and I submitted three-glider syntheses for the ship and tub that had two stages instead of one.

These probably are in the database; they just haven't been chosen as the default forms of the ship and tub syntheses because Shinjuku's "prefer equally expensive syntheses with more steps" feature seems to only partially work. (from what I can tell, it seems that both versions of the synthesis must be submitted at the same time for this to actually take effect? I could be wrong about that)

I suppose so. Unfortunately, the Catagolue submission box, while extremely useful, is still quite rudimentary, and molding syntheses into a form that Catagolue will actually accept does often take considerable experience, if it's not outright impossible without manual intervention. I won't deny that it also frustrates me sometimes.

If you need help submitting anything in particular, just let me know and I'll try to help out however I can.

Karel's P177 also works, but for the twin bees shuttle, it annoyingly bonks into it no matter which way you put it in. And yes, I went through the entirety of the jslife collection without finding something that fit well and didn't get destroyed.

I tried the typical replacement catalyst when a fishhook fails like that, but that didn't work because the active region decides that instead of leaving right away, it's going to spend two generations delivering a spark then leave.

This challenge does seem to reveal something about the person's approach (although I'm sure that that's not unique to this particular partial)—you tried periodic stabilizations, I tried replacement catalysts, and Kazyan tried Bellman—but will anyone get this to work?

Alright. Let's think about this more. I see two main ideas on how this might be completable. Since you and Kazyan couldn't find a stable catalyst that worked, this likely implies that a new one has to be found, but the unsuccessful Bellman search implies that a deeper search would have to be done. However, I think that Kazyan might have said that increasing the max-changed or something like that by 1 increases the search time by a factor of 8. A deeper Bellman search might work, and it might be worth trying, but it might not finish in a reasonable amount of time either. Coming in from the periodic oscillator side, however, has its own difficulties. Usually, for these kinds of situations, I let the block eat something else and be done with it, like this.

Sadly, any suitable spark, as far as I know. have to be complex. Now, an oscillator might be able to catalyze this by having a region of itself get hit by the reaction, where the region would break off and die off on its own anyways. However, due to the reaction lingering around for a while, I expect any such oscillator to have to be at least P5, if not any higher, and P5 is probably still an underestimate. My conclusion is that while a usable stabilization, stable or periodic, likely exists, it will be difficult to search for, but it will also likely definitely be worth it. Feel free to throw in your own ideas!

Alright. Let's think about this more. I see two main ideas on how this might be completable. Since you and Kazyan couldn't find a stable catalyst that worked, this likely implies that a new one has to be found, but the unsuccessful Bellman search implies that a deeper search would have to be done. However, I think that Kazyan might have said that increasing the max-changed or something like that by 1 increases the search time by a factor of 8. A deeper Bellman search might work, and it might be worth trying, but it might not finish in a reasonable amount of time either. Coming in from the periodic oscillator side, however, has its own difficulties.

I'm wondering how much computing power could be saved by restricting the search to a narrower time interval and smaller area. I doubt that it will make up for more than one additional max-changed cell, though. However, I've seen the general reaction, perturbing an R-sequence from behind so that it delivers an edgeshot century, at least once besides this, so something similar may be feasible.
