Smallest oscillators?

Post by Sokwe » July 10th, 2009, 12:22 pm

I have compiled a collection of what I think are the smallest (in terms of minimum number of live cells) known non-trivial oscillators for periods 1 (still lifes) to 56 (highest period before Herschel loops become necessary):

Code: Select all

x = 536, y = 315, rule = B3/S23

Update: added smaller period 28 oscillator

Does anybody know of any oscillators that are smaller than those in this collection?

The oscillator collection at http://entropymine.com/jason/life/ has a file called "X-oscs-1-of-each.lif", which has one of each period oscillator upto 60 (except the ones that aren't known). However, the file seems to be an older version of what you're doing.

This is advise the users of this forum that I am frustrated by patterns presented in GOLLY or RLE as I can not decipher them. I am therefore seriously considering abandoning this forum ,even to just view it. There are other LIFE websites which present patterns in a visual way I can use. I also get the unsettling impression that I am a topic killer, not just here but on other forums.

The reason for using RLE is that any visual way of presenting patterns is simply too large in most cases. People tend to present patterns visually when they are small (eg. single spaceships, etc) but the pattern presented in this thread is quite large. Click on the following link to view it:

www.conwaylife.com?p=smalloscillators

Edit: Also, I will hopefully within a month have a features where people can directly link an RLE file to the Java tool, so they can just create a URL like http://www.conwaylife.com?rle=bo$2bo$3o that will link to the pattern in the Java tool. Also, if people want to create a linkable downloadable file on the fly, you can do something like this:

http://www.conwaylife.com/pattern.asp?rle=bo$2bo$3o

That way, you just download the file and open it in Golly (or pretty much any other Life program), if that's easier for you (rather than copying and pasting it into Golly).

And no, there's no way to copy/paste into the applet on the homepage yet. I'll get back around to applet coding after I stop messing around with the soup search and some other things in the near future.

Because the pattern collection in Sokwe's post is so large (535 by 315) it would be difficult to display it in a visual form, if only because of line-length limitations on this forum. Sadly it seems that the only way to view large patterns such as this one is to load them into Golly or a similar program (Life32 being my other favorite). For small patterns, however, the rle can be viewed as an image via a url such as this:

http://www.conwaylife.com/image.aspx?rle=bob$2bo$3o

All you need to do is replace "bob$2bo$3o" with the rle of whichever pattern you are trying to view (copy the new rle all the way from the start of the gibberish to just before the "!"). Many people here do post such an image along with the rle, which is really useful for getting an immediate idea of what the pattern is.
It is totally possible to decode the rle by hand, see here for an explanation of how the encoding actually works. For small patterns I now find it easier to work them out from the rle in my head than to open up Golly to view them.

Don't worry about being a "topic killer", in my experience of forums there is no such thing. If people don't care about what someone has to say they'll happily ignore them and keep on talking amongst themselves. Any lull in conversation probably isn't your fault. For evidence look down the "last post" collumn of the forum, no-one really stands out as "killing" topics.
EDIT: Nathaniel has replied before me. btw is there any way to copy-paste a pattern directly into the applet on the homepage?

The P46 oscillator, is missing a large spark increasing the population by quite a bit. Instead, the minimal phase is 23 generations later, with the B-heptominoes pointing in the opposite direction. (The large spark is why this three block version has a smaller population than the two block version.)

There are other LIFE websites which present patterns in a visual way I can use.

And yet a while back you complained about images on my site for not being usable "for me", either. (I can't remember the posting or thread, and don't care enough to find it.) I'm trying to be able to present several different but related sets of information simultaneously (like starting, ending and affected cells) and agree that the result sometimes leaves something to be desired. On the other hand, I've seen no one else come up with anything much better. It appears it might be a non-trivial task, or at least one that will require some effort on the part of the poster. (Some of those postings with lots of images can take more than an hour to put together.) Much easier to just provide the raw bits, as is done here. Which is exactly why I usually provide the raw RLE, via a link, so people can transfer the object/image into their favorite Life application and view and manipulate it to their heart's content.

So, what exactly do you want?

In the version that I see, Sokwe included the three block version, and if you run it for 46 generations you get back exactly the same thing that you started with, as you should (the spark was suppressed by the double blocks on the right). Am I misunderstanding you?

The twin bees shuttle was, indeed, incorrect, but I changed it some time ago.

What I am especially curious about are small period 7 and period 11 sparkers that can be combined with other oscillators non-trivially.

Hi, MadMan.

You may be interested in the online RLE viewer Javascript program I just posted. It lets you view smaller RLE patterns online at the click of a button. Of course, it requires that Javascript is enabled in your browser.

I've also posted a few other conversion programs in that thread (partly inspired by your lamentations over the RLE format). This format was developed by Dave Buckingham for ease of e-mailing Life patterns. It wasn't developed for Golly, but it's become a de facto standard in recent years.

http://www.argentum.freeserve.co.uk/lex_r.htm#rle

For what it's worth, I don't think you're a topic killer, but maybe it's best to discuss Life in your posts, and not mention you personal problems. (If you want to talk about your depression, etc, feel free to PM me. I know the "black dog" rather well myself...)
