The Isotropic Circus

Post by H. H. P. M. P. Cole » October 12th, 2023, 4:17 am

It's time... to make INT CA more accessible.

It's been high-time we explain the wonders of OCA. While Johnston and Greene's book is a great intro to CGOL, no book has been written which talks about OCA. And since the Isotropic Moore rulespace is the most explored, it's high time we make a Circus.

OBJECTIVE

The objective of the Isotropic Circus is to gather all the extremes of the isotropic range-1 Moore space. People are interested when they hear about extremes. Calculus is about extremes. Literally every field which involves gathering data involves extremes. Why don't we do the same for CA? With this, I believe that newbies will definitely be more interested in OCA when they hear about the amazing stuff hidden in OCA.

CURATORIAL SUGGESTIONS

- Spaceship that requires the least number of transitions (relativistic and non-relativistic)
- Spaceship that works in the most number of rules (relativistic and non-relativistic)
- Smallest 1D adjustable speed spaceship (relativistic and non-relativistic)
- Smallest 2D adjustable speed-period spaceship (relativistic and non-relativistic)
- Slowest non-adjustable spaceship
- Fastest non-c/1o spaceship
- Most number of 3-cell spaceships in a non-explosive rule

- Most number of 3-cell oscillators in a non-explosive rule - no infinite series and no objects in the rule with minpop less than 3 (no cheating, please!)
- Most number of 4-cell oscillators in a non-explosive rule - no infinite series and no objects in the rule with minpop less than 4 (no cheating, please!) (I took part in this - the most I found was 13)
- Highest period 1x1, 1x2, 2x2, 1x3, 2x3, 3x3, 2x4, 3x4, and 4x4 oscillators (crosspost from the Upper limit thread)
- Highest period 2-cell oscillator

And a few subjective/Lifeenthusiast-specific points:

- Most engineering-friendly CA
- CA with the most number of small objects (no cheating a la B/S012345678, please!)
- Funniest oscillators, spaceships, or reactions
- Weirdest oscillator, spaceship, reaction, or sequence
- Best/most impressive engineered pattern

If you have other curatorial suggestions, let me know! Also if anyone is good in writing please put up writeups for this. If you have suggestions for other rulespaces, also let me know, but remember! the main focus of this Circus is on INT rules.
