OCA Discovery of the Year 2022 Nominations

Post by Cyclotrons » January 1st, 2023, 8:53 am

Rules from this 2018 thread apply. In essence: nominations should be interesting and nontrivial, and they should be from the 2022 calendar year.

Nominations will be open until February 1st, 2022.

Edit: It would be appreciated if you include a short blurb for each of your nominations as to why they are so interesting to you.
I wrote a stdin script that generates random soups of a provided number of a given spaceship. It works for all (non-B0) spaceships in the INT rulespace!
A Multistate INT notation + script.

Fast adjustable-slope spaceships (Kiho Park). This is a new type of adjustable-slope spaceship which can get arbitrarily close to the Life speed limit (x+y≤2p).

New replicator-based spaceships (FWKnightship, GUYTU6J, Naszvadi, toroidalet), 123456 and more. While this is not a new concept, there were some improvements in design and many unusual replicators (as well as some things that were not really replicators but had a similar structure). There was also an effort in Harvest Moon (B3-ckr5y/S2-i3-aek4ci5c) to make small ships of many different speeds.

Universal computer with universal construction capabilities in Flow6 (Redstoneboi). It is always impressive to me when someone manages to build an explicit universal computer and constructor.
There is also another self-shifting loop (cvojan and people on the Discord). I'm not sure if the ship should be grouped with this pattern or with the one in WWEJ3.

I would just like to point out that yujh's first pattern is a p149,262 (376*397 - 10) counter, which is far more impressive than what the post says.

Foreword: below is NOT a list nor entries, just collected the relevant links, might cover earlier entries from this topic.

TO-DO: collecting and grouping all relevant entries from here, feel free to check it:
viewtopic.php?f=11&t=803&start=2725

Things should avoid: last year missed to nominate the amazing life-like engineered ufo spaceship (2021):
viewtopic.php?f=11&t=1074&p=134893&hilit=ufo#p134892

I suggest involving the authors, discoverers in order to find a balance on reasonable grouping of some entries;
a nomination deadline change should be handy, too!

FWKnightship's splitter SMOS and adjustable speed ship rule
viewtopic.php?f=11&t=1971&start=3150#p152978
It is amazing how simple the splitter and the adjustable ship are, and the rule space seems to have more potential as well.

GUYTU6J's, jimmyChen2013's, Laundrypizza03's, and some other replicator rules with interesting dynamics.

While it doesn't disqualify them from the entry, the xq380s and two-out-of-three rake were already known. The rake appears in b38s23-oblique-puffers-and-rakes.rle at x=52,150 (just left of the center), the first p380 ship can be found at (730, 5,200), and the second at (300, 3220).

If nominations are still open, I would like to add one more: this 6803c/403840 diagonal spaceship by Dani (based on a rule by AforAmpere).
