Glider gun with a higher density of gliders.

Post by Failuref » July 19th, 2011, 5:58 am

Hello. Sorry for bad English.

Gosper gun launches gliders, with an interval in 4-5 cells.
Are there any gun launching gliders with higher density?
For example 2 or 3 cells between gliders.

Glider guns have been built for all densities between p14 and p1000 (and any others can easily be constructed on demand, using Hersrch or other adjustable circuitry.)

See Jason Summers' gun collection, part 1 and part 2.

Thank you very much!

Can you give me more similar collections?

Hmm, p22 seems to be the smallest true period here.

First: the term for "glider density" is period, or P. That is, the Gosper glider gun has P30 because it fires a glider every 30 generations. And, by the way, the distance between the glider of the Gosper gun is 7.5 cells diagonally.
Second: if you want to fire gliders quickly, the quickest gun is a p14 gun (and it's quite big, by the way), and, if you need even more speed, you can use "rakes". Rakes are spaceships that fire other spaceships. For example, "Backrake 1" fires gliders backwards with P8, while it moves at c/2 speed (one cell every 2 generations). This is the code:

Code: Select all

#CXRLE Pos=-14,-8
x = 27, y = 18, rule = B3/S23
5b3o11b3o$4bo3bo9bo3bo$3b2o4bo7bo4b2o$2bobob2ob2o5b2ob2obobo$b2obo4bob
2ob2obo4bob2o$o4bo3bo2bobo2bo3bo4bo$12bobo$2o7b2obobob2o7b2o$12bobo$6b
3o9b3o$6bo3bo9bo$6bobo4b3o$12bo2bo4b2o$15bo$11bo3bo$11bo3bo$15bo$12bob
o!
And last: if what you want is a complex device (a logical gate or anything lke that), you wont be able to use quick period guns. This is because most glider stream control devices (glider rotators, duplicators and such) work at the most common periods: p30 and p46.
