Out of all the (generally accepted) object names I've seen, none have been nearly as weird as $rats. Where did this name come from?

Sounds like a frustrated lifenthusiast didn't find the osc they were looking for, but I don't know.

$rats,p6 - Found by David Buckingham. "Rats!" was his favorite expletive. We also used "$" a lot. As far as I know, this is the only named Life pattern whose name contains a non-alphanumeric character.

However, this didn't explain the relation between the words and the oscillator.
