Interesting question! ... Probably?

It would take a bit of development work, but how about a symmetrical pair of fleets of backwards Corderrakes that send gliders toward the center, to bounce off each other and send gliders back to the Corderrakes in two loops, in a way that suppresses all output gliders?

If you're willing to forgive the presence of maybe a stray glider or ten, that get generated before the last suppressing gliders are used up, that would be at least mildly sawtoothy.

Well, there is this one. which might be close to what you want.

Code: Select all

#C A moving sawtooth using two diagonal period 96 Cordership backrakes
#C receding symmetrically from each other while shooting each other.
#C This is shown at the minimum repeating population of 974.

You can figure that out better than anyone else can, since you haven't defined "smallest". Smallest by bounding box, or by population?

Pop
Open up Golly, load up a 2-engine Cordership, run pop-plot.lua for at least 96 ticks, and look at the number on the bottom of the vertical axis at the left.

Or load up a 2-engine Cordership in LifeViewer and hit F6. Hit the G key to turn on population display, or Y to toggle a population graph.

Or, in this case, just look up 2-engine Cordership on LifeWiki and read the number of cells out of the infobox on the right. The minpop version is usually the T=0 phase of oscillators and spaceships on LifeWiki, as in this case. But even if it wasn't, a little bit of fiddling with the G and/or Y keys in LifeViewer, plus the spacebar and B keys, will quickly get you to the right phase to copy out.

I need a few 2c/4 flyby reactions (primarily one that moves a block forward one cell, one that moves a block backward one cell, and one that reads the block without moving it)
is there a collection of 2c/4 flybys?

Not really, in my opinion. It's very impressive, though. Where did it come from? (I haven't looked around in the relevant collections.)

The problem is just that an awful lot of impressive p48 oscillators have showed up in the last year or two, and it no longer seems sensible to have separate LifeWiki pages for each of them, with not a whole lot to say about each individual one.

-- Just my opinion; others may disagree.

The p48 was in Period-48 R-pentomino hasslers (top-centre).

Use the systematic name 45P48 and you can see how it is more impressive: per this edit, it is currently the smallest known "interesting" period-48 oscillator by population. "Interesting" is a somewhat arbitrary criterion, but it definitely rules out spark-coupled LCM oscillators; the true record xp48_660259gcy1g8gzy166y1sspxgk2gb3zy8ooy011 (unix on <s>Rarity's</s> Charity's p16) is marginally smaller by one (1) cell.
...
But, yeah, there is really not much to say about it, so I am not in favor of a dedicated page.

(EDIT: an unrelated question moved over LifeWiki)

why is the original backrake 2 used in total aperiodic? has anyone pointed out that the reduced version could be used instead? I tried to use them but this is all I could get

In 2023 (UTC). Trying to begin 2021's early caused it to be delayed for several months.

does this odd catalyst-like reaction have a name?

Not that I know of. It can be done much more cheaply and efficiently with two eaters; their main drawback is that they need more clearance on the sides:

Code: Select all

x = 11, y = 7, rule = B3/S23

I've got a Macntosh HD which I can't download anything from my App Store. How can I use C++ on my Mac computer?

Sure, The linear propagator would be an example. you could also just remove the cleanup from a previously existing adjustable spaceship. here's a lazy example with the demonoid.

The dictionary says methuselahs. Commons usage is methuselahs. But methuselae is a wiki redirect for those who, I suppose, prefer it.
