hi hi
so i'm pretty sure anyone who still bothers to post on the forums is well-aware of the concept of methuselahs: a pattern that takes a significantly large number of generations in order to stabilize and tends to become much larger than its initial configuration at some point during its evolution.
but what about a pattern that has a large amount of cells/bounding box that will stabilize in an unnaturally short amount of time? that's what this thread is dedicated to. i decided to call the concept
gas, because gas tends to disperse in a unnaturally quick manner, like so
Code: Select all
x = 7, y = 5, rule = B3/S23
b2o$3ob2o$b2ob3o$3ob2o$2o!
ok that was a bad example but you get the idea
so uh
ight ima head out

There are at least two simple solutions.
Code: Select all
x = 19, y = 19, rule = B3/S23
obobobobobobobobobo2$obobobobobobobobobo2$obobobobobobobobobo2$obobobobobobobobobo2$obobobobobobobobobo2$obobobobobobobobobo2$obobobobobobobobobo2$obobobobobobobobobo2$obobobobobobobobobo2$obobobobobobobobobo!
Code: Select all
x = 23, y = 19, rule = B3/S23
2ob2ob2ob2ob2ob2ob2ob2o2$2ob2ob2ob2ob2ob2ob2ob2o2$2ob2ob2ob2ob2ob2ob2ob2o2$2ob2ob2ob2ob2ob2ob2ob2o2$2ob2ob2ob2ob2ob2ob2ob2o2$2ob2ob2ob2ob2ob2ob2ob2o2$2ob2ob2ob2ob2ob2ob2ob2o2$2ob2ob2ob2ob2ob2ob2ob2o2$2ob2ob2ob2ob2ob2ob2ob2o2$2ob2ob2ob2ob2ob2ob2ob2o!
Edit: Here are two solutions with density approaching one as the area approaches infinity.
Code: Select all
x = 18, y = 18, rule = B3/S23
o16bo$2b2ob2ob2ob2ob2o$b16o$b16o$2b14o$b16o$b16o$2b14o$b16o$b16o$2b14o$b16o$b16o$2b14o$b16o$b16o$2b2ob2ob2ob2ob2o$o16bo!
Code: Select all
x = 15, y = 15, rule = B3/S23
ob2ob2ob2ob2obo$b13o$15o$15o$b13o$15o$15o$b13o$15o$15o$b13o$15o$15o$b13o$ob2ob2ob2ob2obo!
I am tentatively considering myself back.

I’ll probably suggest to move this to the sandbox?
And, @math and code, see cell and bounding box?

All four of the patterns that I posted here can be infinitely extended.

I mean that smaller bounding box is preferred(, and it doesn’t need to die at once)

I think that SquishyBoi asked for a large bounding box if possible.

…but what about
a pattern that has a large amount of cells/
bounding box that will stabilize in an unnaturally short amount of time? …
Also, while dying after a few more generations would still be unnaturally short, I think that dying after one generation would be the best example.
