Under those conditions, engineering a block restoration has the highest chance of success.
True, but couldn't we just split the output and rebuild the block? My 3-engine cordership Heisenburp for the one 3-engine cordership that couldn't be Heisenburped normally does this:

Code: Select all

2o!
I used MWSSes to reconstruct the block, and it worked out well: One MWSS can catalyze the other MWSS into a block. I used MWSSes simply because they were orthogonal, and so would work better with a diagonal spaceship. Gliders would awkwardly travel in the same direction as a Cordership, and the only perpendicular directions are either taken by the initial glider, or would require crossing the Cordership's lane. MWSSes were the best solution here, especially since we already have a simple G-to-MWSS.

Why does Golly not build when I have something to say :(
@Kazyan
Perhaps these could be used then:

Code: Select all

x = 13, y = 15, rule = B3/S23
$5bobobo$3b3ob2obo$2bo7bo$2bob2ob3o$3bobobo4$4b2obo2bo$4b2ob4o2$2b4ob
2o$2bo2bob2o!
Drop the latter whenever you don't feel like it.

Here are my ideas for which objects to look for converters for:
  • From the century:

    Code: Select all

    x = 4, y = 4, rule = B3/S23
    obo$2b2o$obo$2o!
  • From the ∏-heptomino:

    Code: Select all

    x = 5, y = 5, rule = B3/S23
    3bo$o2bo$o2b2o$b3o$2bo!
  • From the loafer:

    Code: Select all

    x = 4, y = 5, rule = B3/S23
    3bo$b3o$o$bo$2b2o!
  • From the E-heptomino:

    Code: Select all

    x = 8, y = 7, rule = B3/S23
    6bo$7bo$4bobo$2bo4bo$ob2o2bo$3bo2bo$4bo!
Which should I look into first?
I am tentatively considering myself back.

Whichever one you want.

Unrelated, but if I remember correctly, I saw something like a Herschel-to-queen bee converter in Gustavo's patterns thread (which if I remember correctly, works without needing to be stabilized), though I'm pretty sure it would be hard to find the post again, since Gustavo didn't mention a queen bee, making it impossible to just search "queen bee".

If you pick that century, just a little warning that it is something that is in 2 instances hidden within a well defined circuit. I did notice that it is related to the I-heptomino, and found the following links.

Still, this is not sufficient to split the tracks and add "I" or "century" in the reference (that I-to-E does not link to anything too), so the short message is that there is a century to R and to G already defined.

There's this:

Code: Select all

x = 39, y = 26, rule = LifeHistory

If you pick that century, just a little warning that it is something that is in 2 instances hidden within a well defined circuit. I did notice that it is related to the I-heptomino, and found the following links.
Thank you for informing me about that. I'll make a trivial century to I converter then look for converters accepting E−B.

Edit: This works except for the block being put back in the wrong place.

I am tentatively considering myself back.

I realized that an Eater 3 catalyst can survive the interaction, but...

$19.3D$18.2D$18.D!
A ship on its own can change the position of one of the blocks, with no need for the eater.

2A$.A.A$.A$2A19.D$19.3D$18.2D$18.D!
This gives us what I believe to be a new catalysis, since it wasn't in Gustavo's or EvinZL's cheat sheets.

x = 7, y = 8, rule = LifeHistory

Ah-hah! You are so brilliant! (I just place catalysts where they fir and hope it works out, which is nothing compared to what you do.)

I place catalysts where I think that they'll work (This limits me to placing fishhooks, Eater 2s, and Eater 3s.), and if I see a common methuselah or a pattern resembling one, then I'll try to isolate it.

That was a really lucky hit. What are the chances that it just happens to clean itself up like that?
Non-zero, which is why it's always worth trying.

Also, this can probably be made into an E−B→B by someone with better knowledge of catalysts than me.

I'm saying this because it seems to be extremely rare for things to work out like that.

Thanks! It's technically a one-block reaction. The block on the right is catalytic all by itself. The other block was added when searching for conduits.
Also, nice find!

that's great, that C-to-I looks very much new, it seems the default requirement for a conduit to be listed is met (repeat time of 300) so the following works with repeat time 169:

Can anything else be done with this catalytic block reaction? I wasn't able to come up with anything else no matter where I put my blocks and eater 1s (and eater 3s, snakes, and boats).
EDIT: I might just need to search deeper. I assumed that the affected junk would have to be catalyzed for anything new to pop up, because the differences don't propagate to the B-heptomino before a pi starts forming in a location unreachable by catalysts and that would destroy the block. Right now, I want you to guess how long it'll take, without, well I don't want to spoil the explanation. But the difference is real, and what I missed, MathAndCode saw. At generation 22, the change is very subtle, dictated purely by the absence or presence of a single blinker.

Code: Select all

x = 71, y = 13, rule = LifeHistory

Notice how the dangerous pi-heptomino has formed in the top section with the catalytic block. Notice how the change has not propagated to the top. At this point, I turn my attention completely to the top half, although I have removed the catalytic block to show the full extent of the change. 48 generations in, and the Herschel has formed. The change is still stuck in the bottom.

70 generations in, and the Herschel has emitted its first natural glider. Has the change propagated to the top yet? Not even close. In fact, the only difference is that the B-heptomino's block was suppressed by the change. However, like I said, the change did not propagate past that.

We are now 99 generations in, and the first natural glider has reached the change, and the Herschel has dropped its first natural block. However, the change does not reach the evolving Herschel, it merely swallows up the first natural glider.

While I was searching for conduits accepting C*, I found an oscillator partial.

Code: Select all

x = 11, y = 8, rule = B3/S23

Can it be completed to make what would be one of the smallest p5 oscillators known?
I am tentatively considering myself back.

Can anything else be done with this catalytic block reaction? I wasn't able to come up with anything else no matter where I put my blocks and eater 1s (and eater 3s, snakes, and boats).
I'm pretty sure I've found something with that reaction before, but I don't remember where I would have posted it. Sorry I can't be of any more use! (Other than to say it's a known and investigated reaction...)

I think that you're overstating what I did. In my opinion, my conduits are extremely messy due to what would be a half-hearted placement of catalysts for anyone who knew how at least six catalysts worked.
Personally, what I'm most excited about is the bottom of the loafer, and the reaction consumes a fishhook. I'm just hoping that someone more experienced knows of a better catalyst.

Edit: I isolated the reaction.

Code: Select all

x = 14, y = 14, rule = LifeHistory

It looks useless for making an entire loafer. However, the method looks like a modification of a century sequence or R sequence, so maybe it can be made by better converters.
I am tentatively considering myself back.

I know how at least six catalysts work (Block, boat, eater 1, eater 2, eater 3, snake, and that ship catalysis that I may or may not have found), and you still did better than me.
