes and finds one which has >4 occurrences and no known synthesis, then prints the apgcode and times how long it takes you to synthesise it.

The issue might be that the still life was synthesised between when you last downloaded the synthesis costs from Catagolue and when you ran the script.
Try redownloading the synthesis costs by running the program and entering Y instead of N, and let me know if the issue occurs again.
I tested it, and the program flags the still life as having a synthesis, so a logic error is probably not the cause.

Back to the main point,
1. The CA forum is not strictly for "academic" uses of CA,
2. You can't tell someone they should go away because they like the visual instead of the technical side of CA (relates to #1)
3. Sandbox is for everything, nothing doesnt belong in the sandbox, except hate speech and the like (See the Forum Rules *cough* rule 1 *cough*).

To me, the OP has done something different than you, they have taken different patterns that are of significance in CGoL and they have arranged them in such a way that it is visually appealing, sorta like how some people do the same with diatoms. Yeah, you could just take some cell fluid and use it to draw a picture, but arranging diatoms is different. You're not just free to make what you want, you have to work with the shapes those diatoms naturally have and try to make something nice out of them.

But this is "art", you can't rigorously define it with mathematical laws. Art is very much subjective. There's just something about it that ((((most)))) people enjoy, and there's a difference ((((to most people)))) between this:

Code: Select all

scribble
and this:

Code: Select all

still life
Now things have changed. People now insist that this is an academic forum.

The program is not just checking for if a pattern has been synthesised. It also checks that it has >4 C1/G1 occurrences (so that there are enough sample soups to provide a suitable reaction). As an example, the program checked xs35_69e0e9jz6511dd1eic but did not return it as suitable, since it has no synthesis, but only 3 C1 occurrences.

So the program checks a random pattern, and when it has >4 C1/G1 occurrences & hasn't been synthesised, print "You must synthesise...", or else print its apgcode and again?

Wel, I understand.

Edit: Can we just check unsynthesised still lifes? Here is a list.

I wonder how much users on this site have ADHD or Asperger.

Currently I know:
- tommyaweosme
- islptng
- H. H. P. M. P. Cole
- CARuler
- LaundryPizza03

also, I suspect that over 50% users have them.

Why there aren't any Indian users? This might because:
  1. Low education for most people
  2. Low development for most area
3. the nazi goverment (the real reason cause 1&2)

CA is already a niche in niche, don't expect everyone from every country to know this.

I suppose, but India's population makes up ~17.8% of the world, so there is probably some reason(s) why there are no Indian users.

Seems like the reason is completely independent of population distribution - for example, in my region I never met any Life or CA enthusiasts.

If we assume there are 100000 Life/CA enthusiasts in the world (since there will be people not on the forums who have come across it), and that they are distributed evenly, then the probability of any given person being a Life enthusiast is 0.00001240387. The average person maintains 150 social relationships, according to Dunbar's number, so the probability of one of those people being another Life enthusiast is about 0.185886%.

The actual probability will be much higher, since certain factors increase the chance of someone being a Life enthusiast:
  • Language - If someone speaks English as a primary or secondary language, they have a greater chance of being able to read the wiki and contribute to the forums.
  • Education + interests - An interest in mathematics, science, or computing means someone is more likely to find CA interesting.
  • Income/social class - A higher income or social class means that someone is more likely to own a desktop computer and be able to experiment with or discover Life.
  • Location - Wealthier countries are more likely to have improved education, as well as feature better internet infrastructure.
  • Neurodiversity - see the quote below:
    islptng wrote:

I wonder how much users on this site have ADHD or Asperger.
    (...)
also, I suspect that over 50% users have them.
Neurodiversity can cause someone to be interested in mathematical patterns and symmetry, both of which are common in CA.
All of these factors also influence social relationships - people often make friends with people who speak the same language, share common interests, attend the same educational institution, or are of a similar social class, making Life/CA enthusiasts more likely to know other enthusiasts. The chance is still tiny, though, due to how niche CA are. Almost all of the above factors helped to influence my interest in CA, and I do not know any other Life enthusiasts outside of these forums.

In India, some of these factors might be less prevalent. I also note that there is internet censorship in India, and it is possible, though unlikely, that this might be having an effect on the forums, somehow/

This is not an issue at all. Internet censorship is not a very big problem here. However, the other things you mentioned seem true to me.

Here are a few of my guesses for why Indian users are fewer in number,
  1. Language: Although English is spoken in India, especially in cities, only ~10% of India understands it, and even fewer are fluent in it. A wide variety of different languages are used here and most of these languages don't have much recreational math or science content, so most people have no way of gaining exposure to niche mathematical fields like CA. Even in Hindi, which is spoken by ~60% of Indians, I am not aware of much recreational math content. Most higher education here is in English, so even the college-educated people here don't create much recreational math content in native languages.
  2. Poverty: Most Indians are struggling to survive and have neither the time nor resources to explore something like CA. I don't think it's possible to explore CA unless you have access to a PC, which is a privilege 90% of Indians don't have.
  3. Most people join the community as teens or even younger. Most math-inclined Indians of this age are not encouraged to explore their interests in fields like CA and are instead forced to study things for school or start coaching for the college entrance examinations. This really drains people and destroys any interest they may have in recreational math.
  4. There might be more Indians here, but they don't reveal their nationality.

Shuich01, in the future if your post is the most recent post in the thread and less than a week has passed, please edit it to include any new discoveries rather than making a new post. Also, I moved this discussion to the sandbox, as it's off topic in the spaceship discussion thread.

The rule against double posting regardless of circumstances is actively causing harm.

I ran a few hauls of Pseudo_D8_4_Test on the new version but it appears they were actually C4_4, so that census is now contaminated.

D8_1 appears to be running fine, though.
I know about this bug. I edited the original script, but you were using the old, erroneous one, since I would have needed to double post to draw attention to the error.

Maybe lower the restriction to just consecutive posts within 3 minutes.

3 minutes seems quite low.

You might know me for the controversy I've sparked: after all, this might be still a big topic in the ConwayLife and ConwayLife-adjacent communities.

Whatever it is, I have come to say that if you really want to make this fuss about me, go ahead. I honestly don't care.

But I am sorry for my actions against the LGBT minorities. I should have kept my beliefs silent, and this way I wouldn't have opened that can of fish.

I should have just respected Moosey's pronoun choices from the very start, back when I was in her server. I don't say I endorse it, but at the very least if I respected it I would have not have had to clean all this up.

If this post makes me banned from the forums, go ahead and ban me. I have lost interest in cellular automata.
